View Full Version : The always dirty back window
iceboxer 12-21-2004, 12:23 PM We've only had our Xb for 2 weeks, and our only complaint is that the back window seems to always be covered with dirt. It is winter and the roads here have a lot of sand thrown on them, but this seems to be an annoying problem.
Any tips or ideas for dealing with / avoiding the dirt?
(Besides moving to warmer climate!)
dollar5 12-21-2004, 12:53 PM its hard for me to suggest anything, i usually sponge bath my xb every night before we hit the sack. hehe jk, if the dirt is mainly from driving then theres not much you can do besides cleaning products that claim to keep the dirt away, but if it when your parked i would suggest a car cover which sucks putting on in bad conditions, if you dont have a garage you can look into the tent like car ports alot cheaper then installing a garage.
TOAST3R 12-21-2004, 01:03 PM i have that problem too, my bumper and whole back of my xB is dirty right away while the rest of car is clean.
ltj42884 12-21-2004, 01:59 PM thats how square vehicles are...ever look at the back of a box truck or tractor trailor?...the sqareness causes the air to draft right onto the back of the car...a spoiler might help but i dont have one so i cant tell you for sure if it will or not
DJ_X_Trodinaire 12-21-2004, 02:00 PM its how the car is designed unfortunately...
any van /car/truck that has a flat rear hatch is bound to get dirty quicker dont make me go into air turbulance tutorial lol
Old_Punk 12-21-2004, 02:09 PM Giant tear-aways like on helmets and NASCAR windshields.

Yeah, My Tracker does that too. Its the flat back.
dont make me go into air turbulance tutorial lol
oooo please do
cartier001 12-21-2004, 03:57 PM I have the same problem. should the stock spoiler help? It creates air current to push away the air turbulance which get the rear of box dirty.
Does anyone with stock spoiler on the box who still has the same problem there?

I have a stock spoiler and it still gets dirty as hell. It dosen't help trust me.
ruunin_earl 12-21-2004, 04:02 PM I have a stock spoiler and I don't seem to have that problem. I also use Rain-X on my windows and on my box as well. It's two different kinds of Rain-x, but it works like a champ!
bamabox 12-21-2004, 04:20 PM I run the stock spoiler as well and my rear window does seem to get a little dirtier then the others, but not really bad at all
i've got the stock spoiler and my rear window stays clean for a longer period of time. i drove a highlander without a spoiler home last night and the rear window was dirty half way home, my xB stays cleaner than that.
cartier001 12-21-2004, 04:34 PM Munch,
Mine is getting dirty as soon as the road is wet with driving speed over 45 mph. Dirt cover the rear window within 10 sec after I wipe it. So I have to keep using the rear wipe as I drive. This is how serious the problem is like. How is your like?

Same thing here, and there is nothing I can do but put the rear wiper on and spray the cleaner  . I'm glad it's parked up for the winter :D .
It's the nature of the beast, my wife has a matrix and the back window is always dirty in the winter, my xB so far is exactly the same. Thats why they put a wiper on the back window of our cars....
hotbox05 12-21-2004, 05:27 PM yeah most hatches or box type vehicles will get pretty dirty back there.

I use "Rain-X" and it keeps the rear window cleaner for a much longer time.
It also makes the salt and snow slide off (handy in NY)
and makes the dirt wipe off a lot easier when you clean it.

(And wash the damn thing once in a while ;))
squirrel 12-21-2004, 07:27 PM It gets worse when your xB is lowered and has a Fabulous wing on the back.
UnFocused 12-21-2004, 07:32 PM TWO WORDS; California car duster!!!- available at wal-wart for $20. Wipes the dust off in 3 secs!
i have a spoiler as well, and mine gets more dusty in the back then the rest of the car, but the duster takes the dust off real quick...

that really makes a difference??
does the fab wing create a air vertex behind the car?
lowering the car also??
this, i'm curious about.

I get more dirt due to the increased lowered pressure back there. Does that sound right? Sometimes when I drive down he street at 25 mph, you can see the leaves flying up as high as the top of the window, in the rear view mirror.
I use a car wash a mile from my house. We have nasty treated delta water here and it leaves nasty white spots. So I use the cars wash that filters the water for the rinse.
Once I get home, my back window is already coated w/ road dirt. Rain-X does help.
Big_Jim 12-21-2004, 08:06 PM all i gotta say is wow. but the wing and the drop are so important lol.
i'd rather break out the garden hose once a week then loose the spoiler.
doctorcue 12-21-2004, 08:33 PM I think the only answer is to take the cone of a goodyear blimp and attach it to the hatch. Make it extra sharp and no tail-gaters!!!

Yup. I rather have the look, and only the back of my xB being filthy than being stock w/ no wing.
