Went to the dealership for the 1st oil change
I've had my xA for 4 months with 3900 miles.
The service manager tells me don't bother.
I ask him what about the people recommending the 1st oil change way before 5000 miles, and he says thats all bs, the people that say that are not Toyota engineers. He said that 5000 miles or every 6 months is perfectly fine and doing oil changes more frequently won't make the car last that much more longer. I didn't argue, less oil changes means less time wasted.
So there you go. The manual says every 5000 miles. No need to do it sooner.

The dealership said the same thing to me. The toyota oil supposely able to last until 5K with normal driving. I did my first 3 free oil change with Toyota, but now I switch to Mobil 1 and change every 4k miles.
takumi is on the money.... im gonna switch to mobil 1. 5000 is perfectly fine if you want change it at 3500. it doesnt hurt to change your oil that often as long as you have the time and money. but dont worry about it 5000 is fine.

There's nothing wrong with changing your oil early on. It can serve as an added peace of mind, expecially for those who love their cars. I've already switched to Mobil 1 syn @ 1000, and am pretty happy knowing the fact that my car is getting the best it can.
Besides, I can pretty much do the changes myself and save on labor, so 30 bucks for synthetic and a filter is a pretty damn good deal for me :D

I alternate between 87 and 89 octane depending on the conditions I expect to drive in. Always Chevron stations too!
Thanks for the heads up Dante :D I rarely ever go to walmart, but now it seems like I have two reasons. One for cheaper oil and the other for the Hella "angel eye" foglights I'm going to try to install later.

at wal mart near me mobil one is 20.02 for the 5qt easy carry. damn that 2 cent difference. lol if u know a guy at a toyota parts place u can get the toyot filter for like 5 flat or less if u buy alot at once.
Scion pays for the first 3 oil changes
I change my oil every 3000 miles - just a habit I guess. I would feel like crap if I waited 5000. Had too many "oil related" problems with other cars before (which led to my xA purchase).
