so many have already seen and known... i got me some BBS LM's... this is actually the 2nd set. i had some beat up ones i was restoring and got for cheap but was offered a price from someone i know for the silver set i couldnt refuse. so i picked up this set and thought to my self hmm what can i do to make them my own other then being first on LMs... so with out further delay..

STAGE 1: pics of rims when i got them and mounted on the car.

heres a fitment shot on the +35

http://i101.photobucket.com/albums/m56/95civic4dr/DSC05380.jpg

look nice but i wasnt happy yet... so im switching over to black lug nuts and that should help solve 1 issue i was having...2nd issue: my current tires were 225/45/17 and on the 7" wide rim they looked suppppper chunky sooo ill be going down to a 215/45/17 and some - camber so i can tuck the rim better and have it look nicer and not so chunky... i had to slam it down for it to look nice but now my tires rub on the fenders hence why im going to add some neg camber and smaller width tire... should solve that problem..

but i wasnt happy still soooooo..... after a long thoughtfull night of no sleep...i came up with the conclusion.. i has a weak arse lip!! i need lip!.... soooo another night of no sleep and some online research i came up with a small light bulb...

INVERT THE LIP!... that will give me a nice lip on the rim, change the look, and also give me another 5mm of travel to the outside.. which will leave me at a nice +30 offset.

STAGE: 2 off to begin the work.

heres how it started out
http://i101.photobucket.com/albums/m56/95civic4dr/bbs/DSC05458.jpg

then came this/ oh chet i poped my face off!
http://i101.photobucket.com/albums/m56/95civic4dr/bbs/DSC05474.jpg
http://i101.photobucket.com/albums/m56/95civic4dr/bbs/DSC05477.jpg

got one of my partners in crime inspecting my work

and the other partner in crime protecting the goods!
http://i101.photobucket.com/albums/m56/95civic4dr/bbs/DSC05491-1.jpg

here is how the lip and face of the wheel look PRE inversion
http://i101.photobucket.com/albums/m56/95civic4dr/bbs/DSC05472.jpg

here is how it will look after the inversion... look ma'aa i has deh lip nowz!
http://i101.photobucket.com/albums/m56/95civic4dr/bbs/DSC05470.jpg
http://i101.photobucket.com/albums/m56/95civic4dr/bbs/DSC05465.jpg
http://i101.photobucket.com/albums/m56/95civic4dr/bbs/DSC05467.jpg

what a huge difference! excuse my blue screen i was switching DVD's lol...

and here is a preview for now of the final outcome
http://i101.photobucket.com/albums/m56/95civic4dr/bbs/DSC05463.jpg

NOW im happy!! what a huge change form the original face location and design... changes it completely and give it a new look of its own. i like it alot better now! and looks like a 3pc design but really 2pc.

next step will be stripping the rims of clear cloat and polishing the entire lip

as u can see i have a lot of work to do on the mounting surface.
http://i101.photobucket.com/albums/m56/95civic4dr/bbs/DSC05481-1.jpg

ill update this thread as i make progress.

just curious, the nipple for air would typically be located on the otherside for wheels with lips right?... O.o its the only thing that bothers me lol...

TCpete
03-11-2009, 08:23 PM
on most rims its in that area where it is located now. on the 2nd step of the rim. on some rims its located on the inside barrel and pokes out through the face. but most rims have it on that 2nd step of a lip. its just noticeable on this rim because its all silver and the stem is very long.

i will be replacing the valve cap with somehing else other the the BBS cap to keep it funky but thats a secret no one knows yet lol

ok update 3/11/2009 2:20am

so after a super fast change from my work cloths into some BS gettin dirty cloths i quickly ghetto masked the wheels inner barrel with a plastic bag to protect the inner barrel from the paint stripper... i chose this because from past experience the stripper tends to eat paper to some extent and make it very brittle and i needed something i can flip around with ease so i can move the wheel around and get into tight spots so a plastic garbage bag was the perfect solution

