I received this e-mail from Meetup.com:

Dear Meetup Member,

The Organizer of Pacific Northwest Scion Events stepped down
without nominating a successor. If no one steps up as
organizer by January 27, 2009, this Meetup Group will disappear
forever. You can keep this Meetup Group of 250 Car Enthusiasts
together by taking over as Organizer.

It's a real & rewarding responsibility, and Meetup will help
you each step of the way.

As Organizer, you'll get special access to tools specifically
designed for managing and growing a local OFFLINE community
group. Thousands of people take great pride in being a Meetup
Group Organizer because they're helping others connect and
create community.

While Organizers are responsible for paying a monthly Meetup
Fee, many Meetup Groups share the cost among their members -
this often breaks down to a few dollars per member.

Plus there's a 30-day money back guarantee. Step up today and
if you are not satisfied with the Meetup service, we'll give
you a full refund.

To step up go to:
http://scion.meetup.com/30/handover/?ic=en2&op=c

We hope you'll keep Pacific Northwest Scion Events going for
all the current and future Meetup members out there.

Best regards,
The Team at Meetup HQ

I don't know where that leaves us, but we apparently have a limited time to figure out what we plan to do since the original organizer did not feel the need to get a successor.

If anyone has any good ideas, post 'em up here.

If no one cares, we will lose the meetup notices, site, calanders, etc.

We have just over two weeks.

Think fast.

Tom

I see that not only was it abandoned, but all future events on the calander are being shown as "cancelled."

http://scion.meetup.com/30/calendar/

Right now the PNW Scion group at MeetUp has 249 members and has tracked 306 events since May of 2006.

(No, I do not know the cost.)

wow someone was paying for that?
interesting!!!

Tomas

OK, Found the costs...

1. Does Meetup cost any money?

Nope. It's free to create a Meetup account, find Meetup Groups you want to join, and be a Meetup member. Sweet, right?

You only have to purchase a subscription if you wish to start a Meetup Group and be a Meetup Organizer. There are three subscriptions to choose from:

*

$12 a month for 6 months (a single $72 charge)
*

$15 a month for 3 months (a single $45 charge)
*

$19 a month

Each subscription renews automatically and has a 30-day money back guarantee from the date of your initial purchase. Purchasing a subscription entitles you to run up to three Meetup Groups.

Please note: All prices are in USD.

Yes, Mo & I have been paying the cost since starting this meetup in May of 2006. We have been paying anywhere from $144 - 228 per year to keep it going (that is in addition to event location costs, websites, hosting, flyer printing, sticker printing, helping out friends, etc).

We have been spending thousands of dollars amongst everything each year and this has become a very expensive hobby for us. At this time we felt it was best to focus our endeavors and energies on family and raising our little one who is just about to turn one and is now walking.

There was no way to appoint a successor without a charge. At this time I'm at a loss to know of anyone willing to pay this expense. If someone wants to stand up and pay it, then feel free but we can't justify paying for the service any more.

When a new organizer steps up then the events will "reopen". They are just in a "freeze period" until then.

;) no more worrying guys it will still be up for at least half more year

Tomas

May I remind everyone that it is also possible to have multiple "assistant organizer" types so the workload is shared and each could be responsible for maybe a specific area...

(I'm wondering if someone with a friendly 'connection' in the Scion Corp regional ranks might be able to get Scion Regional to pop for the cost of the MeetUp group - after all we ARE supporting Scion rather directly with this...)

Thanks for saving the meet up calendar David! YOU ROCK! We will definitely have to talk at the M&G about helping with costs!

Business cards and post cards are free with just the cost of shipping at Vistaprint.com. I would be willing to help out with cost myself and I am sure others would too. We could have someone in charge of the north and the south.....and we should mention scionlife on there somewhere...perhaps the back?

Cindy and I still have a huge box of the Team Ascension 4x6 flyers. We also still have over 35 Team Ascension Vinyls for the windows,Cindy purchased them last year and has not sold them all, think she had over 100 printed up at her expense.Waiting on CArl to decide if he wants them,if not they are going for $35 shipped.....we will jsut take the loss on them as they cost us $3 each to get printed.

There are still lots of TA members out there guys.Cindy alone recruited over 30 people this year. This is a great opportunity for new members and veteran members to step up and get a chance to lead.

Remember Cindy and I took our positions on the team after jsut a few months on the team.
