5speed vs Auto

5speed vs Auto
I have a 2008 xB Auto and 2008 xB RS 5.0 5 speed.
I do not drive the RS very often (wifes ride), and recently I drove it and noticed that when I was going 70 to 75 mph the 5 speed runs about 3k more RPMs.
I have always been under the impression that a 5 speed would/should have lower RPMs vs a automatic.
So does anyone have any average RPMs for thier 5 speeds?

Ex. The xb2 and the camry have the same 2az-fe tranny but the gearing is much shorter (for quicker acceleration) than the camry. The cons of the shorter gearing is the high rpms at hwy speeds.

I just read about a guy who had a toyota AT truck that just hit 900,000 miles on original tranny.... As long as you don't abuse them they will last. When backing out a driveway for example, come to a complete stop before you switch into drive. You can destroy an AT by "rolling" into D from R hard enough. It stresses the gears quite a bit.
Anyway, at 70mph my car usually is at 2700 or so rpm (AT).

In the xB1s, the MT has a final drive ratio of 4.31, while the AT has a FDR of 4.15. Top gear in the xB1 MT is an overdrive .82, while top gear in the AT is an overdrive .7. Multiply the two, and you get a 3.63 ratio for the MT, and 2.68 for the AT. That means the MT xB1 buzzes along at 2800 rpm at 55 mph, while the AT xB1 loafs along turning only 2070 rpm at 55 mph. Toyota did this to give the xB1 MT owners a sportier around-town drive, while guaranteeing they'll suffer purgatory on the highway. It also did it to give AT xB1 owners better fuel economy in top gear lockup to make up for the torque converter slippage and lack of pep in their rides.
It doesn't have to be that way. The gearing difference in the xB1 AT and MT models is 36%, one of the severest differences out there. My MT Sentra SE-R's gearing difference from its AT cousin is only 4%, and my wife's Hyundai Elantra's MT and AT gearing differences are an in-between 14%.

Extrapolating to 75 mph, the xB1 MT would be turning 3818 rpm at that speed, and the xB1 AT would be turning 2818, an insane 1000 rpm difference. It's one of the reasons I don't push my xB1 much faster than 60 mph.

Thank for the ratio percentages on the XB1.
I have really been thinking about jumping in and getting a new XB2.
But I am still on the fence on whether to go automatic or manual.
I drove my Brother's manual XB1 for a few months and it was lots of fun shifting that thing so I'm inclined to get the MT for the XB2.
However, is the manu-matic feature on the XB2 any fun?
How's the ratio percentages on the XB2?
Am I going to suffer in mileage purgatory in the MT XB2?

Honestly, and this is coming from a 5spd guy, Im glad I got the auto. Its plenty fast, gets good mpg's, and drives great. I do not miss my 5spd in stop and go.
Im 80 hwy 20 city and easily get 28.5 every tank.

well to be honest I too had a little deciding to do when we picked our Xb2 out. I have always had MT's and like the performance, fun, and usually better fuel. If this were going to be the case with the Xb2's I would of rather saved the $800 or so and bought the MT, but we drove both the MT and the AT and I payed close attention to the RPM's at highway speeds, and was shocked that the AT was cruising lower. My mothers car revs very high (5 speed saturn vue) and on trips if you kick it up to 80 or so, its really reving, and I just don't like doing that for 2+ hrs, plus its louder so with those thoughts in mind we went with the AT. So far we like it. we have 2200 miles and got in the 27's every time, avg speed is 25-28mph. Only one bad tank at 25, but we were in about 4 hrs of traffic that tank.
I do like the looks of the MT counsel WAY better, and I enjoy driving MT's but, this ones for my wife and I didn't disagree on the AT, anyway. Good luck with your purchase.
