View Full Version : Cargo cover is a joke

Just got the cargo cover. It wasn't at all what I expected. For the price it was, it was a complete rip-off. It's not that it was a bad design or poor quality, it was the way it operated. The tightening straps and hooks were a joke. You would think for that price, Toyota could have put a nicer tightening strap and hook setup. Something that worked a little easier, like the straps on some luggage.

Sure would like to have something covering all my stuff from prying eyes.
Any ideas anyone ??
Anyone have the same luck with the cargo cover that I did??

Yeah it is a piece of crap but it hides what you don't want to be seen. $20 would have been a better price for it

The cargo net is crap as well. Its functional, but not in the way I expected. The cargo net is simply a hanging net to put stuff inside the net. I was expecting tension, something to keep the stuff inside my trunk from falling out...

I remember someone made their own cargo cover for under $10 in materials. It sounded like a good way to do it and sounded real easy/durable. Maybe "search". It was about 3-4 months back.

Good luck

That's a great idea. The factory one is not all that bad. It's just the hooks and strap tightening system. You can't get the thing to tighten up or loosen. It just hangs there all loose and flimsy looking. If you could find different buckles and straps, it would be sweet.

I wish I could find the JDM one also.

I've got the cover.... got it off ebay so I didn't pay retail which is way too much... I'm just happy it hides what I don't want to be seen.... but it's true that the way you put it on sucks

Yea, thanks everyone. I had just found the Carson site and was coming back here to post it. The hard cover is nice, but at three times the price, I'm going to have to think about it three times longer.

I blew $6 at Wal Mart for a nice, fluffly BLACK bath towel that works like a charm for masking whatever is in the back. Give it a shot.

im thinking you could make something with some metal or wooden rods and get a fiberglass kit and just fiberglass a panel and carpet it. it would take some work to sand down the sides and make it with the right curves but it would look nice and maybe some 6x9's could be mounted in it if it was made sturdy enough.

my ford festiva had a real nice rear deck lid, and when i opened the hatch it lifted up with it. maybe i will look and see if something can be made like that.

i havent really bothered with mine yet because i dont have a system in it. and when i do itll be subs under the seats and a amp in the spare tire spot anyway

how much is it?

I don't mind both of these items. The net holds stuff, and if you hook it to the rear hooks, it holds more. And the cargo cover, while floppy, does have the advantage of being flexible, so when I have something a tad taller then other stuff, it hides it still.

I replaced the hooks on one side of the cargo cover with the small "Ball Bungees" that are used for tarps.

It keeps the cover nice and tight and it is easier to unhook.

Eventually I'll probably find something better, but for now this is a pretty cheap and easy mod.

Total cost: about 50 cents.
