I am getting conflicting info on the speaker depth for the rear doors. Has anyone done a flush mount, and has anyone done a surface mount.

I am looking at a pait of JL 6.5 subs for the rear doors. The mounting depth is 3.5 inches. Would these be better surface mounted on the doors ? Vibration issues ?
