View Full Version : Flat radiator hose??

The main hose going from my rad to my engine has become flattened, not enough to restrict fluid movement tho. Temp light has never come on, gauge has never gone even a nanometer about normal and coolant light has never come on. Been like this for a couple months. Maybe the vaccuum made by the system is strong enough to 'suck in' the hose and this is normal for tC's? Forgot to ask about it last oil change, assumming they would have said something if it was bad though. Thanks in advance, will post pic later tonight on my cardomain page

Hmm thats odd... Never heard that happen before.

As long as there are no cracks/leaks you should be fine.

Could always upgrade to samco hoses ^^

Thought about those before, I do have blue painted rad cooling plate and engine cover to match already =)

Thanks for the quick reply, was like less than a minute lol

np ^^

Edit: Just to be on the safe side. Make sure you check your coolant level, when the car has been off a couple of hours. Don't want any of that pressurized hot coolant to come spewing out. From personal experience >.< a looooooooooooooong time ago.

Make sure its full, and the coolant reservoir as well.

My friend's car was really low on coolant, and the temp was always fine, oddly enough.

picture of radiator cooling plate on my cardomain page you can see the rad hose in question... http://www.cardomain.com/ride/3252975
resovoir level is fine...didn't take off the cap to the rad itself tho. I'll check that soon. I did open my hood tho after I reached my destination (engine's normal operating temp reached) I opened my hood and the hose was normal shape. engine was still running.

yeah that's definitely not normal.. i would look into it further if i was you.

that is really weird. does it keep that shape when the engine is hot?

1st time i've heard of this.. looks like it was pressed by something heavy..

There usually is a coil of wire inside the hose to maintain shape when the coolent contracts as the engine cools off adn it draws the expansion fluid in from the expansion/overflow tank. Make sure (when cold) that the radiator cap is not blocked or stuck up with anti-leak material and the hose going to the overflow/expansion tank is not blocked. Toyota coolent will turn into a pink solid if there is exposure to air or it dries out.

I did use bar's leaks once in my coolant, as a preventative measure. I'll definitely look into that because the coolant was a lot lighter than normal...didn't think anything of it though
Thanks so much, I'll owe you big if this ends up being a potential problem

Resovior hose is 100% unclogged, no clogs visible under rad. cap itself. Squeezed hose and fluid wanted to freely overflow out of the top of the rad. Flattened hose returned to normal shape when rad. cap removed. Replaced cap. Started car, let warm up all the way. Normal hose. 20 mins after car shut off, hose still normal (usually would have gone back to flat by then)

Thanks for the PM - the cap should allow the overflow fluid back into the engine easily and if there was the slightest stickness in the cap it would probably make the hose collapse from the slight vacuum created as the coolent contracted in the cooling engine. Nothing really to worry about as long as the coolent can flow into the engine. Usually the hoses are stiffer and don't collapse so easily. One word of warning is that the Toyota coolant is extreemly pure stuff and is intended to last the life of the engine without changing and comes premixed with a sealant in it already. You should never add water to it unless you are low on coolent and have no other choice and after which you should have it drained and replaced with the factory coolent. The all aluminum engine is very susceptible to corrosion if the coolent is contaminated. It will not happen very quickly but it causes all sorts of problems eventually.
The only other problem is with the hose flattened it could develop a crack in the rubber from the sharp bends as the hose ages.

Ok sounds awesome thanks so much again. So sometime when I have the extra cash, or maybe next oil change, i'll ask em bout the hose, and possibly get a flush/refill on the coolant. Cuz I did add that bar's stuff to it, and I did have to add coolant (didn't use straight water, nono) on one occasion after a round trip to chicago from pittsburgh.
Thank you! Checked out samco hoses too. They'd look sweet and match my paint job under my hood...but I don't have $95 to spend on two hoses just yet, haha, maybe with my new job.