SORRY IF THIS SET OF PICS POP UP BLURRY BUT I WAS IN A HURRY NEXT ROUND I WILL HAVE A TRIPOD TO TAKE PICS

heres a pic of the pre paint stripper
http://i101.photobucket.com/albums/m56/95civic4dr/bbs/DSC05502.jpg

http://i101.photobucket.com/albums/m56/95civic4dr/bbs/DSC05515.jpg

a little more scrapping and its looking mad shiny now
http://i101.photobucket.com/albums/m56/95civic4dr/bbs/DSC05521.jpg

and now after a quick wash with the rubber gloves on and a nice hose down to wash away the stripping acid
http://i101.photobucket.com/albums/m56/95civic4dr/bbs/DSC05533.jpg
http://i101.photobucket.com/albums/m56/95civic4dr/bbs/DSC05534.jpg

http://i101.photobucket.com/albums/m56/95civic4dr/bbs/DSC05531.jpg

thats all for tonight folks!!!! up next.. another small small coat of stripper to finally clean off any more clear deposits and off the sanding station for polishing!

also i dunno if any of you remember that candy green valve cover i did a few months back....

but that bish got stripped also..... !
http://i101.photobucket.com/albums/m56/95civic4dr/bbs/DSC05532.jpg

washing away alot of bad mojo and other stuff on this one and its going to get blessed with some hialeah voodoo and good positive vibes for 2009!

so did the VC ever peel? or did you just wanna change?

great stuff your doin man!

DEFINITELY FULL OF WIN!!!

TCpete
03-12-2009, 04:27 AM
nah the VC never pealed i tested it out for a few days and it was great but it was time for change for me... alot of letting go certain things and moving onto bigger, better, and more positive things and motions in my life. so im starting fresh with that VC. it was my original red wrinkle coat one which brought me lots good things. it was just time to cleanse my head and car and start 09 on a positive.

im glad that write up helped you out man and im glad its worked out for ya!!!! i hope to see it in person soon too! lol

thanks all for the comments so far each and everyone of ya'll!! just trying to do what no one else is doing at the moment and keepin it fresh for scion. ill update with in the next few days as i start sanding away and polishing up the lip... BTW this is only 1 wheel..i have 3 more to go haha so this thread will be an epic one.

ill also try to answer all the Q's as best i can.

how r u going to mount it?

its going to be mounted on the inner face of the ridge. in vw land they call it inverted mounting... its commonly found on other LM's with different patterns like for BMW, porsche etc etc on normal 114.3, 100 patterns the face is mounted on the outside like i had it before

the face is actually pretty flat. i thought about that but double checked and it should be ok. each bolt requires about 24 ft Lbs of TQ + some blue lock tight to help keep it in place. i wasnt able to start sanding yet but i should be able to get to it starting tonight.

update: 3/14/09

so today i took some time to organize a nice work area so i can work and not have my wife kill me for polishing rims in the spare bath tub LMAO! so i took over my entertainment room and turned it into a mini factory

on todays list: strip the last of the clear + 400 grit HAND wet sand the entire lip smooth from the outer ridge to the inner most tip taking away any grooves, blemishes, scratches etc etc. so after about 2 steady hours or work here is the outcome of pics

heres the work area and some of the crap i use or will be using...
http://i101.photobucket.com/albums/m56/95civic4dr/bbs/DSC05538.jpg

my little corner in the sweat shop! (yes those are nintendo games in the corner...NINJA GAINDEN on surround sound BISH!!!!!) lol
http://i101.photobucket.com/albums/m56/95civic4dr/bbs/DSC05544.jpg

as you can see the 400 grit has reduced the shinyness of it and created a satin finish like it was when it was previously coated with BBS's clear coat... this is normal when starting out with 400 grit and i expected to get this satin finish
http://i101.photobucket.com/albums/m56/95civic4dr/bbs/DSC05541.jpg
http://i101.photobucket.com/albums/m56/95civic4dr/bbs/DSC05542.jpg

and a close up... its starting to look and also feels very smooth... way better then before.. i also took out all the deep scratches it had.
http://i101.photobucket.com/albums/m56/95civic4dr/bbs/DSC05543.jpg

what ever darkness you see is just dried up gunk from wetsanding...

all in all it was a long day and so far the progress is coming along. up next will be 800 grit west sand... thanks for watching, more updates in the next few days!

