View Full Version : Shim Kits axiom 12-22-2004, 06:31 PM How do shim kits for the rear tires effect handling, do they improve it or is it only for looks? hahajoey 12-22-2004, 06:34 PM wider is better right? im not 100% sure, but if the wheels are spread MORE apart, i think u'll just have better traction.. rear traction is very important even in FWD cars. i dont see a down side to it. u get to have less sunken wheels, u'll have better traction! what else can u ask for!? axiom 12-22-2004, 07:01 PM I guess I just wanted to know if it would hurt or hinder the performance. Epitrochoid 12-22-2004, 08:40 PM I guess I just wanted to know if it would hurt or hinder the performance. The wider track improves handling. I've noticed that the car feels a bit more stable around sharp turns with the shims installed. I have the 5mm wheel spacers on order too and that should improve it even more (and look better too!). axiom 12-22-2004, 10:12 PM What size do you have now and do you add to that or replace it? Sorry for my ignorance. Epitrochoid 12-22-2004, 11:32 PM What size do you have now and do you add to that or replace it? Sorry for my ignorance. Right now I have 5mm hub shims and I will add the 5mm wheel spacers when they arrive for a total of 10mm out from stock. I like doing it this way better than using a 10mm wheel spacer. Did you see my post here...? http://www.scionlife.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=39123[/url] axiom 12-23-2004, 04:51 PM I some how missed that post, Last question. Why do it 5mm and 5mm? Would it hurt to do just 10mm hub spacer? squirrel 12-23-2004, 05:02 PM I wider track up front as compared to rear improves handling and steering response. Most "street" cars have this designed OEM, but because of aesthetics (appearance), most will add spacers to the rear tires to "flush out" the rear tires. This is accomplished so that the vehicle's tires do not appear to be inwardly tucked and move them outward so they are flush w/ the fender lip. This can also be accomplished be running staggered fitment wheels. squirrel 12-23-2004, 05:04 PM What size do you have now and do you add to that or replace it? Sorry for my ignorance. But then again, some "expert" will come along and second guess me. axiom 12-23-2004, 05:38 PM Great! Thanks! uncompiled 12-23-2004, 05:44 PM But then again, some "expert" will come along and second guess me. You keep saying that you're not an "expert", but you stayed at a Holiday Inn? Is this a CA/regional thing? I haven't seen anyone denounce your advice on these forums yet... Dewmerz 12-23-2004, 05:49 PM What size do you have now and do you add to that or replace it? Epitrochoid said in this thread and the other one he is running 5mm hub shims from Van but when I look at Van's site he only has 10mm listed. Is there a 5mm shim (not wheel spacer)? I want to order a set of the shims soon but want to be clear on what I am getting. Epitrochoid 12-23-2004, 06:08 PM Right now I have 5mm hub shims OPPS! Sorry guys, the SHIMS are almost 10mm and not 5mm. I confused myself. :D |
