Are upgrades such as mobile HID or other HID upgrades legal. Everything I see says offroad use only. On a secound note took out my Nokya 80 watt bulbs and went back to stock. The Nokyas actually put out less usable light at a higher wattage.

Technically, no modifications to factory headlights are legal. If you stick to aftermarket HID's in 4300K (the whitest and coincidentally the brightest) you shouldn't have any legal problems. The legal problems come with higher Kelvin ratings which get more and more blue the higher you go (and also put out less and less lumens, or less visible road lighting). Get MobileHID's 35 watt system in a 4300K rating and you will be loving life, and should not have any problems with Johnny Law; just make sure they aren't aimed to high.

Double that on the aim.

Make sure to Check your state regulations reguading headlamps. If you have regular vehicle inspections, like in CA, then cover your backside. Here in IA where I am, you can do about anything (we have no inspections) as long as you're colors(white, amber red) are in the proper location.

Anything brighter than stock is considered illegal, from what I've heard. I have 6000K HIDs and have no problems with cops. I'll get the occasional flashing from cars going the opposite direction, but that's all.

Depends on your state.

It's illegal in the entire US, if it didn't come from the factory (or a factory option) it is not legal. Even is you use OEM spec projectors, bulbs and ballasts and do a retro fit, it is still illegal.

Considerably HIDs from 4300k to 6000k would be the safe zone.

I'm just torn. I want better vision at night but I don't want to be the @$$ that blinds everybody. Plus, I can't afford tickets. Thanks for all your input. I'm still looking into them. I also welcome any other bulb suggestions. Do the stock fog lights help that much as far as normal night driving?

No.

Search around that website, it has a lot of other good lighting info besides the fog light link I put up.

You won't blind anyone if you put an hid kit in your low beams. I have had mine for over a year and have never once been flashed or pulled over. As long as you aim them down just a bit and stay in 4300-5000k range, you should be fine.

You will have no issues with 4300 or 5000k kits. I have never been flashed or had any issues and it's been over a year. No worries.

There is a way of modifying the 'squirrel finders' off of the stock projector lights, this requires baking headlights and unscrewing projector housing completely from headlights and grinding off metal tab aka 'squirrel finders'; it's really not that bad if you've already baked your headlights and removed before to paint housings black.

This way you get a nice cutoff beam, and you kno for sure you are not blinding people.