BTW this thread has had over 1,160 views in 3 days.... WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

i started with 400 because there are minor gashes in the lip that would take for ever!!!!!!! if i started with 800. 400 is just faster and ensures that ALL the major scratches deep and small get sanded down and eliminated... thats why i started with 400. the LMs have grooves on the outter lip and inner ridge were the face mounts which needed to be sanded down smooth. 800 woulda take for ever lol.. thats why i had to start at 400. it would suck to have a fully polished lip with deep scratches.

ok UPDATE: 3/19/09

so here are the pics i promised...

here is a pic after 800 and 1000 grit sanding and also 1/2 of the wheel at 1500 grit woot!
http://i101.photobucket.com/albums/m56/95civic4dr/bbs/DSC05629.jpg

close ups

http://i101.photobucket.com/albums/m56/95civic4dr/bbs/DSC05635.jpg

here is a picture of my finger to show there is no reflection after the 800/1000 grit wet sanding
http://i101.photobucket.com/albums/m56/95civic4dr/bbs/DSC05631.jpg

ok so after i completely finished with 800 and 1000k i decided to start with half of the wheel with 1500 grit just to see what would happen... and finally i got some dam shine on this mofo!!
http://i101.photobucket.com/albums/m56/95civic4dr/bbs/DSC05633.jpg

super smooth finish at 1500
http://i101.photobucket.com/albums/m56/95civic4dr/bbs/DSC05636.jpg

here is a pic of wheel so u can see 1500 on the left and 1000k on the right. on the upper part of the wheel you can see the difference in shine. on the left a little smoother and brighter and on the right is a tad duller.
http://i101.photobucket.com/albums/m56/95civic4dr/bbs/DSC05643.jpg

here is a picture of my hands reflecting on the wheel on both sides so u can see the difference + more pics of the left side at 1500.

http://i101.photobucket.com/albums/m56/95civic4dr/bbs/DSC05648.jpg

a super nice close up... great shine and u can see the mirror finish is really starting to come in
http://i101.photobucket.com/albums/m56/95civic4dr/bbs/DSC05649.jpg

so what are you gonna use for the final polish? are you doing one at a time? or all 4 at once, lol

TCpete
03-20-2009, 12:18 PM
you doing the barrels as well?

nah the barrels are very clean. im going to just take the gunk off the inside and they will stay nice and silver with the oem paint. its just to much work for the entire thing. maybe in the future but not now.

are you doing this totally by hand or with tools?

yes totally by hand for now... but when i get to cream polishes i will be using a small buffing wheel with mother metal polish about 2 times over to get the shine out. I might using rubbing compound first but i havent decided yet. ill wait till i get to 2000 first.

sick!

so what are you gonna use for the final polish? are you doing one at a time? or all 4 at once, lol

im gonna use mothers metal polish and then a microfiber towel to wipe it off/buff along with my buffing wheel i picked up at lowes.

so far this is 1 wheel right now... i wanted to try it out first to make sure im getting the results i want before moving onto the other 3.. once this one is done ill start on the next.. and update when i put them all together again... expect this thread to be very long lol...

thanks man! u can swing by on the weekend and check them out if u want just LMK ahead of time. ill probably be outside with the buffing wheel cuz that could get messy and i dont wana do it inside the crib. when u get your RS's im sure your gonna do the same thing so practice now lol cuz its a PITA lol ill show you how to take the wheels apart and what not also.

