grinding 3rd gear
hey guys for some reason every morning when i get out and crank my car and leave for work the 1st i go to shift into third it kinda grinds a lil bit. i push in the clutch the same distance as all the other gears and it still kinda grinds. i have to push it to the floor to get it to not grind. but after i have driven it a lil bit it doesnt do it anymore. anyone have any idea what the problem maybe?
um yeah... you gotta push the clutch in all the way... you're probably pushin it till its barely releasing.. if you push it in the way it completely disengages the clutch n it probably won't do that...
alright ill just push it to the floor when i shift now. never did it before. actually my friends car was doing this but a lot worse. u couldnt shift his into 3rd without it grinding a lil even kicking the pedal to the floor. his clutch went out a couple of months later. hope this aint happening to me.
This happens to me more frequently than I'd like, but the guys above are right. It's "normal", we just need to slow down on the shifting a bit and make sure the pedal is ALL the way in. The tC seems to be a lot more picky about this than any car I've had before, but there's nothing we can do about it, just gotta adapt.
yeah i've actually noticed driving dif. tCs that the clutch feel isn't the same.. but yeah you should always push the clutch in all the way. i've seen my dad actually in my car and his truck.. a 63 chevy C-10... that he'll press it little more then half way and grind pretty nastily.. yeah i get quite upset when he does it in my car. just push it in.. it's alright.. nothing will happen.. it's meant to go that far.
I learned to drive stick on a used 05' Civic (my first stick car)... Everytime I shifted into 4th it would grind pretty bad, even clutched in all the way. The owner before me said that he was trying to teach his GF how to drive stick, my guess is that she ripped it into 4th a few times without clutching in (or much at least) and screwed up the collar in the tranny, so it never engaged into the gear correctly afterwards... It's ok though, I did sooooo much worse to that poor car (downshifted into second by accident doing 80mph, partially engaged clutch - rpm licked 8,000)... lol... Maybe your Syncro's are going bad?... What year is your tC, and mileage?...
07 tc with 29,000 miles. they better not being going bad or ima trade this mug in for something else lol. im not doing anything that the car shouldnt be able to handle. im n/a with a couple of bolt ons but not enough hp to come even close to messing anything up. idk it seems ever since i changed my tranny fluid that it does it a lot easier and also when i get on and race it seemed like it got harder to catch the gears missing them a lot more. idk. maybe it me driving in sandles lol. idk about yall but the shoes im wearing plays a big part in how i drive lol. i just need to make sure it goes to the floor from now on. gonna change my tranny fluid again to something else. either royal purple or redline mt-90. heard both are great. so we shall see.

A gear that is grinding when the clutch isn't pushed in all the way is not because the syncros are bad (well they probably weren't bad but now could be), but because you're not fulling disengaging the clutch before switching gears. As the clutch wears, it's harder to fully engage and disengage, causing you to grind a bit more when shifting.
yea i hate clutches well at least factory ones lol. yea its just being lazy a lil and not pushing the clutch in all the way sometimes when im half asleep on the way to work grinds here and there but thats throughout all the gears, not saying i do it a lot at all. everyone stalls or grinds their gears every once in a while, no one is perfect lol. just my main concern why i can push in the clutch the same distance with all the gears and it grinds third a lil when the car is cold and first time cranked up that day. or idk maybe its just me half asleep trying to drive idk lol. but thanks guys ill work on the shifting. need to drink me a coffee or something before i leave lol.
ok well then i will just leave it as going bad not gone bad lol. and ill push it to the floor. weird thing tho is when i mentioned my buds car was doing the same thing but just a lot worse his clutch went out. well he changed it and put in an aftermarket one which we did ourselves which was not fun at all. (get all tools u will and will not need before in barking on something like that) i hate him for those 48 hrs we spent doing it lol but anyways he put the new clutch in and his stopped doing it.
Lately I've noticed the same problem on my '07 tC with 40K miles, and I've fully disengaged the clutch on shifts since day 1. I'm not saying I baby it though, it does see some time at the 1/4 mile, and the occasional quick shifts on the street, but the clutch pedal ALWAYS hits the floor.
75W-90 is a multi-viscosity oil, just like you use in your engine. The lube for our transmissions is dsigned to have the same viscosity no matter what the temperature is, and the MT in MT-90 stands for Manual Transmission. I screwed up, and put 75W-90 in my transmission, and didn't even think about it until I read this thread beginning to end. And I'm certain that's what is causing my 3rd gear synchronizer to act up, because it has the wrong lube rubbing up on it.
yea u could be right. then maybe i need to get some redline mt-90. guess i will pick up some when i get paid next week and i do my oil change, gear oil change, and engine coolant change. gonna be one fun day.
