1) Put car on jack stands
http://i77.photobucket.com/albums/j58/bsowde/DIY/Tein_Basic/1.jpg

2) Remove wheels
http://i77.photobucket.com/albums/j58/bsowde/DIY/Tein_Basic/2.jpg

3) Remove black plastic wiper cowl, start by using a small flat blade screwdriver to carefully pry off the black plastic cap on wiper arms
http://i77.photobucket.com/albums/j58/bsowde/DIY/Tein_Basic/5.jpg

4)Remove the 14mm nuts from the wiper arm assembly
http://i77.photobucket.com/albums/j58/bsowde/DIY/Tein_Basic/6.jpg

5) Before removing wiper arms, I always mark the wiper arm location/ orientation with some tape before removing
http://i77.photobucket.com/albums/j58/bsowde/DIY/Tein_Basic/7.jpg

http://i77.photobucket.com/albums/j58/bsowde/DIY/Tein_Basic/8.jpg

6) Remove the 12 plastic clips that are holding the cowl in place
http://i77.photobucket.com/albums/j58/bsowde/DIY/Tein_Basic/3.jpg
http://i77.photobucket.com/albums/j58/bsowde/DIY/Tein_Basic/4.jpg

7) You can now remove the cowl, be careful however the cowl is two pieces, split in the middle, so be sure to support both sides
http://i77.photobucket.com/albums/j58/bsowde/DIY/Tein_Basic/cowl_off.jpg

8) Its now time to start removing the front strut assembly. Remove the 17mm nut from the sway bar link, 12mm bolt from the brake line bracket, and the 2 22mm strut bolts.
http://i77.photobucket.com/albums/j58/bsowde/DIY/Tein_Basic/9.jpg

9) You should now be able to separate the spindle assembly from the strut
http://i77.photobucket.com/albums/j58/bsowde/DIY/Tein_Basic/10.jpg

10) Now remove the 3 14mm nuts from the upper strut mount, making sure to support the strut assembly from below
http://i77.photobucket.com/albums/j58/bsowde/DIY/Tein_Basic/11.jpg

11) Remove strut assembly
http://i77.photobucket.com/albums/j58/bsowde/DIY/Tein_Basic/12.jpg

12) The Tein Basic's utilize the factory upper mount, so this will have to be removed from the factory strut. To do this remove the 17mm nut. This is were a bench vise will come in handy. **You do NOT need a spring compressor for this**
http://i77.photobucket.com/albums/j58/bsowde/DIY/Tein_Basic/13.jpg
http://i77.photobucket.com/albums/j58/bsowde/DIY/Tein_Basic/14.jpg

13) Once removed you will use the upper mount and the small washer
http://i77.photobucket.com/albums/j58/bsowde/DIY/Tein_Basic/15.jpg

Those pieces will go on the top of the Tein coilover
http://i77.photobucket.com/albums/j58/bsowde/DIY/Tein_Basic/16.jpg

14) Remove the nut that came on the coilover, and install the washer that came off the factory strut
http://i77.photobucket.com/albums/j58/bsowde/DIY/Tein_Basic/17.jpg

15) Then install the factory upper mount plate, using the nut you took off in step 14. Torque the nut to 35 ft/lbs. *You can just hand tighten this and tighten later when in the vehicle to make it easier*
http://i77.photobucket.com/albums/j58/bsowde/DIY/Tein_Basic/18.jpg

16) Install the coilover into the upper strut mount in the car, and finger tighten the 3 14mm nuts
http://i77.photobucket.com/albums/j58/bsowde/DIY/Tein_Basic/19.jpg

17) Connect the sway bar link to the coilover and finger tighten the 17mm nut
http://i77.photobucket.com/albums/j58/bsowde/DIY/Tein_Basic/20.jpg

18) Using a floor jack underneath the control arm, slowly jack the control arm/spindle assembly up until the mounting holes in the the coilover, and spindle assembly align. Once aligned using a little bit of anti-seize, insert the 22mm strut bolts into holes.
http://i77.photobucket.com/albums/j58/bsowde/DIY/Tein_Basic/21.jpg

19) Reattach the brake line bracket and tighten 12mm bolt. Torque the other nuts/bolts as shown
http://i77.photobucket.com/albums/j58/bsowde/DIY/Tein_Basic/22.jpg

