Default What is this?

I went to put in a new air filter last night(K&N), and I never before looked up under the top of the airbox, It appears there is ANOTHER filter, that is permanently in there. Anyone ripped this out? What is it? why two filters?

It's the carbon filter. Required for emissions... they're on every 06.5 box.

Yup... tC has had that since the beginning. Most people just removed them to free up a little more air.

And correct, a CAI or other aftermarket intake would NOT have it.

What is the theory behind the carbon filter on the intake???? Less carbon in less carbon out? Amazing how the EPA once 100mpg cars and they keep making them heavier and more restrictive on the intakes and exhausts with all there requirements

It's there because supposidly some air/fuel mixture somehow majically makes it passed a closed throttle body, up the intake pipe, pass the air filter, and up n out the snorkel into the atmosphere doing "harm" to the environment when you shut your engine off. I dunno which loser spent the time coming up with that crazy idea, but that's why it's there. Just yank it. I doubt someone is really going to go through the trouble to make sure you have that little thing in there...........Can pass inspection without it here in NY, just incase anyone was curious.

Thanks, I thought the same thing "I dunno which loser spent the time coming up with that crazy idea, " I wonder how much money was spent on the research into that and how much it cost auto manufactures to implement, way more than any good it does I am sure.

Same place... open the top of the stock airbox, there should be the normal filter in the bottom section and the carbon part still in the top section.

CARB did.. then the feds started making it mandatory.. no offense to my Cali peeps, but sometimes I can't wait for that fault to open.. lol.. J/K.. really.. but CARB sucks.. there are
so many more efficient ways to lower these type of emissions.. however this way costs these organiziations no
money (and doesnt put their "contributions" from the real plluters at risk).. put it on the manufacturers and owners.. crap

ok, I noticed the carbon filter last year and have thought of cutting it out and replacing it with a screen....It seems like a bad idea for it to not be replaceable.
Won't it eventually get somewhat dirty eventhough it is behind the main filter?? Have many of you already cut it out?
