Default Rotors

Not sure which board to put this on but I'm just curious if anybody's machined their rotors. Anybody know how thin the rotor should be before I should just get new ones?

Depending on how much the machining is costing you, you may want to look into just getting some new rotors.

they will "mic" the rotors ......in other words they should check the thickness before they cut to ensure cutting is an option. You should get 2-3 cuts on the life of a rotor. I think I paid $20 or so for all 4 of mine at Pep Boys.

Ya, if you can get them all done for $20, go for it. That doesn't seem bad.

Any reason they're being done in the first place though? What's wrong with them?

I'm at about 62,000 miles and still have the original rotors and brake pads. My brake light on my dash has been flashing when I start moving from a stop. So I'm looking into options. I have been told to look into machining them however I know each rotor for specific cars is different so not sure how thin is too thin.

If your brake light is coming on, your pads are likely low. Rotors are probably fine. This is common when the pads are low because then there is more fluid in the line to compensate for the thinner pads - which means there is less fluid in the reservoir - which turns on your light when it sloshes around when starting off.

I've been reading that but I figured I'd either machine or replace my rotors to go along with the new brake pads.

wow, i knew i read the thread and didnt see any mileage and then i took a look at the time stamp

ack154 is right on the money.

go to auto zone and pick up a new set. they are not very expensive at all. dont know how mechanically inclined you are but its a simple install.

Ditto. Unless you can see any visual issues with the rotor, I wouldn't bother replacing.

just run your finger across the rotor and if you feel deep scratches you will need to get them machined but if its pretty much smooth, then all you need is new pads.

i went with axxis and got nothing but brake dust but they do bite

please don't listen to these people buying poor quality parts from the likes of autozone, sheesh. That's like getting suspension work done at walmart! hahaha.. yeah not a good idea.

Either stick with the oem pads or you can upgrade to something like Porterfield's R4-S pad, it's a performance carbon/kevlar pad. amazing. Can get them from http://www.porterfield-brakes.com/
But don't go to autozone, really bad parts. If you want oem either your dealer or trdsparks.com can help you. Sparks is a toyota dealer with lower prices online.

As far as machining the rotors, at 62,000 miles, i'd check the thickness of the rotors. It might not be worth it to machine them since the rotors might already be worn down enough. Might be worth it just to get to rotors. Brembo makes some excellent OEM rotors you can find them at the Tirerack.com and they're not high priced at all, great quality.

I'm getting some custom work done with my rotors on Friday. I'll post up some pics and explain (to the best of my ability) what was done.