20) Now torque the 3 14mm upper mount nuts to 38ft/lbs. **If you did not torque the center nut to specification from step 15, now is the time to do that as well**
http://i77.photobucket.com/albums/j58/bsowde/DIY/Tein_Basic/23.jpg

21) Now its time to set the initial ride height of the Tein Basic coilovers. Tein recommends a value of 0.79in(20mm)
http://i77.photobucket.com/albums/j58/bsowde/DIY/Tein_Basic/24.jpg

22) To make this measurement, I use a 6in rule and a set of calipers, and make a mark at the recommended value on the 6in rule. You could probably also try to use a tape measure....but I guess I am way to picky for that...lol
http://i77.photobucket.com/albums/j58/bsowde/DIY/Tein_Basic/25.jpg

23) Where to measure from is shown in step 21(which is the installation manual that comes with coilovers), and you adjust the coilovers, using the wrenches that came with them, until you have the recommended value
http://i77.photobucket.com/albums/j58/bsowde/DIY/Tein_Basic/26.jpg

24) Once you have the ride height adjusted to the recommended value go ahead and tighten the top adjustment nut against the bottom lock nut, again using the wrenches that came with coilovers(Only turn the top adjustment nut, hold the bottom nut stationary)
http://i77.photobucket.com/albums/j58/bsowde/DIY/Tein_Basic/27.jpg

One front done!
http://i77.photobucket.com/albums/j58/bsowde/DIY/Tein_Basic/28.jpg

25) Now repeat steps 8-24 for the other front coilover.

26) Once that is done go ahead and put the front wheels back on
http://i77.photobucket.com/albums/j58/bsowde/DIY/Tein_Basic/29.jpg

27) Now lets turn our attention to the rears. First remove the interior panels and rear carpet to gain access to the rear shock mounting bolts.(I am not going to post how to remove all the panels and carpet I am sure you can find a DIY on that)
http://i77.photobucket.com/albums/j58/bsowde/DIY/Tein_Basic/30.jpg

28) Its much easier to get to the lower rear shock mounting bolt if you simply remove the rear sway bar link using the 14mm nut
http://i77.photobucket.com/albums/j58/bsowde/DIY/Tein_Basic/31.jpg

29) Loosen the 19mm lower shock nut(this picture shows the Tein already installed...I forgot to take a picture of this area before disassemble, but its the same bolt)
http://i77.photobucket.com/albums/j58/bsowde/DIY/Tein_Basic/32.jpg

30) To actually remove the bolt you will need to put pressure on the rear brake/control arm assembly
http://i77.photobucket.com/albums/j58/bsowde/DIY/Tein_Basic/33.jpg

31) Now remove the 3 14mm upper shock mounting bolts
http://i77.photobucket.com/albums/j58/bsowde/DIY/Tein_Basic/34.jpg

32) You can now remove the rear shock assembly(it will take a little bit of effort for this)
http://i77.photobucket.com/albums/j58/bsowde/DIY/Tein_Basic/35.jpg

33) Similar to the fronts the rears also use the factory upper mounts. **YOU WILL need a spring compressor for this** To remove the upper mounts first compress the spring using a spring compressor, and then remove the 19mm nut at the top
http://i77.photobucket.com/albums/j58/bsowde/DIY/Tein_Basic/36.jpg

34) Once the nut is removed you will need the following 4 pieces from the factory setup
http://i77.photobucket.com/albums/j58/bsowde/DIY/Tein_Basic/37.jpg

35) This picture shows the assembly order of the pieces for the Tein Basic rear coilover
http://i77.photobucket.com/albums/j58/bsowde/DIY/Tein_Basic/38.jpg

36) The next few pictures show the assembly of the rear coilover
http://i77.photobucket.com/albums/j58/bsowde/DIY/Tein_Basic/39.jpg
http://i77.photobucket.com/albums/j58/bsowde/DIY/Tein_Basic/40.jpg
http://i77.photobucket.com/albums/j58/bsowde/DIY/Tein_Basic/41.jpg
http://i77.photobucket.com/albums/j58/bsowde/DIY/Tein_Basic/42.jpg
http://i77.photobucket.com/albums/j58/bsowde/DIY/Tein_Basic/43.jpg

37) Install rear coilover into upper mount, and finger tighten the 3 14mm nuts
http://i77.photobucket.com/albums/j58/bsowde/DIY/Tein_Basic/45.jpg

