Default Burning oil in an 08

How normal is it to burn oil in an 08 tC. Ive had this car for little less than a year now, and it seems to burn a quart every 3k miles. Toyota said that its not supposed to do that at all. But so far just about every car Ive owned so far has burned oil.

The car has about 13k miles on it and is driven a little on the rough side, I do not however really rev higher than 4k. And keep the car usally inbetween 3-4k always. Its a 5-speed. As well.

Yep it is always at the same spot on the stick from when it is put in and when I take it back in......I like to check my self to be sure I know what is up with it.........I also go in at 4000 to change oil which may also help on it not getting low.

all engines will burn some amount of oil. a quart at 3k is a bit much. My only thought is if your drain plug and oil filter isn't on tight. OR The engine was never properly broken in, which is my guess, and you drive hard.

My friend had the same "problem" with his G35, the swapped the engine after 25k miles.

Other friend with the Sentra Ser had similar problem.

Pull off the intake and look into the throttle body,if it is gummed up the oil is gettign past the valve guides more than it should and gettign burned with the next cycle of cylinder firing.Other than that it can get past the rings and into piston, which is usually a sign of a worn or wearing cylinder ring, which would also be evidnet on the plugs, also check your PVC valve to see if it is ventalating properly.

Burning some is normal though, seems sticks tend to burn more than autos,at least all the ones I have had did.

You know, Ive been reading the responses and sourcing out my own info so far. And all responses have been mixed so far. Its like a 50/50 shot here. Ive asked some friends with auto 2AZ's and they say they dont burn.

Ive also asked friends who work at toyota and their responses have been that the 2AZ "is quiet the oil burner"

Frankly I dont mind paying a couple bucks for maintence over the vehical to add oil. The car is still under warrenty so far. For the first 5k brake in it was spent mostly on highway miles. Im not that an aggressive driver with my stick, I do however drive it like a stick.

As a daily diver it doesnt get beat on at all, driven to 4k then upshifted. I do however downshift instead of using the brake. Only time I really use the brake is to come to sudden stops, and at traffic lights.

But mind you, I dont think the car has ever been redline, and the 5k brake in was pretty much babied.

My first concern was went I went to toyota for my first oil change orignally. At 5 k miles they made a big deal in the parts department about the burnt quart of oil. The service deparment however was a diffrent story.

I remember this too. Like they thought I must of been a retard when the examined the car. The guy literaly took my car from me, drove it into the garage, sat in the driver seat, came out and said, yep the car checks out ok.

I damn near laughed in his face, and asked him if he enjoyed my CD that was still playing. All he said was that if it continues to persist on burning oil to come back and they will actually do something.

What are they actually going to do, replace the whole motor over a quart of oil over 3k miles? It just doesnt make much sense to me.

My car is an 08 and it comes with the 7k miles a year, or 70k miles warrenty. Im at 12k.

Now I only need the car to be dependable, thats all. I upgraded the suspension to make the drivabilty a tad more fun. And when my stock tires burn out, Ill get some new wheels and tires. Thats about the extent of the mods I plan to see on this car, I have another car, Im re-engineering.

It really can't be that serious of an issue here, what risks do I run if i let it be alone. I mean proper maintence of the car, and it should last. If when I get to 50k miles and its still doing it, Ill bring it in and make a big fuss about it, just because I can, but say for instance, how would it affect the longevitey of the motor itself if it burns oil like this.

Shouldnt be that much, if I take good care of it correct?

First off. "break-in period is to allow engine internals (specifically, the piston rings) to break in and seal properly, which theoretically will prevent oil from being burned when the engine starts to rack up miles. Don’t be alarmed, however, if during the break-in period the engine burns a little oil; that’s perfectly normal until the piston rings seat completely. it is not supposed to be at highway speeds. should be 45-50 for the first 100ish miles then roughly 50-55 until 500 always varying a little speed."

Second, never up or down shift an auto that is not designed for it. such as shifting pedals or the auto-manual shift.

I would suggest try driving it a little easier, do not shift your self, It is auto for a reason. and pay close eye on it. If it gets worse or continues to burn a large amount of oil, such as 1 quart every oil change, go to another dealer.

DoHh! my bad, I was just reading about someone else shifting there auto and got threads mixed up.

Otherwise as I stated you can burn oil in the first break in period. So just keep an eye on it, if it gets worse take it to another dealer.

Not true. I bought my car used with 12k miles, from an older lawyer and his "partner" so I only assume it was driven lightly, but switched to synthetic once i got it, and have no had one problem with burning an excessive oil. you will naturally burn maybe 1/4 to half quart per 5k oil change, depending on how you drive and how often you start your car vs miles.
