OK, I did a search and I see this has come up more than a few times.

I've had this happen maybe 5-7 times so far. Grinding badly when shifting 1st to 2nd. My car has about 1800 miles and I've been driving stick for years so I don't think it's bad driver input.

Should I take it to the dealer and see if anything can be done under warrenty? Any other thoughts?

get a short throw shifter or a weighted shift knob

I think the lack of weight in the shift knob may be the problem, as I've had the same issues and it's been random. Usually it's when I'm more relaxed, so I'm being lazier.

The other issue I have is with how hard it can be to downshift from 5th to 4th, but that has a lot to do with the relatively weak return springs on the shifter (I think they're springs) that make it slow to go back to center. I've hunted for 4th on several occasions, accidentally bumping into the reverse gear in the process. It's gotten better now that I've gotten more used to this shifter. I'm used to driving a Miata, and it's shifter has consistently been praised by auto magazines as one of the finest around. The Scion's reminds me of the shifter on my old '91 Toyota Truck.

Ditto. This shifter feels like a truck shifter to me, but I haven't had any problems with grinding... maybe you just need to get used to this transmission.

I think that's it. I'm not having the same issues I had in the beginning. I've been driving a manual tranny for 20 years, have driven *many* cars, and never had the issues I've had with this one, and that includes my early learning experiences in the '80s. :?

if i forget to push in the clutch the same thing happens to me

okay i only did that once though. i have found it sometimes hard to hit third. i think its driver error with me though. i would take it in and try to explain it and get it at least reported incase it goes out later!

I didn't have any problems until I put big rubber floor mats in. Mine is definetly driver error. I just can't push the clutch peddle down as far as before.

I had the same issue with the all-weather mats I had to take them out