03-20-2009, 04:05 PM
cool bro ill hit you up 2morrow

when im done with skool next year im deff gonna pick up a set of busted rs's and do this to em.

TCpete
03-20-2009, 04:17 PM
cool hit me up. and yea if u can find some RS's that need TLC with a clean lip ur good to go.. its really not expensive at all this entire process. the best price i got was over 200 bucks for all 4 lips ... i think ive spent about 50 at the most!!!!! and thats including the polish which was 11 bucks, the sand paper about 20, and the buffer wheel another 7...

03-21-2009, 04:40 PM

oh another question...is this possible to do w/ our stock wheels...bec. when i paint em black, i want to have a polished lip/edges!

u can polish the stocks... but man honestly if your going to do that i wouldnt waste the time and effort. its better to buy wheels with a lip then do that to stock that have no full lip design to work with.

FIYYYYA!

FIYAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA LMAO... TY cory!!! SW's are taking over again!

quick question!

whats essentially better, polished metal? or clear coated like they were originally? whats gonna last longer?

but damm pete........just damm!! that looks f-ing flawless!

well the clear coat protects the metal finish from all the road debris, contaminants, and liquids that might harm the metal.... how ever.. clear coats chip and peal after time which sucks because u have to strip the clear and re clear the rim... when its polished like this i dont have to worry about the clear chipping or scratches in the clear how ever its more maintenance to keep it up and i gotta keep it polished or keep polishing it every few months to keep the shine.. so its really all up to you... for me i'd rather polish it every few months and just clean the wheels then deal with clear coats that crack and fade over time. the original clear was nice but started to flake and crack in some spots ( i cant blame it for being a 9 year old rim lmao ) so thats why i decided to polish it rather then re-clear... plus the polish looks alot nicer lol and i wanted a bling bling lip look. both will last long its all about maintenance , weather condition, and the area u drive in...

so sickk man haha i need to get to ACE hardware and cop me one of those

yo no lie rodale 20 bucks well spent for the drill alone!!! lol

im going to the paint shop today to check out prices on paint. i dont wana pay someone 400 bucks to paint something i can do myself... if its to expensive ill keep the gold which i love... if not.. the color is going to be in the areas of blue's, purples or greys...

Pete, how hard would it be to paint the centers with the mesh?

pete were you wet sanding or dry sanding ? or both ? what was the difference with each one.

nebster
03-25-2009, 10:08 PM
not that hard he's got it all seperated, just more time to spend sanding

Silverstreak-tC
03-25-2009, 10:11 PM
wet sanding is better tho cuz you dont have to keep dusting off your sand paper but some of the sand paper dont come wet especially from 320 down might be 220 down . cant wait to see the finish product.

TCpete
03-25-2009, 10:14 PM
Pete, how hard would it be to paint the centers with the mesh?

very easy... since its apart i just strip the paint, primer, wet sand primer, wet sand primer and paint then clear... very very simple since its all apart.. if it was still on the rim it would be alot of masking + what i mentioned above...

pete were you wet sanding or dry sanding ? or both ? what was the difference with each one.

all wet sand.. no dry sand... dry sanding produces more scratches and doesnt allow all of the material to slide off the metal and sand paper which maintains a constant contact of sandpaper and metal VS. sandpaper/material your sanding/metal.... water also helps lubricate the sand paper so its easier to glide it along the surface. help that helps..

ill be offering polishing services to SL soon... just making up a logo now and how im going to run it.... i can polish rims, valve covers, turbos, just about almost anything that can be polished. :P

Pete, how hard would it be to paint the centers with the mesh?

very easy... since its apart i just strip the paint, primer, wet sand primer, wet sand primer and paint then clear... very very simple since its all apart.. if it was still on the rim it would be alot of masking + what i mentioned above...

How would you get inside the mesh to wetsand?
