View Full Version : getting the oil bolt out
my06tc 04-16-2009, 07:13 PM hi there
i have to change my oil cause its dirty and was trying to get the bolt out and it wouldnt budge i try wd-40 pam and other stuff......if there any tricks on getting a tight bolt out..
its easy to reach but that sucker wouldnt come out and i know how to replace oil but this is my first time for this car and i wanted to try myself
any suggestions..should i try harder i dont wanna pull the oil pan off if i try to hard
Danger_Darren 04-16-2009, 07:24 PM Just try harder. Sometimes those things are on there really tight, like 100ft/lbs tight. Also, don't forget to replace the crush washer. I have seen someone run an engine dry because they didn't replace it and the oil plug actually vibrated out.

my06tc 04-16-2009, 08:23 PM yea i just need to be in a good position to where i can have enough strength to get it out...
i wasnt really trying hard i mean i was putting some force to it but not enough just have to try again if worse comes to worse il have my buddies take a look at it see what they can do cause i do know as you said it can be really tight but it should only be hand tight
KillaSpiceTSW 04-16-2009, 08:42 PM Just get a decent sized socket wrench throw a 14mm on that sucker and turn it off. If that doesnt then take a bar or a jack bar and put it over the wrench to get more leverage and pull it off...

Yeah, should is the key word. I used to work at a shop doing oil changes and even on a lift i would have a hard time getting the oil plug out. Have you tried just using a longer ratchet/wrench?
kuo34 04-16-2009, 11:20 PM I'm only recommending this because I do it every now and then - make sure you're turning the bolt the right way!
That and be persistent. It's like they use robots at the factory to put everything together. Weird.
--Final_Wrath-- 04-16-2009, 11:24 PM Or you can just double wrench....always works. Just dont hit your face.
davedavetC 04-17-2009, 12:56 AM or use a 1/2 drive rachet and socket lol
my06tc 04-17-2009, 01:47 AM thannks gie im goona try again i can do it..
i was turning counterclockwise but that sucker must be in there really good....might have to warm up the car little bit longer..
my06tc 04-17-2009, 01:50 AM any tips on getting the oil filter out i dont have a tool for it should i get one or it should unsrew right out
KillaSpiceTSW 04-17-2009, 02:01 AM Take a flathead screw driver and stab the filter through the side, but make sure you have the oil pan underneath. Then with it in just turn.... Or just put on a batting/mechanic glove that has rubber grips on it and turn... Theres server ways bro.

If you plan on doing it again you should get one, but it should be on there only hand tight. The tool is basically a giant socket that fits on the end of the filter and onto your ratchet. If you don't get one, you can use a large pair of pliers to crush the filter and twist it out.
my06tc 04-17-2009, 12:07 PM thanks gies alot of great tips..
Tc4Eva 04-17-2009, 04:11 PM To get the bolt out, try a longer ratchet and a big hammer. Had to do that the first time I changed my oil. If you plan on changing your own oil from now on, I recommend the filter tool, it was about 7 dollars from the dealer when I got mine bout a month ago.

i use that pipe every time i work on my car.
my06tc 04-17-2009, 07:21 PM i got it out all done i just needed to pull a little harder came out..i used rachet and a 14mm socket thats all......i had gloves on this time so i think that made a better grip..
I borrowd the oil filter tool from my neighbor made the job so much easier then plieers or puching a hole on the side to messy..
so guess someone can lock this thread
