Perhaps this was already mentioned, but I don't come on here everyday.
A few weeks after getting my xA RS 1.0, I noticed that the gauge isn't split up into traditional 1/4 segments. 1/4, 1/2, 3/4, FULL
It wasn't until today that I realized that there are actually TEN segments total. 5 for the first half tank, 5 for the second half.
And how about this, we have an 11 gallon tank! Now usually these gas tanks aren't perfectly square so each segment on the gauge isn't all that acurate, but it should be pretty safe to assume that each segment is about 1 Gallon or ~30-35miles.
Knowing that, you should be able to easily figure out how many more miles you have left on your tank simply by looking at the gas tank and how many segments are left! I think it's great that Scion did this instead of the traditional 1/4 segments!

hey, I ran my xb until the light came on a few days ago. It seems like there is about 1.5-2.5 gallons left after the light comes on. your results may vary. :)

while i was on my origional tank of gas from the dealership, the gas light turned on 5 cities away from home. drove all the way back to a gas station not too far from my home (with who knows how many more ulcers) and put in $30. the bugger only took 22 bucks of 91 gas. little over 9 gallons..... with a 13 gallon tank??? the light turns on when the gas tank is really only a quarter tank away from empty???? hmmmmm design flaw? or am i just the only one to notice this?

Each car is different. The light is not calibrated the same on every car.

another thing about the gas gauge is that the reading is incorrect if read from the driver's seat. gauges are meant to be read from the direction it faces, and since the xa/xb's gauges are offset to the side, the needle shows that the car has more gas than it really has.
try it. check how much gas you have from the driver's seat, and then read the guage again while leaning towards the passenger seat.

thats what i did :? it was on the E by the time i got to the gas station, but even then that was about the low gas warning light. which came on at technically around a third tank to go

I'll quote myself,
Now usually these gas tanks aren't perfectly square so each segment on the gauge isn't all that acurate,
UndyingVisage58, you sound like this is your first car or something. The gas tank gauges for cars are never as accurate as the gauge shows, and you'll almost never find a car that actually goes empty the instant it hits empty. Car manufacturers do that for our own protection. Plus, it's not really a good thing to use up the last 10-5% of gas, as it's usually dirtiest.
For my car also, the light goes on around 9 gallons. The most I've gone w/o filling was 9.8 gallons. At that time, I thought for sure I would have filled 10 1/2 gallons. I/m glad I didn't.
Another downside to running low on gas, under high G turns, you can starve the engine. I've done it before in my Z with only a 1/4-1/8 tank (~18gallon tank). Although it was at an autox, my point being it can be done, and can very likely be done just as easily going down, or up a hill with only 1 gallon or less.
(btw, I just checked, and our xAs have a 11.9gal tank, not 11 like I first suspected, or 13 that UndyingVisage58 mentioned, therefore at 9 gallons consumed, we've technically still have 1/4 tank left when ~when the light goes on.)

The gauges should be angles "A la Echo"

Does the fuel filter stop working when the light comes on? ;) I drive my cars well into the empty zone, never had a problem with 'dirty gas'. Your results may vary of course. For what it's worth, I've read that fuel pumps can get effed-up if you repeatedly run out of gas. Something about the gasoline cooling the pump. Cheers.

here is another reading tip:
when your light comes on, you need to get gas.

well here's something funny....I like to squeeze the most out of muh' car...and like you all say they are each calibrated differently, but when muh' gas light comes on the needle isn't on the "e". Usually when i filled up muh' tank when the needle was on "e" i put 10.5 gallons of gas in ...the most and i supposedly have an 11.9 gallon tank?.....Now when the needle hits the "e" i assume their is about a gallon or 2 left when the gas light comes on as it approaches the "e". So even though i have only gotten 30-37 mpg on the car....i just assumes 2 gallons x 35mpg= 70 miles to go.... I once squeezed 80 miles out of it....and to muh' amazement as i rolled into the gas station and filled up...11.6 gallons...YAY....i hope muh' ramblin' didn't bore you all, but that's muh' view on it :)
