Hey everyone, just got my insurance info in the mail and I'm ____ED!

My whole family does insurance through SafeCo.

6 months of full coverage on my xA for me, a 17 year old student with the good grades discount and a clean record comes to a grand total of....

$2,383.10

Keep in mind, this is every 6 months, not every year. That's almost $5,000 a year!Does anyone else find this a bit odd, that my insurance for a year accounts for about a third of the cost of my entire car?

Yeah, our neighbors do our insurance, and I thought we did that to get good deals... guess not. I hear it should lower significantly after I turn 18, is this true?

Also, a friend of mine has a 98 Civic, but his parents have him as primary under an old Mazda pickup of theirs, and secondary on the civic, this way, it cuts down on the insurance costs. I also own a 72 Chevelle, think I would be able to do something like that to lower my costs?

yeah man, neighbor or not those seem like really high prices esp. considering what you drive. which is esssentialy a station wagon economy car (no dis just a fact). I would shop around alot. for full coverage with no deductable im a little under 500 every 6 months. sure i dont live in california (vegas insurance rates arestill very high)i have a premium status with state farm and im married with a clean driving record and i have as many other discounts going as possible but. 2400 is insane. One of my main reasons for not buying protege5 was because insurance would have been like 800. maybee you can find better rates elsewhere and get your current compay to compete. good luck.

jjjjjeeeeeeeeeeeeeeez! Dude, that is entirely too much. I had a suspended license, 4 tickets, and my insurance was still only about $650 for 6 months. You're getting hosed. When I moved to california my insurance went down, and when I bought my scion it went down even more.
You need to shop around I think.

I would shop around on that insurance quote. Are you parents putting you on their policy? I have my xB and my 96' Nissan for only $1800/year. I am older, single, keep the car garaged but insure two vehicles.

Too High. I'm only 19 and it's only costing $800/6 months for my xB with full coverage and this is with Allstate Insurance. I have 2 accidents over $500 and 1 speeding/ran 3 stop signs ticket. All when I was 17 and it never got anywhere that high. My brother on the otherhand is only 16 and he is only charged $1400/6 months for a 91 Taurus that only covers the other guys car.

Thanks for all the replies guys. On monday we're calling back out neighbor and telling them that it's too high, and because of that, my dad will be driving the Scion and I will go back to the Chevelle. Although he will never drive the Scion, that's what they will think, and I should hopefully get some cheaper rates. I'll keep ya updated.

That's really weird. When I bought my xA, I was in the exact same situation. 17, student, good grades discount, no wrecks...grand total of $136 a month. Yeah...odd.

kids,

insurance varies greatly state to state.
Obviously carrier, history, and coverage amount make a difference, but location makes a HUGE difference.

Insurance for my 300ZX TwinTurbo in California is half of what I would have paid if I had it back in my home state of Connecticut. I was so shocked, that I called 3 other brokers. All of them were within $400 of each other. $400 was nothing when your looking at $4k/yr ins, and at the time I was 25 and a clean record.

Try going to www.esurance.com I went there tonight to check insurance for my car, and they told me 2000, while progressive wanted 5. These are yearly quotes. Just an idea, could help you. And that is on my own policy.

i was in your shoes once.... now, 22, a modded 96 honda civic (totalled), 89 ford aerostar (family hand down), a modded 93 civic, a soon-to-be-modded 2005 scion xa, all fully insured (except the 96 civic which had 2 accidents prior to the total), a dozen speeding tickets in 5 states and the island of guam i pay..... $1,035 for 6 months.... not bad for being with them for 6 years...

I think another important factor that most people don't know about with insurance is your credit report. Many insurance companies also look at your credit record, the worse your record the higher premium you pay. This can make it hard on younger drivers as well since they may not have the credit history of older folks.

As for my primiums on my xA RS 1.0, I pay $60.00 per month through Progressive, but have a 2 car discount. I'm 33 with a clean driving record.

Hiya,

I shopped around quite a bit for insurance. The best deal I found was the insurance program with Costco. It was significantly cheaper than anywhere else. Even if you have to pony up the dollars for Costco membership, it might be worth it.
