View Full Version : If your Boss...
Davie06TC 01-30-2009, 08:55 AM If your Boss pays you a bonus of $250, yet pays everyone else "atleast" $500, and sometimes these people do less, make less money for the company etc...what should you do?
Shall i bring it up? Shall i let it slide and thank God that i have work right now and ANY bonus is a good one...
I feel like im been taken advantage of, yet im happy to be in work right now. Im very confused of what to do next, so i look to the Scion crowd :)
TRDxD 01-30-2009, 09:02 AM mmm definitely a tough decision. unfortunately, since you're not technically supposed to discuss how much you've made on your bonus, I think you'd be better off not bringing it up. however, maybe you can wait about a week or so, and discuss with your boss how you feel taken advantage of sometimes. don't bring up the fact that others got double your bonus, but let him know that you work hard, and that 250, while very much appreciated, isn't quite what you were expecting for your hard work.
hope it helped!
willlangford 01-30-2009, 09:35 AM Look at the economy.. look that you have a job. i wouldnt say anything.
M2-Motoring 01-30-2009, 10:36 AM i agree with will. just take what u get for now and be happy you have a job. if economy was booming, then thats a different story. also u gotta look at it this way. you already overall make more than the others =)
M2-Motoring 01-30-2009, 10:38 AM oh here's another thing. in the position you are in, does your boss give u more slack than others? at my gf's job, shes given soo much slack cause she works hard. the pay is the same but the boss let her take days off when she wants/needs and comes in late whenver she wants with no bad marks. do you get perks others dont? if you do then let it go =)
TRDxD 01-30-2009, 11:00 AM i agree with that....if youre getting perks, then that makes up for the lack of bonus.
bbszero 01-30-2009, 12:43 PM Look at the economy.. look that you have a job. i wouldnt say anything.
Definately! But..... I'd jack 250.00 worth of paperclips, staples, and post-it notes, just to make myself feel better!
Kanchi 01-30-2009, 01:34 PM we got our organizational bouns cut this year....so $250 is deff. better than nothing.
sdsnybny 01-30-2009, 02:07 PM My performance bonus was less than half this year, sucks but I have job security that's priceless.
its_ikon 01-30-2009, 02:30 PM i would let it slide for now if you get paid more. even though people shouldn't talk about what they make, some companies don't have those rules or people already know what the position pays. when it comes time for a raise, hold out for more at that time. another option is to ask how your performance has been and is there anything you can improve on to gauge what they might be thinking.
gofastC 01-30-2009, 02:40 PM Wait a sec....there are companies in Portland that still pay bonuses???....take the previous advice, when it comes to for a review or up for a pay increase show your boss that you deserve more and have an explanation ready if he challenges you.

kkawana 01-30-2009, 03:18 PM whoa... 30min delay double post
BZinn1 01-30-2009, 03:22 PM Be very carefull discussing other peoples pay at work........it is grounds in many companies to be fired for........it is a confidential item at work.......now a good way to aproach it is ask them if you were supposed to only receive what you got as maybee last year it was more........it oculd be others have more time on the books and got more.
But all in all be happy to have a job and work hard and tahnk your employer for giving a bonus.........we got none this year.
ProjectGreen 01-30-2009, 05:34 PM Take it and be happy you have a job. Talk with your boss in a few weeks about how hard you work and that you think you deserve more. Bring in reasons supporting this, IE ... Finding ways to save the company money, maybe eliminating the yearly bonus. LOL JP
But have some good reasons on hand on why you deserve more.
AvonLadyJenn 01-30-2009, 05:48 PM Been there with this one. Most bosses would be upset if you come to them saying you should have gotten as much as so and so. One job I had I got the same bonus as the girl that was hired 2 months before the "holiday bonus" and I had been there 2 years....I had the highest case load in the office and about 10 different job titles...she was just a receptionist....I was LIVID....but didn't bring it up to the big boss because really we weren't suppose to discuss that stuff...I knew I deserved more....but then when I started there were only 2 "employees" at the company...the big bosses my office manager and me....so I have a feeling was just getting the "employee" bonus...not the management or higher bonus...I think it was just based on level or something.
So I wouldn't say anything...Oregon is a no fault state....you could be let go for "no" reason.....be glad to have a job....I know many have already said that...but really....at this point anyone with a job is lucky....this economy really sucks.
robbiej 01-30-2009, 06:18 PM Feel lucky, I've been on the same job for almost 30yrs and never gotten a bonus.
BZinn1 01-30-2009, 06:46 PM I got to have a meeting with the guy in charge of my boss yesturday.......the word from corporate is they are very happy with the work me and my team are doing to reduce energy and that our region is leading the nation and that we get to keep our jobs for another year........but that we would not get bonus and probably raises will be cut out for the year,we also lost company matching on our 401k till further notice.......but we stay employeed........ :relief:
Infamous425 01-30-2009, 09:35 PM i would bring it up but only if you've kept records of all the work you've done so you can better make your case
dugzilla 01-30-2009, 10:50 PM Say thank you. You don't know why others got more than you, just be thankful you aren't getting laid off these days.
Adorian 01-31-2009, 12:21 AM Say thank you. You don't know why others got more than you, just be thankful you aren't getting laid off these days.
x2
I got no bonus at all this year.
ShinyNewPennyXb 01-31-2009, 12:30 AM yeah go with what a couple of these guys are saying and find out the reasoning. at my company your review is party of the bonus so it gives targets and "potential" bonus and what you actually get out of it. liek say 86% scoring is 86% of your bonus. if it was higher last year just ask if theres anything they arent happy with or if its the company not doing as well. since you know they got higher bonuses you can use whatever he tells you to your advantage and u'll know if hes giving a BS answer.
DO NOT I REPEAT DO NOT bring up other coworkers as it will come off as ungrateful possibly and such.
and just be happy you got something. i was underpaid when i got hired for my job. i have a diploma from a trade school and i was hired with the intention i would get a raise after my 90 day review of a few more bucks and in the last 2 years ive been here i havent seen a raise or a bonus. so just be happy!
Nick_Hollywood 01-31-2009, 01:12 AM It's been my experience that people get paid what their worth, no more no less. Of course it depends on your industry and youretime with the company but If you don't act like you're important than you're just not.
Things are a little bit harder with the current recession because normally if you're qaulified you should always be looking to advance and have new/different opportunities available to you.
A good way to approach your boss about more money is asking not for a raise now, but ask when you can expect one if you maintain and even exceed your current work capacity. Sometimes asking for more money at the moment sends a bad vibe but there's nothing wrong with asking about a projected raise. Let him know you enjoy your job and you want to continue your commitment and loyalty to the company.
n short, you get paid what you're worth because you have to take it upon yourself to ensure you're getting treated fairly. Usually you can increase your worth by seeking out more education and never being content with what you're getting. If you work twice as hard as someone else, begin to work 4 times harder than them.
BZinn1 01-31-2009, 02:50 AM that is a great way to be proactive about asking for a raise or perfomance feedback.......it shows you have an interest in the company other than just making money......I for one am underpaid for my job by about $5 an hour to meet industry average.....but I do get to make my own hours and schedule........the day is done when I choose, vacations when I want......so I have never left......it is a dream job at times.....then again at times it is hell.
