Not trying to knock these lights but I do hope that any prospective buyers realize that they are strictly for show. If that's what you want, enjoy them but if you're looking for useful driving lights that actually add useful roadway illumination for night driving, please look elsewhere. LEDs just don't have enough light output to be used as fog or driving lights.

CIONIDE
04-18-2009, 08:07 AM
^^x2, LED's suck for light output, these aren't fog lights at all, they're driving "show" lights.

VonStarINC
04-20-2009, 04:26 PM
Quality is dope, the fit is on key, everything is perfect except I can't get them to turn on yet haha.

I tapped into the fog lights up front, and Tried to tap the switch into the dimmer inside, and fried something.

So I'll re-wire them to the battery on wednesday and get some pics for you guys lit up

I think the best thing to do is tap into the side marker lights in the leadlight. I dont even use them I took the bulbs out. I am thinkin if I get these ill get an empty 194 wedge base and make a connection right into the socket. Should be easy...

Can you actually do this without adding a relay for your switch and stuff? just tap them into the parking light wires and they'll come on?

Please let me know, trying to get this ish worked out without spending a fortune

DarkBox8
04-20-2009, 05:56 PM
I am pretty sure that would work. As long as these lights require a 12v I don't see any problems. Obviously though if you want a switch you would have to figure something out. But if these are tapped in the parking lights they should come right on. I did something similiar with my puddle lights and they worked fine.

Give it a shot and see what happens I guess

TheWhiteNoise

I doubt you need a relay for these small LED lights. Might want to add some inline fuses though.

I believe Audi uses Osram Golden dragon LEDs for their DRLs and they are definitely bright enough to be seen during the day. They also have an all LED headlight option on the R8, for only 8 grand more!

chemistrus
04-22-2009, 05:35 PM
Those are the correct type but that is on the new A4 there are different on the A5 and R8. The Lumes are about 55 which is pretty bright for a LED. I think the headlights do something in the 100 or 1000.

CIONIDE
04-22-2009, 10:46 PM
Yeah http://tinyurl.com/dk62n3
I think the misunderstanding going on here revolves around the word "driving" lights. If you want DRLs, then LEDs work fine. They are very bright to look directly at, although they throw off very little light (almost none) over any distance. The link above notes that: Thanks to the latest chip technology and the special SMT package, these LEDs produce a uniform white light with a brightness of 18 lumen. It also refers to: Golden DRAGON high-power LEDs that underline the sleek elegance of this high-performance model. The LED for brilliant white daytime running light has a brightness of 50 lumen.

To give you some lumens for comparison, the xB2 reverse light that many people feel barely lights anything up for backing visibility produces just under 400 lumens, and our H11 halogen headlights are in the 1200 lumen range.

All that said, if you're looking for show lights or DRL's then these new LEDs for the fake front vents are fine. If on the other hand, you are actually looking for something that will provide significantly improved forward visibility from the driver's perspective while driving at night or in fog, then these are not your answer.

Agreed. I was just pointing out that there are LEDs that are in fact used for DRLs and Headlight applications. These are definitely just for SHOW.

If you google "HID lumens" there is a lot of info (not all in agreement), but this seemed to give some numbers:

This article will explain why halogen vs. HID is not just about the difference in lumens:

Greg S

Another option, if you are electrically inclined is to make your own like I did. Two rows of 5mm LEDs (15 per row) drilled in each false vent, I also drilled 6 LEDs around each projector and 12 in the space above the turn signal. For a total of 96 white LED added to the front of the xB. In between the rows of white LEDs on each false vent are a row of 14 amber LEDs tied to the turn signals.

I've noticed that the vleds in the turns make the blinker blink like its on crack. Also saw the same thing with a Chevy panel truck at work, that has led's in the tail lights.

Whats the cause?

Hannibal
10-31-2009, 03:47 PM
It has to do with the amount of power that is required to power the LED's. Since they require less power to run than the stock bulbs it assumes that one of your lights is out and blinks rapidly. They sell a replacement flasher that gets rid of the rapid blinking. Just look here LINK (http://www.scionlife.com/forums/showthread.php?t=162980)

elwaylite
10-31-2009, 03:53 PM
Thanks. Is there really a negative to the fast flashing, other than wearing out the normal bulbs quickly? It does not bother me, and there are some cons to adding that second part.

Greg S
10-31-2009, 04:08 PM
It has to do with the resistance of the bulb, the LED bulbs have little to no resistance while an incandesent bulb is much higher. There are two way to fix it. Change the flasher or put a resistor in line with the new bulb. Both will fix the fast flashing problem.

Hannibal
10-31-2009, 04:42 PM
No I don't think that the fast flashing will hurt anything. If it doesn't bother you then I wouldn't worry about it. I have both the flasher and the bulbs and have been thinking about putting the stock flasher back in because I kinda like my lights flashing when I lock my car.

Yeah, that was one of the cons. It does not bother me, so I think I'll just leave it alone. Its actually amusing how quick it flashes.

Those are really slick, though it looks like another good reason for the cops around here to pull me over. /paranoia :relief:

It should not be a reason for a cop to pull you over. The Audi S5 has them on the grill but now if you got bunch of mods then probably.

Do you have any close up pics of the area above the turn signal? I thought that was a perfect area for some additional lighting and would like to see how you did it. Thanks

I chose to go a different route for a driving light solution... replaced my amber incandescent front turn signals with V-LEDS dual color front LED turn signal bulbs. "HID" white running lights that blink amber when the turn signals are on. Sorry for the bad pics, my camera sucks and has a dead battery.

Can't wait to put in HID headlights, so they don't look yellow.

These are the bulbs I have (5k white), but they also come in 6k white:

This is the replacement flasher to get rid of the hyper-flash; but as you've read above, when you put it in you no longer have the blinking turn signals when you use the key remote to lock/unlock the doors. It still beeps, but no more flash.

Installing Scion xB Front Bumper Vertical LED Running Light from Oznium on 2009. Want them to be true DRL's.

Anyone know which wire under the hood can I tap into to get 12v when the engine is running?