38) Place the coilover into the lower mount and using a little bit of anti-seize insert the 19mm bolt in mounting hole
http://i77.photobucket.com/albums/j58/bsowde/DIY/Tein_Basic/32.jpg

39) Torque lower mounting bolt to 103ft/lbs
http://i77.photobucket.com/albums/j58/bsowde/DIY/Tein_Basic/47.jpg

40) Re-attach the rear sway bar link, and tighten the 14mm nut to 32ft/lbs

41) Now torque the 3 14mm upper mount nuts to 59ft/lbs
http://i77.photobucket.com/albums/j58/bsowde/DIY/Tein_Basic/49.jpg

42) The center nut now needs to be tightened, to do this the coilover rod has a profile cut into it so that you can use a 10mm wrench to hold the rod from spinning while you tighten the 17mm nut
http://i77.photobucket.com/albums/j58/bsowde/DIY/Tein_Basic/48.jpg

43) Its now time to set the initial ride height on the rear coilover. This is done the same as on the front, and is the same recommended value 0.79in(20mm)
http://i77.photobucket.com/albums/j58/bsowde/DIY/Tein_Basic/44.jpg

44) Repeat steps 28-43 for the other rear

45) Once both are done go ahead and install rear wheels, and all the interior pieces
http://i77.photobucket.com/albums/j58/bsowde/DIY/Tein_Basic/50.jpg
http://i77.photobucket.com/albums/j58/bsowde/DIY/Tein_Basic/51.jpg

Now sit back get a drink and admire your work...BUT....don't get comfortable....we are not done!

46) The Tein ride height values are a general starting point, we now need to tune them to get the right look, and feel. So remove the car from the jack stands...as you can see ours looked a little low
http://i77.photobucket.com/albums/j58/bsowde/DIY/Tein_Basic/52.jpg

47) Its now time to get out that pencil and paper and take measurements at all 4 corners. You will be measuring from the center of the wheel to the bottom of the fender, just as it shows in the Tein installation manual. Yes the picture shows a different tC...I again did not get any pictures of us measuring on Shane's car(the blue tC), so I just took a picture on mine
http://i77.photobucket.com/albums/j58/bsowde/DIY/Tein_Basic/measure.jpg

Our measurements were as follows:
LF 12 1/4
RF 12 3/4
LR 13 3/8
RR 13

After doing some evaluating we decided that 13 looked like a good setting.

48) So now its time to set all to 13, or whatever you decide on. To do this you will be jack up the car removing the wheel and then either raising or lowering the coilover, using the wrenches supplied by Tein. The picture below shows which way to turn the adjustment nut to either raise or lower the ride height. **Tein Basic's do not have damper adjustment so ride height is the only adjustment you will be making**
http://i77.photobucket.com/albums/j58/bsowde/DIY/Tein_Basic/ride_height.jpg

You are now done, I would recommend that after you drive around on these or any adjustable suspension that you recheck the heights again just to make sure after everything breaks in and settles that all four corners are again where you wanted them to be.

http://i77.photobucket.com/albums/j58/bsowde/DIY/Tein_Basic/53.jpg

http://i77.photobucket.com/albums/j58/bsowde/DIY/Tein_Basic/suspension99.jpg

http://i77.photobucket.com/albums/j58/bsowde/DIY/Tein_Basic/suspension105.jpg

http://i77.photobucket.com/albums/j58/bsowde/DIY/Tein_Basic/suspension93.jpg

http://i77.photobucket.com/albums/j58/bsowde/DIY/Tein_Basic/suspension119.jpg

http://i77.photobucket.com/albums/j58/bsowde/DIY/Tein_Basic/suspension120.jpg

http://i77.photobucket.com/albums/j58/bsowde/DIY/Tein_Basic/suspension121.jpg

and the big test....even made it out of my steep driveway, and no rubbing or scrapping!!

ok first off great write up. i only have one question. what do you do about the rear wheels, my friend lowered his car with tien coilovers also and he set it so low that the tires did not sit right...he ended up burning through his rear tires in an unatural amount of time. is there a fix for that or do you just need to get an enlighnment? thank you

what your friend should have done was taken the car for an Alignment, his toe/camber was off and thats why he was chewing threw his tires. the wheels sit right they just need to be aligned.

Awesome write up!!

