Default low gearing and high revving

has anyone else noticed that the xb has low gearing? i mean, at 60mph, in 5th, i am revving at 3k. wow, dont you think its kinda high, even for a 4 cyl? its a happy revver.
AND, this car has a 2.4l, and where HELL is the torque?

For a 4 cylinder, this baby has impressed me with its bottom end torque. However, you are correct about its low gearing, in auto anyways. Manual seems to be a little better.

im impressed with the numbers. however, my nissan sentra with a 2.0l sr20de engine felt more torque.

The torque is decent for a 3000+ lb tank like the xb2 (could use a bit more horse power). Scion should have put the camry 5th gear or a 6th gear. It revs way too high while driving on the highway.

I agree the 5 speed auto would have been nice... But this car is a economy car, so mpg are what they were after...

agree my 5sp revs just over 3K with cruise set at 70mph. do a lot of freeway driving and would love a 6th gear. engine torque would handle it, i use 5th gear above 2K when possible. average mpg has been over 30 with my mods

It does rev a tad too high on the highways for sure IMHO. However, fuel economy in this vehicle is there. I get 29-30mpg out of the shop's truck.

Simple!

Rev 1st to know more than 3K, 2nd to 3K.....Keep the shifts short and revs too.

Run 4th in 35-40mph and 5th for everything above that!

We've clocked as high as 31mpg on complete highway to and from Mid Ohio Race Way, which is 4 hours away.

i've tried that but it just doesn't seem to work and i actually shift a couple hundred below 3k somewhere in between 2.5k-2.8k keeping in the 2.5k mark as much as i can and i still get 24mpg. would it have something to do with driving more local/surface streets instead of highway/freeways.

Wow, surprised to hear about the gearing in the 5-speed. I have the 4-speed auto, and my RPM's run about:
2150 at 60mph
2650 at 70mph
3150 at 80mph
I also did a round trip recently from S.F. to L.A. (including going over the Grapevine both directions) and averaged 28mpg going 75mph most of the time.

is all auto have the same rpm range? reason why i've ask is someone posted their car is running 3k while going at 60 mpg at the top of the page. are there any why your doing much better

I double-checked on my drive home tonight, and I'm actually just over 2200rpm's at 60mph. As to the OP running 3k rpm's at 60mph; he said that he does this in 5th, so he has to have a manual, not an auto.

That might do it right there. I do about 85% thruway and 15% streets
