View Full Version : Black headliner?
jdubb123 11-07-2008, 05:36 PM I was thinking about changing the headliner from tan to black. Would this be kinda pointless? And how much do you think it would run me?
Only thing i don't know about is the sunroof shades.... don know how im gonna change that to black.
BTW just a plain black cloth. I'm not into the swede or anything.
Thanks!
NauticalBlue06 11-07-2008, 05:47 PM Your headliner is tan? They have fabric dyes that you can spray on it to simply change the color, and the DIY is pretty easy so the only thing it would run you would be the price of the dye...
CHPRBOX8 11-07-2008, 05:50 PM just spray die it that is what i did on the xb. and then when the headliner is out you can remove the shades and do the same to them
jdubb123 11-07-2008, 05:57 PM Dye? Never new you could do that. Does it come out good? Any pics? And where do i get it?
2006bluetc 11-07-2008, 06:02 PM I recovered my interior in black suede... I like it looks much better
UNiT_xEr0 11-07-2008, 06:03 PM or you can fully suede it like mine

rosedaleny806 11-07-2008, 06:06 PM that looks really good ive been wanting to change my grey interior headliner to black so u say u jus spray this on and thats it?
jdubb123 11-07-2008, 06:10 PM Okay sweet thanks for the help guys.
Yeah i googled it and found some stuff and what i meant to ask was whats the best brand for this stuff.... even though i didnt really say that at all before lol
And will my interior smell like paint afterwards?
CHPRBOX8 11-07-2008, 06:14 PM that looks really good ive been wanting to change my grey interior headliner to black so u say u jus spray this on and thats it?
yes that is all i did i bought 6 cans of the dye...4.5 cans on the headliner and 1.5 cans for the sunvisors

yes i will smell like paint but for only a few days...i sprayed a coat and let i dry for a week then i did the final coat and waited another week then put back in the car and i smelled for a couple more days....but i smoke in the car so i did this to get rid of the smoke stains in the headliner and it has been like 7 months and still looks like it did the day i put it in
CHPRBOX8 11-07-2008, 06:30 PM but i WOULD SUGGEST to use some type of upulistry(sp) cleaner on the head liner 1st.....after i was done i noticed that there were some spots that were in the headliner form rubbing the dirt out that stayed in there. but when its in the car you realy cant see them....i know where they are and can spot them with no problems but others can
jdubb123 11-07-2008, 06:49 PM hmmm i think i would rather just buy the same material cloth the factory uses but in black and use adhesive to stick it. Would this work? And where can i get the cloth material?
And i think ill paint the rest of the stuff like the hatch plastic and shades with something.
I would just rather do that IMO
CHPRBOX8 11-07-2008, 07:04 PM you can do that also you can just go to like joannfabrics and they would have the faric and the glue
jdubb123 11-07-2008, 07:22 PM you can do that also you can just go to like joannfabrics and they would have the faric and the glue
Yeah thats what i was thinking too
Okay what about the plastic pieces. What should i use to paint those? And does anyone know where to get some pics of a tc with full black interior like i want to do. I cant seem to find any

GQQSE13 11-07-2008, 07:46 PM defiantely some great info as i didnt know that was possible either and knew it'd cost a pretty penny to wrap it and the pillars in suede
GenericUserName 11-07-2008, 07:47 PM the sun roof cover will still be tan though
jdubb123 11-07-2008, 07:54 PM the sun roof cover will still be tan though
Im painting it black to match just dont know with what paint
Sciontistical_One 11-07-2008, 07:59 PM Why does most everyone keep saying tan?... Did I get a different headliner color since mine is a Spec? Mine is gray, and I thought they all were gray from the factory...
I'm not complaining, because tan would look horrible in my Flint Mica.

just go to walmart and get some krylon fusion for plastic in the color you want...just sand the peice spray like 3 coats of paint alowing time to dry and the 2 layers of clear.

no every scion came with black bottom and grey top in all modles....somebody just stated the wrong color...or somebody was having a cigare smoking party in the car and turned it tan

it dose not cost that much if you diy. only would cost a ton if you took it to a shop to do.....this is pretty simple that a novice can do it if they take there time

ya, only cost wouldbe the materials to get it it wrapped ontop of the suede. i talked to someone and cost them 800 to have it done. i dont think headliner would be too bad once got it out of the car and get it to streatch and fit just right, but the pillars might be a pain cuz of the airbags.........
but im half tempted to try this painting int he spring
jdubb123 11-08-2008, 03:53 AM one thing i didnt think about are the sun shades..... What how the hell am i gonna wrap that?
2006bluetc 11-08-2008, 04:29 AM I got black fabric painted and painted the sun visors.. it worked great
captainlaziness 11-08-2008, 04:53 AM just spray die it that is what i did on the xb. and then when the headliner is out you can remove the shades and do the same to them
What does the fabric on the headliner feel like after spraying? Is it still soft? Or does it get crusty or chunky after the dye is applied?

Ive looked around online and heard it gets kinda crusty... Thats another reason why i dont want to dye it.
quadboy47 11-09-2008, 02:38 AM I did my entire car in black suede. I went to AC moore and bought 6 yards of black MICRO suede. I also bought Head liner glue TM. lol Yea there really is glue called head liner glue. WORKED PERFECTLY. Be careful though because its super sticky and gets all over. i used to cans of glue 19.99 a can. Kinda expensive but worth it. i did not put suede on the door panels because mine are already black. Tip of adive tho. THE HEADLINER IS A PAIN IN THE REAR END!!!!! i have to re-do mine in the spring

So come it was such a pain??
quadboy47 11-09-2008, 05:06 PM there are so many curves in the head liner and the holes for the sun roof are a pain. you have to cut the corners almost perfect if you take a look at mine i messed up and cut to much
