So my auto shop tells me that my crank split in half and that I need a new motor but they also said if i can find a crankshaft I might be able to use it.... Does anyone know a DIY for it or a DIY or taking out a motor also where can I get a crankshaft!!! HELP!!! please and thank you :doh: :pray:

I hydrolocked a previous vehicle of mine (Jetta), and the crank was only off by 7/16ths, or so the mechanic who I trust, says..

You're looking at pretty much the most complicated procedure possible, when it comes to repair. If you don't want to fork out the $3k+ that it'll take for a shop to do it, it'll cost you that much in tools just to have the ability to do it yourself.

I would highly consider warranty options, insurance if you have it, and ways of acquiring a new vehicle, if possible. OR, find guys who really know what they're doing, and hopefully bribe them to help you for cheap.

x2 how the hell did you snap the crank??? As for fixing this - if the block is ok - one of the guys from dezod had a crank laying around hed prolly sell you for a good price :) As for the motor work - removing the motor can easily be done yourself as long as you have a hoist and most normal shop tools. For a normal person itll take 8-10 hrs to pull the motor. Thatll save you quite a bit in labor - once you pull it and take the motor to a machine shop theyll probably quote between 500-600 in labor to tear it down and install the new crank/bearings/do any machine work needed. So all in all you could get out of thise for the 500-600 in labor, the price of a crank, and renting a hoist :) But why youre in there why not get forged internals and build her right ;) Hey you were gunna spend 1500-2000 for someone to do it anyways - may as well still spend the extra cash on good internals :D hehe but thats just me ;)

Yeah i understand that i have every shop tool and lift needed i just want to do it myself so i dont have to cut my balls off by having someone else do it anyway of find the crank though? I will most likly do some internal work as well ;)

You can break a crank. It has happened to me on a previous vehicle. In that case, the oil fed timing chain tensioner broke, allowing the chain to slap, and the crank cracked completely in two. Chances are it was the vibrations it suddenly set up that did it in. Pulled the motor and tore it down.. which was a pretty sight :P This happened while running 80 mph down the highway, not racing, not beating on it. So it is possible. Of course, this was on a high mileage engine and that is an extreme example.

Heres a basic rundown of what youll need but might forget ;) Plenty of FIPG for crankcase reinforcing assy seal, oil pan seal, and timing chain cover seal. Front crank oil seal and rear main oil seal. Moly assy lube. 12 Point internal wrench tool to remove head bolts - its the 12mm one. hmm not really anything else other than normal tools such as torque wrench, plastiguage to measure oil clearances, feeler gauges to check valve clearances, piston ring end gaps, etc, bore micrometer to check bore, and i caliper micrometer to make other various small measurements.
