Question for Automatic Trans XB owners
Still stuck deciding on 5spd or Automatic...could go either way since I have owned both types and both have their adavantages and disadvantages.....
When I test drove a new automatic, I really liked how softly and quickly the automatic goes through the gears...Could not feel the shifts and even while accelerating hard, it still changed gears nice and smooth/soft.
My question is to those who have had yours for awhile,,,,,
Have you noticed any strange shifting after you have qotten a few or many thousands of miles on them with a/c , defrost "on or off" and have you noticed any "delayed" shifts where it took awhile to go to the next gear? And has it remained nice and smooth/soft where you dont feel the shift and you just hear it?
I guess I just want to know if this is the way the car is going to drive after I have had it for years or is it just this nice in the beginning.
Thanks for your help. (oh and let me know how many miles you have on yours)

One thing I had to get used to coming out of my Sonoma pickup and into the xB was that the truck had enough slop in the drive train, and the revs were low enough, that I didn't need to be all that careful shifting from reverse to forward after backing out of the driveway. I could be rolling a tiny bit and it would shift just fine. But the xB wants to be absolutely stopped first. Front wheel drive, closer tolerances, higher idle speed, etc.
A thing I like is cruising at 70 or more, pulling out to pass and just stomping on it without contemplating whether I need to drop one gear or two. The tranny will figure out what I need and also keep me from over-revving.
Just under 11K miles and the transmission is great. Still shifts smoothly but also reacts quickly enough to kick it to a lower gear when needed. If you're doing a lot of commuting go for the auto.
28,000+ on our autobox, numerous 1\4 pass at the the local strip, and all is well, the tranny is programmable and will shift according to your driving habits. It is not a bad trade off. we love ours. Bill
Just about reaching the 10,000 mark, and like everyone before mentioned, still smooth sailing even with 19" wheels since day 1. I put 50 miles a day , 5 days a week through rush hour traffic on the Florida 836 Highway, so my choice was limited to comfort.

I like my automattic. I wanted a Manual transmission. but they didn't have the car I wanted with a manual trans. I'm happy. cause i dont have to get a new clutch every four years. wouldn't mind the gear control though!
Peace.
Peace.
About 25,000 miles in a year, no discernible difference. Never even test drove the manual, no reason to. Wouldn't help me in the 99% freeway-city, 1% twisty road conditions I drive...
Same here as far as the overdrive when cold, but that only lasts until it warms up ofcourse.I test drove a stick and it seemed a bit peppier, but my last vehicle (Nissan Frontier)was a stick and just really tired of shifting gears.I am VERY happy with the auto in the xB.
I had a 01 Tacoma with an auto and was driving back and forth from phoenix AZ and will never buy another auto again in a 4cyl vehicle(especially anything low end).I got so damn tired of the trans hunting for the right gear going through the mountains as you crossed into AZ from Cali.Granted the transmission blew up and i was trying to do 90+ at the time.Anyway it would depend on where you plan to drive really if you live in the plains you most likely won't get any benefit from a manual, but if you climb steep grades and drive through mountain passes or switch back a manual will benefit you much better than an auto in a vehicle with a tiny motor.
I of copurse got an auto as well, and not only is it smotth sailing so far with about 9750 miles, but tachometer reads 3100 going 80 mph, while on mauls your spinning it at 4000 rpm just to go 80 in 5th. Therefor, gas mileage is better in automatic as well.
