View Full Version : Painted Dash
Hi Y'all
Has anyone sanded down and painted their dash? I'm looking at sanding down and painting all of the rice paper looking pieces?
Also, where can I find BSP paint for such a large scale measure?
yeldak 10-06-2008, 04:16 AM Seriously?????
I'll leave it alone, there is a DIY done by FLEA I believe... and for the paint, try paintscratch.com they sell aerosol cans

Y do you say it like that? I have talented people to help me!
^Just to clear it up, STNC is referring to the actual dash, not the gauge and bezel pieces. If you got talented people to help you, then I say paint it. If not then suede it in black.
Does anyone know where to find non-fading suede? Or does that not exist?
Best bet is to ask anyone in your area that does seat upholstery...they're the experts in that area, they deal with suede and other fabrics day in and day out.
BZinn1 10-06-2008, 05:28 AM paintscratch .com sells it in aerosol and in premixed pint cans.
one big problem you will face with apainted dash is glare on the windshield......even with BSP it will glare....
my Yaris has the waterfall and center top of the dash painted BSP and it glares like crazy.
AlanW 10-06-2008, 05:33 AM There's automotive grade suede and non automotive grade suede. Make sure you get the automotive one because they're made so that they don't fade as fast as normal.
where do i find automotive grade suede?
captainlaziness 10-06-2008, 05:39 AM There happens to be a great write-up here (http://www.scionlife.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=6891). It's done with an xB, but the process would be the same. You can get paint at any body shop or from online retailers.
Oh James! How you save me!
Yeah, I've decided to do it! So look forward to seeing more...not soon though...
Elijahtc 10-06-2008, 06:02 AM personally just seems like it will be too much but that's just my opinion.
captainlaziness 10-06-2008, 07:41 PM Getting rid of all the rice paper texture is a heroic undertaking. Good luck.
I will be my cars hero, have no fear
Wanna help?
Elijahtc 10-06-2008, 09:21 PM that's gonna be a really hard job. trying to make sure everything is smooth is gonna be crazy. ha ha prolly gonna take a good bit of time and sand paper. ha ha

It was definitely a pain to take everything apart, but it was worth it for sure. It makes the interior look alot better then the all black. I wrapped the door panels in the white carbon fiber looking vinyl and had the dash pieces powder coated with the special spray for plastics

vinyl from trimstore.com
BZinn1 10-23-2008, 02:13 AM You kno wyou could wrap it with a nice textured leather like antelope.......it can be found in black and looks really good.
One of the guys up here has it in his first gen.........entire interior.....racing seats and all and it is really nice.........looks very high end......less work than sanding and priming and painting too.
Need4Bass05 10-23-2008, 03:27 AM That vinyl looks familiar...
06tcdude 10-23-2008, 05:52 PM trimstore.com, cool thanks

1vicissitude 10-25-2008, 04:22 AM I just got done putting my dash back in on my 08 xb after completly sanding and painting it. The smell is driving me nuts though. Paint fumes while driving suck lol. If you want to do it just be prepared to not drive your car for a few days, and to sand your heart out. A palm sander is great untill you need to sand a corner or curve. It did come out great. Now I just need to get a orbital buffer because after all that sanding I refuse to buff it to a mirror finish by hand. I seem to have lost my dumb camera though which sucks, dumb me being too drunk in vegas.
1vicissitude 10-25-2008, 04:55 AM You have a pm flea!
captainlaziness 10-27-2008, 04:30 AM Take a camera with you FLEA.
