Default Help me spend this money/Build a Turbo kit

Hey Guys,

Im new here as a member, ive browsed this forum for over 6 months but never really bothered to join. Now that I got my tax return back i wanna boost my TC if its possible with the money I have. Basiclly I have a 2008 TC with 16k miles. No Mods to it as of yet. What i would basiclly like to do is turbo this thing as the cheapest price possible. Ive done alot of reading these past few months and researched alot of things. I used to own a Sr-20DEt S-13 but i bought that from someone so i never knew how these thigns worked. I just know i love driving turbo'd cars.

So here is it. I have a $4000 Budget. I talked to a performance shop here in at Atlanta and i was strongly advised against buying used turbos. i was told if i were to get anything used just the exhaust and nothing else.

I have strongly looked into the Dezod S1 Kit and i talked to a rep over the phone for a while and he explained to me what i would need. The problem is I wont be installing this myself and with the price of the kit, a new clutch gauages and exaust, i am about 1000 over my budget already.

Can you guys help me research and/or point me in the direction of parts, that i can buy to come in at a cheaper price?

I willing to invest more money into this later down the line of course and im not expecting a 400hp car for $4000 but i would like something to get me started so i can enjoy the ride while i save up to get there.

Id like to make anywhere from 250-300hp with my budget. Is this possible? unrealistic? if so someone let me know. I dont know all that much about the technical stuff with these things but im willing to soak in info as it comes.

From what Ive researched, the parts ill need are as follows. I would prefer to take my time and get parts individually with your help if it comes out cheaper.

Components:
-Turbo
-Turbo Manifold
-Wastegate
-Charge Piping
-Downpipe
-Blow Off Valve
-injectors
-Oil Feed Lines
-Oil Return Pan System
-Front Mount Intercooler
-T-Bolts & Couplers
-Fuel Management

If i missed something let me know and give me your input. Thanks alot in advance.

-D

you dont really need a new clutch...theres someone on here pushing 330 on a stock clutch i believe.....to me used turbos are fine as long as theres minimal shaft play and the seals are still good...used manifolds are fine as long as there are no cracks.....used engine management is fine also.....only thing i wouldnt buy used would be.....uh....sparkplugs? haha

With purchasing a kit, you are guaranteed to have pieces fit, if you get stuck or need support, we are here for you and all pieces come new with a warranty. THAT is what you are paying for.

Don't boost on a budget!

Of course you may be able to piece together parts and such on your own, but is it worth using a used turbo or manifold when they fail and you have no one to blame but yourself without a warranty?

Thanks for the responses so far.

Its so funny to me and it always seems to happen....No matter what i want, it be car aprts or electronics, i always have just right under the amount of money i need. Its like i get 4,000 bucks and i go looking for something that costs around $4000 bucks, lol the Dezod kit in this case.

do not BOOST on budget. just be paitent and look around. if you want to boost on budget u should buy a good used kit with everything included and upgrade the turbo and wastegate. and the fuel injectors. an turboback exhaust. but thats just me. dont flame me.

Thats some good advice and probably the stuff i need to hear. What are the drawbacks of buying a complete used kit? Like i mentioned i have only heard 1 opinion on this, a dude at a tuning shop advised me to not buy a used kit. But if i can get away with spending 3k now on a used one and upgrading later then that's fine.

I also heard someone say if i buy a turbo, get one with little shaftplay. How can you tell something like that? Just take someones word for it?

Also would it be beneficial to buy a kit and spend like 600 on a new turbo, is that almost like having a new kit? Are there parts in turbo kits that have to be replaced more than others do?

Great advice, this is potentially something that can save me money in the long runb ecause the new clutch is gonna add like $400 to the price tag. ANYTHING i can hold off til later down the road then id rather do

you should be able to get exhaust, clutch, used turbo kit, gauges installed and tuned for $4000 if you install pretty much everything yourself. But you will need some extra money to pay for any parts that might break/new motor/etc... You just never know what you might need so I would try to keep and extra couple thousand on the side. $4000 is about the very cheapest you can get away with it but definitely don't by cheap parts. Be patient and wait for some deals. Especially now you should be able to scoop up some parts fairly cheap because its a recession and not many people have $4000 to burn and many others need money so they will be flipping parts to get that cash... And the most important part is make sure you have a good tuner and definitely don't skimp on that..

used kit- 2500
exhaust- 500
clutch- 250
misc (gauges, etc)- 500
tune-250

As you can see there is not much room to waste money anywhere. If you really want you can save some money by piecing together a kit but it will take a while longer, it might not bolt up, etc..

the only reason shops tell you not to buy used kits is becasue they dont want to deal with used kits. they like to have everything fresh becuase sometimes the seller might miss some parts, thats pretty much the downfalls of buying a used kits are effed up turbos and missing parts. but for me i bought a used sc kit but somemissing parts but everythign worked out with me and the seller on the missing parts. so if you buy a used kit make sure everything is there and use PAYPAL!

Mr. OP, you seem like a reasonable guy. You say you've done research, but then you say things like "cheap" and "I'd rather do later" which I can understand if you were talking about something other than turboing your car.

Do it right, or do it twice.

Doing it right =

Why not just wait until you have some more money saved up? You've been this long without turbo, it won't hurt to go without it for sometime in the future.
