How Safe is the Scion?
recently i was in a car crash in my mercedes 190e, i was rearended (she was doing 45-50) while stopped on the freeway which consequently hit me hard enough to push me into the car infront of me and crushed my car on both sides. i think i will definately get enough money for my car where i can easily get a scion with maybe a year of payments, but now i am just a little sketched out about the safety of cars, my car was very strong and had very good crumple zones. can anyone out there help rest my mind on the safety of scions?
here are some pictures of my car

anyway, ive always loved the scions, and would love to pick one up, just want to feel safe
oh, and the last picture, she hit me so hard that my entire headunit with ipod setup flew into the backseat

So far, there have been zero reported fatality accidents with Scions, which says more about its safety than I can. www.wreckedscions.com has some pics you might be interested in.
Official crash data from the NHTSA is pretty sketchy for new cars. The insurance companies might have better info. Maybe get an insurance quote, if (relative to the sticker price) its less or more than the mercedes, that should give you an idea of how safe the insurance company thinks it is. F'rinstance, if the mercedes was a $30,000 car and insurance was $100 a month, and the scion is $15,000 then its insurance should be $50. If the scion is more than $50 (in this example) you'd know that its judged to be less safe.
Of course, insurance companies are also judging theft claims and other kinds of loss, but its better than nothing...

ya i was just gonna suggest check out my site. most accidents so far with scion xB's have been rear endings, mine included.
in the tC secion someone ripped one in half in a accident and still survived.
i dont have much xA crash photos because they havent crashed as much as the xB's or tC's

One thing that some insurance companies have is a point system, from what I understand. I think State Farm or Allstate uses it. It's a basic underlying perspective, so (like mfbenson said) if proportionally the Mercedes insurance was equal or more expensive than the Scion's quote, it may be safer (or less prone to being stolen).
But I agree Toast3r.. the logic is a little fuzzy. But then again, aren't insurance companies supposed to confuse the hell out of us anyway!?

...there's a lot more that goes into figuring out how much insurance will cost then just the value of the car.
"So by your logic my insurane should cost me about $1/month because the car I drive only cost me $500?
...there's a lot more that goes into figuring out how much insurance will cost then just the value of the car."
It only works for new cars from the same model year. There is a floor to what the premium will be because no matter if you drive a clunker or not you can still cause an accident where you hit a ferrarri or whatever that will be a liability up to your coverage limit.
I was leaving out as many factors as I could to make it simple.
Cars with higher claims history tend to be the same ones that are less safe, and the higher the claims history typically the higher the premium. Its not perfect but it is a piece of information, that can be combined with other information, to make a judgment about its safety.

from looking at the pictures, it looks like a lot of the rearended xb's have their rear windows blown out as well. does anyone know if the rearseat passengers are at a more substantial risk of injury if this were to occur?
A drunk hit me in my first xb and i went into the ditch and rolled several times.. sadly i went unconscious (sp) and dont remember much but i only saw the insruance pics of it and it held up well.. I was not really hurt just the shock of the hit i guess knocked me out..
**edit** this was an 04 camo green xb..

The xB doesn't have much crush space back there for the rear seat passengers, but that's the sacrifice that has to be made to keep the vehicle short and the cabin large.
None of the rear impact photos show intrusion into the rear seat area.

Naw Ive got pics on my computer at home of my first box but none of the crash.. I went straight to the hospital and the only pics i saw where the ones the insruance took.. I didnt have anything in the vehicle worth saving so it all got towed away
I really didnt feel like looking at it in person..
yup i was really suprised when i saw the pics.. couple of the windows busted out the roof was crushed in a bit but overall i was really suprised how well the cabin stayed in tact while the blunt of the force the outside took