If this had been around when I changed my stock shocks and springs to TRD shocks and springs I could have saved a couple hundred dollars. It seems like the installation is pretty much the same and pretty straight forward going by your guide.

Excellent job!! Deserves to be in the tech section.

For the most part, but they way K-sports are adjusted is different from the Tein's

Yes they do, I have the Tein SSP with pillow mounts & EDFC on my tC. The pillow mounts are the only way you can run that setup.

For me it was worth it, but I do a lot of AutoX, and will be doing Time Attack this year, so its nice to adjust on the fly. Yes the EDFC is used on the rears.

where do you get anti-seize? how much does it cost?

dqlostsoulz

You could get it at autozone or kragen. It cost anywhere from 3-5 bucks.

Domo
02-18-2009, 07:02 AM
^^thanks, so let me get this straight, am i putting the anti-seize in the hole where the 22mm strut bolt goes into? Or do I place it on the coilover where the rings that control the height are? The reason im confused is because if its on the coils, then i could do this earlier..right?

dqlostsoulz
02-18-2009, 07:10 AM
You can also put it on the bolts . I put a bit on the coilover rings because it will prevent it from seizing/rusting, plus it will make it easier to adjust the height or lower it in the future.

Do not put the anti-size on the threaded coilover area, the anti-seize is typically for bolts and fasteners were there is heat build up The anti-seize prevents the materials from corroding, and seizing together making it hard to disassemble.

Did you not read what I said? There are arrows conveniently placed ON the sideskirts that show you were to put them.

read your manual, it tells you where to place the jacks.

j3st3r..im guessing you dont know how much these coils settle over a three week period since you got them used right? Does anyone know how much they will drop after fully being settled? I think ima go with 13 all around for now.

Used?? Not sure how you came up with that, but mine were purchased new. As for the settling....not sure that I have really seen much of it even after racing on them.

oh sorry, maybe i got you and dr. isotope mixed up. Im have some trouble with the EDFC controller. I have no idea on how to get the wires and looms from the engine bay the the interior. Someone told me I would have to cut the passenger floor panel and reseal it but i dont wanna go that route. Also if anyone knows whether there is enough room for the rear motors?

I am running the EDFC on both front and rears. You dont have to cut any floor boards, and yes they do fit on the rear. There are a couple places you can run the wires through at. There are 2 factory wire looms that run through the firewall, one on the passenger side very close to the shock town, and one is on the drivers side.

The grommet behind the brake, is that the part you are talking about on the drivers side? And which option did you use for the front wiring?

I was the first to post. I used this guide to install my F&F type II coilovers yesterday (fronts) and today (rears). The fronts are super easy, the rears no so much but I got them in. Now the measuring comes tomorrow. Thanks again!

whats hard about the rear w/ F/F coilover? I think the hard part was just getting the stock coilover out

Thats what i was wondering.. Couldnt be the carpet and panels.. I ripped all that crap out in 10 minutes. Maybe the way they adjust or something?

Got these in with a friend no problem, everything is tight like the guide says, measurements are good, but every time i hit a bump going slow it's really clanky/loud and doesn't sound right, any ideas?

Update: When in doubt, recheck... turns out some stuff was in fact loose just didn't catch it. Awesome. Thanks again for the guide!

I realize this is an old thread but I noted that it stated that a spring compressor was not needed for the removal of the top hat. Is that really correct? I mean, I have a spring compressor but I have never seen a stock spring come off without one. Well, I have but it damn near shot the nut through a wall when the idiot did it.

Yes I am positive you do not need a spring compressor for the removal

torque spec for rear top suspension bolt. Not the three 14 mms which have to be adjusted to 59 ft/lbs but the single 17 mm bolt.

thanks

Ok I have raceland c/o's and I was directed to this DIY for install procedure. It all looks pretty cut and dry but I have a custom box for my audio set up where my spare used to be. Will that affect my instalation of the rear c/o's? If so what can I do without messing with my audio set up..? thanks to anyone who offers the tips and help!

Well you have to remove the rear interior panels so if you have audio equipment that is in the back area you will have to either move it out of the way, or remove it temporarily to do the install

Can't you just pull out your box or whatever you have in there to do the install... it shouldn't be too hard?

Honestly cant say for sure, as I have not had much experience with any of the other coilovers out there. Also the use of the stock parts on the Teins does not apply to the SS-P model
