Finally, installed rear Tokico shocks this weekend (w/ stock springs). First impressions, much smoother ride in the rear, I wish I had money to get the front struts. The intial difference, that I noticed, is that the compression is close to stock but the rebound is much quicker. But who knows, maybe the stock ones are getting worn out (39K miles). Either way I so far I like the way it feels. Also, I think the rear camber is a little bit better, but it was late at night. It was a small fraction of a degree, probably due to wear.

Are you on stock springs? I'm still debating whether to get these or the TRD shocks to go with my TRD springs. My stock ones are waaay too bouncy after 16k miles.

So are these more of just an OEM replacement or do they feel like they made your xb2 handle better?

i'm still waiting for someone to jump into these shocks w/a drop.
i've heard some good things about the trd but i don't think it's worth it's high price. i think all trd parts is overpriced. just my .02 cents

IIRC, camber is not adjustable in the rear.

IIRC, camber is not adjustable in the rear.
Correct, and it's not adjustable in the front either without camber bolts (not recommended) or camber plates.

I have camber plates on my air :D

Price wise, just for an example, AJusa you can get the front struts and rear shocks for $318.84 w/ free shipping (unless your in CA, then add in tax). So average price for TRD's are running $400+. To me its kind of a no brainer-about $100 saved. Not to mention who makes TRD's shocks? It ain't toyota and there are a handlful of shock manufacturers. I wish someone would make an adjustable set.

AAG : Hands down they ride much smoother, and I have yet to see negative effect on handling so far (but it is early). Another thing to remember, like I read in an article once, Car makers buy from the cheapest manufacturer. Bottom line is the cheaper u make it, the more profit they get!!! $$$$. Right?

congrats on your install. You will realize more of a difference with fronts. Shocks don't change the geometry of suspension. Many guys swear by stock springs and premium shocks. My OEM's are tired at 30K and i need to do something

srb219 - are you going to install it yourself? I am thinking about doing my front struts too.

yes, brother and I will install front and rear springs/shocks. He has air compressor and impacts. I will rent spring compressor. We figure on an "all day" project with rough tape measure alignment

Can you measure the outside diameter of the tokico dampers? :)

Tokiko's always been a pretty good brand of shocks, for those of you that went with springs for budget reasons.... I'd recommend pairing it up wiht a set a shocks once your stock shocks blow.

those that go w/ spring/shock combo I always recommend Tokico, Koni yellow's, and in some applications KYB GR2's.... not sure if those shocks are mated w/ the same stance as the current xB2 springs but they've always worked out for my friends in the past w/ various other vehicles including Lexus's. I think they're definitely well built.

The only aftermarket shocks out are TRDs and Tokicos. I wish Bilstein/Koni came out with stuff for our cars. THEY are the best :)

stock shocks really not blown but replaced with Tokico's when I put in Edibach Pro springs. Very satisfied. Yes a little expensive but the first time you enter or exit ramp on freeway you will feel the change

is the ride stiffer or softer?? could you guys elaborate a little bit more on the changes of the ride?...thanks in advance.

Softer than stock.

FromTheOld

Softer than stock.

Hopefully due to better valving and not cause it's actually valved towards softer springs.

I talked to a Tokico representative and he said it would handle about 20% stiffer than stock fine.

ellisinseoul
03-30-2009, 04:07 PM
so which is it? stiffer or softer?...one says stiffer and the other says softer?

srb219

Difficult to tell because i changed springs at the same time. My combo of tokico's and Pro springs is slightly stiffer than stock. Much better control in turns and reduced lean. We have bad roads from winter in Cleve. Oh and have hit some big holes with teeth still intact

FromTheOld

Good valving could make a car more comfortable and still handle better, which is why my previous post said what I said.

I'm basically saying that if their valving is good, it will feel "softer" than stock, but in reality, the handling is still better and the damper is able to control stiffer springs than stock.

Old , exactly why I replaced stock shocks with tokico's when new springs went in. had almost 350 lbs in back yesterday and she sagged a bit but everything oK

i put a stereo system and a whole load of second skin and the back sags with my TRD springs...i wonder if changing out the shock would help with the sagging?

They have the full set of these shocks on shox.com for $289. That's the best price i have seen them. They're actually in El Cajon (east San Diego) so I might try to pick them up. I'm still deciding if I should do it though...

From what I understand, the Tokico HPs are designed to compress more easily than a stock shock at low velocity and will stiffen up the faster they are compressed. I guess that means a softer ride out on the highway, and a stiffer ride on quick bumps, etc. This might be a stupid question but how would these work on a speedbump for example? Will they ride softer than stock if you take the bump slowly, but feel really stiff compared to stock if you take a speedbump at greater speed? It sounds like they will sort of synergize with progressive rate springs, giving you more of what the springs deliver. In other words they're be even softer when cruising and stiffer when driving aggressively. Do I have that right?

I've never replaced the shocks on any of my cars so I'm a total noob about this stuff. Somebody convince me that these with my NF210 springs will be worth it! Got any input GoHIN?

edit: just spoke to the a guy at shox.com and these can't ship out till May 15th. The reason is that shox.com doesn't have them in stock and all the xB2 shocks in Tokico's warehouse are currently being relocated in a different warehouse.

changing shocks will not help sagging. springs control ride height

Yes it will, I changed out my stock shocks with TRD ones (with the trd springs that were already on the vehicle) and the ride height is higher than before. Before I could not see the rear trd springs and now I partially see them now as well as the rear sway bar is more visible.

Ok, AAG just doesn't agree with laws of physics. Shocks are filled with fluid and will compress with load.
