I'm looking to buy a new exhaust system for my XB and i was hoping that someone could help me out with their experience on their exhausts!
I'm looking for something that looks good, fits the stock location, gives me a little more hp, and most of all does not make a lot of noise!! I can't stand that loud wasp sound that comes out of some of these cars that are running around..
Thanks for your help!!

I've got the www.Precisionmuffler.com axleback for the Auto xB. Looks good, sounds good, don't know about power gains but it was priced better than almost all the xB axlebacks I've seen. It's built with a Magnaflow so quality is there too...

I've been pretty satisfied with the TRD exhaust. Its not too loud and pretty cool

I've heard several exhausts available, and IMO the Flowmaster is the best sounding axle-back exhaust.........even better than the Magnaflow cat-back. I know, it's surprising, but others I know agree.

You're not really going to notice a gain in hp from anything though.

will you need a header for the complete setup? or so thats what i was told my unamed sources.

no, CAT BACK means CAT BACK not MANIFOLD BACK. so you don't need a header for a CAT back

Id go with a custm setup. it gives you a mass multitude of tip options and u can make it loud or quiet. custom is the cheapest / best way to go.

Id go with a custm setup. it gives you a mass multitude of tip options and u can make it loud or quiet. custom is the cheapest / best way to go.

custom is not the best way to go unless you have a dyno set up to test all possible options. if you buy a manufactured exhaust then they have dyno tested it and you know what to expect. most of the time you lose horsepower with a custom setup.

hotbox05
01-04-2005, 08:43 PM
i' will never believe that. only if u were to go too big. any system that still retain the stock resonator is dumb who cares if past the axle is 2.25 inch if the exhaust between the end of the resonator and the axle connection is 1.75 inch? i know alotta people run too big of piping and hurt perfomance. i ran 2 inch from cat back with a 2 inch glasspack as my resonator. and then 2.0 inch from there to my muffler. i guess i need to dyno now . too badi i'd have to take my header and intake off to do so lol. but i can guarantee you that my setup produces more hp than almost all axle backs.

only way to know is to dyno.

hotbox05
01-04-2005, 10:05 PM
well if i was marketing them then i would but i'm not all i know is what is your theory as to how it's worse? ever notice how race cars have custom exhausts? i dont wanna fight i just wanna get why u think this is all. if someone paid me to cover the dyno costs and like 10 or 20 bucks for my time i would do it and see.

The brandname exhaust companies don't post the dyno on their website either, just sound clips, not even the sound level. They always say "dyno proven" but I never see their dynos. They have the technology but they hardly compare their product with the others. It is difficult to find the right exhuast for me. If anyone can provide some dyno info on exhuasts, I would be appreciated.

01-05-2005, 12:49 AM
usually the axle backs only give about 2HP+ ,it also depends if you have a header or intake. The axle back helps with HP but alone your really only gettin a 2hp gain.

Honestly...arguing over a possible 5 hp gain, if any at all gained is stupid! Seriously, the stock muffler uses what 1.75 inch piping? So if you want to gain HP go with slightly larger piping and keep the cat and resonator. If you want torque just get rid of the resonator and get any damn exhaust you like, while keeping the smaller piping. Most high end cars will not gain torque with huge pipes, there MIGHT be some hp gained. They just market "free flowing" exhausts because thats what the demand is for, even though it isn't the best in terms of performance.

My point....get whatever you like.

axleback with muffler installed $70...I don't care who you are or how good your quality is...that is the price you should pay for an axleback cuz they'll all do the same thing...make 1whp coupled with headers and intake.

I have a custom welded one also, and my tip has only 3/16" gap from the rear lip. My set-up doesn't move at all. And its 2.25 inch from the resonator back.

I did go with Magnaflow, but varied from having a canister as I needed clearance and had it mounted as high up as I could go. The frame rails hang lower than my exhaust.

Thanks to Ken at Michael's Mufflers located at Bascom and Stevens Creek in San Jose.
