Default bad gas mileage

i bought my 06 xb brand new in march of 07 after i came back from a 15 month tour in iraq and in recent months i have noticed that my gas mileage has dropped significantly. lastnight i hooked an Actron Auto Scanner Plus CP 9180 up to my xb's computer and it said that all my codes were just fine. i need to know wut could be the problem. any suggestions?

find out what your actual mileage is..
fill up your tank note your mileage

drive till you need to fill up again..write down your mileage
note how many miles you have driven
and divide by how many gallons of gas you used

you will then be able to say..my box gets 30 mpg's or 23 mpgs.. or whatever it is mpg's you are getting

otherwise..when you say you are getting bad MPG's it leaves a lot to the imagination

how bad is your mileage?

Yea, I don't trust the scanners. My scangauge has never been very accurate in averaging the mileage.

What you need to do is divide the miles you got out of the tank by the number of gallons it took to fill up. Like Mike said.

Winter gas is a different blend of fuel that is better in cold weather. Unfortunately, it's not as good when it comes to mileage. Winter gas generally gets pushed out sometime in October.

I went from 31mpg on regular stuff to 26mpg on winter stuff.

Winter gas plus the 10% ethanol blend in Indiana really sucks...

i asked around at the local gas stations down here today and found that no one uses winter gas ever around here it just doesnt get cold enough. and half the gas stations dont even offer ethenol. gas is also cheap! $1.82 per gallon and in oklahoma city its as low as $ 1.77 per gallon! so i guess it makes up for my bad mileage! not really could it be that my fuel system is f***ed?

Lawton(Yuck) you must be in the Army. Have to be. i was stationed in Altus [C-17](double yuck yuck). Even though you are part of the gfamily I still want to thank you for your dedication and sacrafice. Much luv bro.

I dont know what the problem is, I have noticed a problem with mine. It use to eat gas like an 8 cyln car but found out what was killing me were the bosch platnium spark plugs. so I went and got me plugs from toyota. I doesnt eat it much anymore but still i am getting less. I filled up fri night and now 214 miles with 1/4 tank to go doesnt seem like much to me. I use to get 280 but i will see if it will be the same next tank. I am really tired of the small tank. I am still wondering would I buy a second generation xB. I really want something that can give me 350 city and maybe 4 to 600 miles hwy. Good luck with that and if you should find as piece to that puzzle, let me know.

alright, first off, you gotta actually take the time to calculate your MPG, so far all we have is you saying it is terrible, but we have no idea how terrible.

also, is it an automatic or manual?

how many miles are on your box? when is the last time you changed the oil, air filter, spark plugs, are your tires properly inflated? how does your car drive? does it seem sluggish or have engine hesitation?

if you box is an 06, and you bought it in 07, you should still have plenty of warranty left, take it to your dealership and ask for a consumption test.

and lastly, if gas in your area is under 2 dollars a gallon, STFU! since gas for my supercharged tc is still about 2.50 a gallon. lol, jk.

First off Vanilla is a 2005 auto box, slightly oversize tires (which makes the odo 6.1% off, meaning I need to multiply the odo reading by 1.06 to get true mileage when figuring MPG).

Long trip, summer gas, highway driving: between 36-39MPG.

City driving (the majority for Vanilla), summer gas: 27-30MPG.

If I'm driving like a squirrel (it happens on occasion) I can drop all the way to 22MPG...

(All of this is on "Top Tier" - usually Chevron - fuel and synthetic oil.)

Pffft, regular here is down to $2.739/gal. The Seneca reservation 15 miles away is charging ~$2.25 or so (and they're tax-free, so they're really fleecing people since the wholesale price is currently $1.25/gal).

The box actually handles surprisingly well in up to about 5 inches of snow with decent tires.

Over 5 inches and you are taking chances with the front, and especially rear, lips...

(There are times I wish I had access to the original bB lips in winter...)

Blocking the bottom grille seemed to help. I have my tire pressure pretty high, accelerate gently, and actually stick to the speed limit (no matter how many arguments it starts with my better half). On summer gas, I was averaging 37-38mpg, now, I'm down to 34-35. This weekend, I'm going to block off most of the mid grille too, now that it takes noticeably longer for the engine to warm up with the change in weather.

The blue HVAC lights were from Oznium (along with the flexible 16-LED dome light), and my gauge cluster has piece of light gels from a free Lee Filters swatch book between the LEDs and the clear plastic piece on the gauge face.

As far as driving the xB in the winter, it's not bad. It's not powerful enough to get you in much trouble, even with all-season tires. I should invest in snow tires, admittedly, but I am cheap. FWD + traction control = competent in the snow. Not amazing, but it won't freak you out too badly.
