I installed MT-90 back about two years ago and its just not cutting it for me anymore in the winter. I grind third gear when i down shift from fourth when it is cold out. Is there any other alternative gear oil that is better than MT90?

One of the mods around here went from MT-90 to Amsoil and prefers Amsoil now over MT-90.
Along with Amsoil, I've 'heard' some good things about Motul gear oil in an old butt transmission problem thread awhile back.

Ever since the cold hit here, I've been needing something new as well...in hopes I can actually shift the transmission, lulz.

yea i've used mt90 and i am looking for something else... but i heard that you should change the mtf every 50k miles for max performance

I'm only at 28.5k miles, but I still need something new.

i dont think you will notice much difference going from one synthetic gear oil to another.. their properties are close if not the same..

a jump from stock to synthetic yes you will notice some but not even that obvious like OMG my tranny is super smooth now

but yeah feel free to try amsoil, it wouldnt hurt

In OK, we vary from 25F to 60F in one day sometimes. Winter the lows are between 25-35F on average when it is night time cold.

Ace, where can i get some Amsoil? And something in MT-90 just does not like to let my 3rd gear syncro mesh properly, I need to try something new before I get boosted.

What are you guys doing? Your are supposed to shift slow and keep rpms down until the engine and tranny are warmed up. dosnt matter the oil or temp.

Its around 25-35 in the morning when I go to work, I let the car warm up for a min and then shift slowly and and keep rpms down. Once the car is warm I have absolutely no problem.

You should make sure you warm up the tranny before driving. If you are tuly grinding when the engine is warm, then try penzoil synchromesh. If that doesn't work, you need new synchros.

I would use royal purple synchromax. I use it in all of my cars and customer cars. It will give you a much smoother shift and doesnt have the hard shift in the cold.

I know all of my cars (MT) have been hard to get in gears when cold. If you try hard or quick shifts when cold, it will grind.

That is what I am using and still get a hard catch in 2nd when cold. but I know that is normal

Has anyone tried RedLine MTL? That's a 70w80 gear oil designed for colder temps. I know that www.tdiparts.com sells it (look under "transmission" on their site). I've bought parts and fluids from them in the past and they are good people to deal with. Of course, they mainly sell parts for VW TDIs, so not of much use to Scion owners other than their fluids.

Sounds like you may need sychro. Is it the same after warmed up?

lol
There is nothing wrong with mine. I was pointing out that when mine is cold going from 1st to 2nd you have to go slow and you can feel it catch. it dosnt grind or anything. If I slam it into gear and try a quick shift it will grind. but this is when it is COLD as in sitting in 30 degrees cold.
Mine is perfectly fine when warm.
Every car I have ever driven has been like that.
My old Bimmer was an auto, but would ride rough and would shift slow when cold.

i've heard bad things about royal purple gear oil, they said its too thin and leaves some residue on tranny... some complained that it messed up their synchro too..

Never had a negative experience with it and have used it for a long time. I have used it in many of different vehicles. Synchros are usually messed up during a missed shift. I not only have used this in daily drivers but race applications too. But I guess everyone has an opinion!

I know Royal Purple has a few dif types. If wrong used, it will cause problems. I know when I first got it, recommended from my brother, I ordered the same stuff he got, realized after maybe only 100 miles that Its not what was recommended for our cars. So I switched to the recommended weight.
