that you can not attach a long board to the roof rack because of some danger to ripping the roof rack off...

well considering how large a long board is i would think it is very very possible. it all depends on the design of the rack and the way teh board is positioned on the rack. think about and draw up some ideas of different ways of mounting it.

I'd like to know what the outcome is on this. My daughters surf, and one has a 9' board and the other an 8' Doyle soft board. Don't have a roof rack on my xB yet, but knowing it'll have to handle these two boards might take a lot of potential rack candidates out of the running...

It can be factual under certain conditions.

I installed PerryCraft DynaSport roof rails on my xB. Here's a paragraph from the PerryCraft FAQ web page that addresses your question:

Large or flat items such as plywood or watercraft can trap air and create wind lift. Secure the ends of such objects directly to the vehicle bumpers or tie downs.

The xB has tie down hook mounts in the front and rear bumpers. Consult your xB Owner's Manual under "towing the vehicle" for installation.

One potential problem is the front and rear end brackets of my rails only anchor into the thin sheet metal of the roof. Fortunately, my middle rail brackets anchor into roof structure and are very strong. This was discussed in the Roof Rails Thread cited above. To be absolutely safe, the best idea is to use the tie down hooks with nylon belts from the front bumper to the rear bumper when hauling plywood or a large surf board at high speeds.

True, except the air hitting the front of the car then travels up and pushes the front of the board up anyway.
