Default Nissan GT-R SpecV Something wicked this way...isn't coming.

As much as it pains us to begin a story with bad news, we're sad to report that the new Nissan GT-R SpecV won't be headed to our shores in 2009. The company, now headquartered in Yokohama, Japan, recently unveiled the car to the Japanese public, saying that it will go on sale there on February 2. The price for this machine: 15,750,000 yen or $175,419 (using the exchange rate at the time of writing). It's a pretty steep asking price in these financially challenging times — almost twice the price of a base GT-R.

As for what makes the SpecV special, the most obvious difference between it and the base GT-R is that it's a 2-seater. To save weight, Nissan ripped out the rear seats, converting that space into a luggage compartment. Exterior enhancements for the SpecV include a rear spoiler, grille and brake ducts, all made of carbon-fiber. The car comes only in one color, Ultimate Black Opal. Inside, there are special Recaro carbon-fiber bucket seats and trim almost everywhere you look.

Under the hood, the SpecV has what Nissan calls a "High Gear Boost Control Device," which momentarily increases turbo boost for "greater torque in the intermediate-to-high speed range to provide a more powerful feeling of acceleration, while allowing the engine to operate at a lower speed for improved fuel economy." This means that the engine output remains roughly the same, at 480 bhp, but the car should be quicker thanks to more torque (we hear 470 lb.-ft.) that peaks from 3200 to 5500 rpm. Other modifications include a titanium-coated exhaust system and carbon-ceramic brakes (a set of these is rumored to run $50,000). The performance of the SpecV will be measured at the Nürburgring, where Nissan is aiming to break 7 minutes 20 seconds around the 12.9-mile track, making it a natural competitor to the Porsche 911 GT2.

The GT-R SpecV will be sold through only seven dealerships in Japan. Whether the car will make it to U.S. dealerships in 2010 or 2011 has yet to be decided.
