Default DRL mod

Had this idea for my 09.

Maybe put a Daytime Running Light kit on some yellow high beams on a switch. (for very foul weather)

Anybody done this?

lol

Yellow lights are common. Often times, they are called "Fog lights". You may have heard the term before. "Fog lights" are useful because the yellow color cuts through dense fog and illuminates the road better than plain white lights in the foggy/rainy conditions.

If it helps your brain, think of this as an alternative to a traditional "fog light" kit. See, it would just be using the existing headlights to produce the same result. Might save a great deal of expense (buying a "fog light" kit) at the same time.

I understand that. I have Yellow fog lights and have actually used them the way they're intended. but the point of DRLs is to make you more visible during the daytime, not to illuminate the road, which is why they run at a lower power. Why not just put yellow bulbs in the high beams and use them during the fog (I'm assuming you want the yellow to be from the headlights), Not sure if that'd be a smart idea or not considering that they're pointed up and not so much on the road. Not sure if that would cause glare or not.

It would cause a ton of glare. Even if it's during the day, they are still going to be bright. Hope you're prepared to get flashed all the time.

^^ Yeah that's what I'm saying. If you put them in your high beams A) They'll aim up and not at the road infront of you that you're trying to light up(This is why fog lights are generally mounted low I'm assuming) and if you wire in some sort of DRL set up, they won't be very bright. Sure they'll be visible from the outside, but I doubt you'll get any considerable light on the road.

So, let me get this straight.... you want to run your high beams as a fog light?

True, the yellow color does illuminate better, but high beams reflect off water droplets in the fog, reducing your visibility. Hence why all fog lights are lower to the ground on most cars and you should NEVER use your high beams when it's foggy outside.

^^ That too. lol Fog lights aren't that expensive. You can get a very good set on ebay for like 80 bucks with bulbs and everything. Yellow bulbs alone would cost you like 40 bucks.

Easy on the hostility, killer.

"Glare" would've sufficed and I would have said "good point". Good thing I haven't made the first effort to actually do this.

I dont want to go the VRD route and junk up the front of the car like so many of you do. Trying to stay as clean as possible. All well, on to the next brainstorm.

imo the VRD look clean. You have no idea how many people in my car club were surprised that they were aftermarket.

if you wanna make the front look stock and stay clean, either get factory fog lights or rig something behind your grills. I forget the users name, but she drives an RS3, she rigged some foglights behind her grill.

i actually have a kit at home to turn any high beam bulbs into DRL's...they only operate the high's on 30 or 40% power for the DRL's but allow for 100% when the high beam is needed....simple mod and the DRL output i similar to lexus/acura/any car with drl's in the high's

I fail to see the logic you use in trying to do this mod for reasons everyone else has already stated.

If you want DRL's why not use the parking lights?

Yellow light does not penetrate fog better. There are tons of articles that have dis-proven the theory behind yellow lighting.
