*disclaimer* I take no responsibility for this, or what you do with your free time. If you somehow manage to paint your entire face and go blind, accidentally eat a unopened bottle of spray paint or end up doing graffiti on some freeway walls ITS YOUR FAULT. Thank you.

I got bored and didn't know what else to do. As M@ put it, i had a itch to mod. So this is what i came up with. Pics are of fuse covers and what not, I previously did the engine cover.

First pull off the pieces you want to paint.

I used 320 grit sand paper and started sanding away.

Cover sanded down. It should be smooth. not super duper smooth but smooth enough. Make sure you wash/rinse it do get rid of all the little dust pieces lying on there. From here I would suggest masking everything you dont want paint on. I decided not to mask the small pieces because i didn't real care. I just used plain on masking tape and newpaper on my engine cover.

Grad you can of dupli-color ground coat and shake it like a polaroid picture.

Lay your pieces down a whatever you want. I used newspaper, and in this picture a old paper bag i had lying around. Spray 6-8 inches away from the piece and dont stop in the middle. Make sure you get a good coat on, BUT dont overspray. If its thin you will apply more coats. I ended up doing 2 coats on these small pieces and 3 or 4 on the engine cover. Dont worry if it's too thin!! just layer it again!! Let the paint dry 10 mins before applying another coat.

If you have dust spots or orange peely type paint, which you shouldn't go over the ground coat with 600 grit sand paper.[/img]

Let the ground coat dry for an hour. Then grab your duplicolor metal cast paint. Put the paint can in your right hand, close your eyes open your mouth and shake it like the can like you were rolling dice. Make sure you do this in front of all your friends. They will think its the coolest thing ever.

Begin painting like you did before. *VERY IMPORTANT* DO NOT OVERSPRAY!!! I did 1 coat too many on my engine cover and the metallic flakes bunched together. I then tried to sand it down but it smeared!! even with wet sanding!! Only coat it til it looks nice!!!

Let the paint dry then apply your clear coat. Do as many layers as you want. I recommend 4-5. If it's rough with dust and what not you can try to sand it a little. Like i said before i stopped sanding because i got streaks in the paint.

quick question. does the fuse line stretch that far or did you do something to it? mine is hitting the aem intake and it doesn't go that far i believe. not far enough to bolt it anywhere

how does the duplicolor stand up in heat? will u have to paint it again later after few months to retain the coating? or will it resist the harmful engine dust/heat/ etc...?

i'm thinking of doing that...nice DIY post.

where's a good place to get duplicolor?

TheRedBox
01-24-2004, 12:33 AM
I have no idea what the duplicolor stands up to heat. but its only 5 bucks a can and you can easily respray.

Kragen as the paint.

They also have high temp paint there, but they're not as nice.

I looked on their Web site ... they say it has been tested up to 500 degrees F so I'd say you're OK :D

Thank you Red Box for this awesome DIY, scionjohn and I hit up the Kragen today. We will be doing our rides tomorrow.

on my truck (when it was in pieces) i took the high-temp engine paint to all of the metal accessories and haven't had an issue ... keep us updated on how the paint withstands the heat ..........

On second thought, i think it would be too much Orange, looks like the whole engine bay is painted Orange. I think ill leave it black then

it started out black too...

they use a paint pen to write the letters back on after painting.

Check some pens out here:

I've also heard there's a liquid mask available.. just apply it wherever you DON'T want paint, do your thing, and then peel it off.

Do you figure that using the ground coat, but with one of the high heat paints as a top coat that the "metallic" look will still come through? I ask becuase I'm partial to blue, but the MetalCast blue isn't that nicest.

What's the plstic piece on the left (passenger) side of the bay, behind the windshield fluid lid. I don't have that on my echo.

I disagree with quadraphonic... I like the MetalCast metallic blue. Im doing the plastic parts of the engine right now with it, with the exception of that plastic cover that says VVT-i... because i think THAT much blue is too much.

Still, the bright blue of the MetalCast color contrasts nicely with the darker color of the Indigo Ink. PM me for pics.
