Default Your Own Custom Turbo Setup ??

Hey I just wanted to know if any of you have made your own turbo setup? Have you looked on line for each part individually ? Where did you get them and how much did it cost you ? and was it worth the time and money ?

I have been looking around and found everything I would need minus the fuel managements, for around 1100 $ , Most of the parts I found one ebay. ( I haven't bought anything was just looking ). and this was only looking for about 30 minutes. I know if I look longer I could find better deals.

I have a custom kit and I'll give you my 2 cents.

My turbo cost more then what your planning on spending on the whole setup. Ebay products will only cause more problems leading to spending more money.

Buy name brands and forget the headaches from the cheap crap.

alot of ppl do it on here, just look around.

find the parts you need in the classifieds on here, and/or reputable sites like ptuning and dezod.

only thing probably worth buying from ebay is there cast iron mani! thats it. the rest buy online from dezod,p-tuning, Turbo toyotas. dont go cheap like i did and ended replacing everything to good name brand stuff lol. well almost everything except the inercooler piping and mani lol.

i would never buy a mani off ebay.

the only things that can be bought off ebay (imo) are universal things like piping for intercoolers, piping for intakes, couplers, etc

dont buy a part that is detrimental to the rest of the kit on ebay.

Ebay intercooler kits are terrible from what i've seen/heard. I've seen a couple where it looked like the kit was almost for a different car.

If you need to cut the bumper to fit your piping setup, chances are you need to return your ebay kit and buy something with more R&D.

Ebay is good for tail lights... and thats about it.

I think my original post is going the wrong way. I didn't mean getting no name parts. I was talking about getting name brand used parts. On ebay. and searching the internet for sale items.

as for the no name stuff on ebay. I guess I have been one of the real lucky ones when it come to them. I have never had a problem with parts I have got of ebay. Even when I bought some coilovers for my celica , they fit perfectly and I had them on for over 2 years with no problems.

my buddy has an ebay turbo kit on his honda, so far its only had 2 days of testing cuz the tranny blew from all the extra power, so tranny swap is in progress, then comes the real test to see how long the turbo lasts.

some sellers on ebay have separate decent performance store.. look into those sellers not those who sells turbo and panty hoses lol.. for not known brands, you for sure can safely buy the pipes, intercooler, hoses and those not so complex and high stress parts

you will be fine with a cast iron manifold from ebay which is cheap there. you cant go wrong with cast iron mani it wont crack or anything. its cast iron! but as far as the intercooler goes i dunno and piping you get what you pay for if it says for scion tc yuh it might be for the car but i bet you that you will have to modify something in that piping but then again shouldnt be much for that piping.

ebay is what it is...

unfortunately

but if you take your time you can find decent parts.

They only item I would not recommend purchasing of ebay would be the turbo.

Other than being careful when selecting chargepiping(as it might not fit with the other items you have purchased and might require modification) those are the only 2 big things I would look out for.

Just take your time, and do your homework. It will save you money in the long run.

And when your all done and have your parts installed....

DO NOT SKIMP ON TUNING!!!

good parts or bad parts without a good tune their all crap.

Regards-

Todd

stay far away from those turbos....they are grenades attached to your manifold..

i have a fully custom kit and i took my time with it and got great deals on the forum locally and on ebay.

the only thing i got on ebay was the manifold......the infamous cast iron that alot of people who go the custom route on the forum use. i love it....never leaks no cracks

a friend of mine w/ a white tC is custom as well but is running the dezod manifold and he deals w/ manifold leaks all the time, i never get them. only once but it was the wastegate that was not properly installed.

everything on ebay is crap almost, even the intercoolers suck IMO...the pipes ok but you gota cut and weld them......NO IC piping kit on ebay is direct bolt on for us. the ICs are just pure crap if you take ur time looking for deals on say the forum theyll save you tons of money! i waited on the forum checking classfields and came across a guy parting out his dezod kit and i nabbed the intercooler for 100 bucks shipped, it was a rediculous deal for a dezod FMIC in great condition.

just dont skimp on tuning, i paid an arm and a leg o n tuning and its still crap, just dont have a budget you never know what you are going to come across in the custom route. nohting is ever 100% bolt on

but yeah the ebay/treadstone cast iron manifold ftmfw

Since you're looking to buy used, be mindful. On the turbo itself, the oil seals and bearings can wear out, the compressor blades can become damaged or worn, and the wastegate can get damaged. Used manifolds could possibly be cracked or warped where they mount to the head, use a gasket and copper RTV to prevent leakage.

If you're buying a kit, keep in mind peices may be missing. I bought a used Greddy turbo kit for the xB, and it came in missing a heat shield, the exhaust manifold mounting studs, the nuts to hold the downpipe to the turbo housing, three silicone couples, two hose clamps, and had a damaged oil feed line. This wasn't an eBay buy, was a local purchase, but I would imagine it could also happen with eBay kits. It will cost me about an extra $60 to replace the missing hardware. Fortunately, it's standard stuff. On the plus side, they threw in the intake and a Greddy oil catch tank with it.
