New stereo or new speakers?

New stereo or new speakers?
Hi,
A friend of mine told me that instead of changing the factory speakers, to rather change the stereo and that I would notice a much greater difference in sound quality than changing the speakers and keeping the same stereo (I have an xB 2009). Any opinions on this?

What's different about the stereos? I thought that it was a matter of the speaker's output and quality. I assumed that all the CD players / radios do is just output digital signals.
What qualities should I look for when buying a radio?

yes but there aren't a lot of tunability features on it. no real frequency control or anything like that. trust me. i went from the upgraded headunit to a d3 and the difference was night and day.

LOL! Here's what I wanted to upgrade my sound to:
Alpine SPR-13s (90 watts RMS + two tweeters)
Alpine SPR-13c (90 watts RMS)
Alpine S-series 10" Subwoofer (200 watt RMS)
I was thinking that I could install all this and get something amazing in my car. Are you saying that it WONT be as good as getting a new head unit? I really don't want to go over budget but I have to ask, around how much money do you think I should spend on a head unit that will be decent? I don't need something that's state-of-the-art, or a GPS, video playback, PS3, w/e.

get a good headunit, buy some cdt speakers on ebay, amp them up, and you won't regret it. i got this set up and have since installed it in 2 other xb's and the sound quality you'll get is amazing.

Cool, but what kind of headunit? I heard from an audio technician that the factory HU is programmed to output only a certain frequency range so as not to damage the factory speakers. I'm assuming that the need to buy a new HU is to get the full range of sounds. Is this correct?

Will this do the trick?
