I was on the parkway it was kinda late and i was pretty tired, but i was just crusing along and I passed this mitsubishi mirage. A couple minute later he is on my tail, so I went from 5th to 3rd until redline (couple seconds) then the worst shift of my life happened. As went went to shift into 4th I hit 2nd and the rpm needle was pinned to 7 for like a second. I couldnt belive it and feel soooo stupid
I feel no loss of power but i think im hearing some raspy hisses that weren't there b4 but Im not sure if they're there or if im paraniod.
Did I kill it, or will it live to see other stooopid mistakes? does anyone know what the effects of this situation are on the life of the engine?

I am a sofa king...I am a sofa king...I am a sofa king wee tawd it

It's fine, the rev limiter is there for a reason, plus if you were really really going way to fast for a gear, it wouldnt let you downshift into it.

your just paranoid....

I thought so but it didnt sound/feel/look limited, but Im in such a paranoid and tired state that I am totally freaked out about it... a tree branch fell on my hood the other night, and crushed it, there is also a ding in the roof, and i just found out that one of my good highschool friends was just ariegned tonight for killing his sister and some other dude at close range with a shotgun. Im a little edgy

Xbilly.. sounds like you blew yer engine. You should just give it away.. I've been looking for a silverish xB. Oh wait! Perfect! (ignore superjeer.. that xB is mine, dammit!)

BTW, there's no "a" before "sofa king".. the wwwzyzerrd told me.

Not to freak you out, but you *can* overrev an engine on a downshift. Rev limiters are electronic and cut revs on acceleration, but when you mechanically force the overrev by downshifting to the wrong gear bad things can happen. Your car is probably OK, though.

actually this is possible when downshifting like phinz said. rev limiter is to stop you from accelerating past a certain RPM limit so dont "float" your valves and end up bending them. i had a buddy with a 2000 prelude who shifted from 5th to 3rd going about 100 and bent a few valves. it made a nice ticking sound and when we pulled off the head, low and behold, valves were unseated  he had to replace his head due to the upper driveline being hosed. i wouldnt worry too much but if the ticking gets worse you might wanna have it checked. . .

and soory to hear about your friends >_<

If all else fails, send the xB to me. I'll pay for the shipping, don't let Jere have it.

Take the xB for a short test drive somewhere and see if it still drives the same. You should be ok.

As long as you weren't in the redline for an extended period of time, everything SHOULD be ok.

Just keep driving like normal unless something really stands out. In my personal experience I've always been more sensitive to different sounds after I've done something stupid. If somethings really wrong, you'll notice it. If not, the sounds will fade as your anxiety subsides.

I was talking to a few guys at work, and they said that the vvtl-i engines. (found in the celica gts.....) He said those bend valves is you over rev. He didn't say that the vvt-i would in that case. I made the same mistake you did I went from redline 3rd to 2nd getting on the highway. Slit second. Still have no problems. That was prob 2-3 months ago.

I say it's trashed :) Whethere is sounds fine, starts fine, runs fine, it is damaged and should be treated as such. I suggest you go ahead and start parting it out!

Oh, and I may be in the market for a couple of parts. How about those plastic things that go over the a-pillars (you know, where we mount our tweets).

I may also be interested in buying the glove box door and possibly the right front passenger door panel. Do you take paypal?

Make sure you offer discounts to those already owning camo's as we are special.

I'll be checking classifieds. :D

(seriously, you're fine, doubt you did any damage...and we will all soon forget your downshifting mistake)

Which reminds me.. I need to take a picture of my air freshener and send it to Adult Swim. Maybe they'll send me season four's DVD or something.

Nobody is clumsier than me, and I drove stick shifts almost continuously from 1978 to 2000 -- first a Ford Pinto, then a Toyota Starlet, and then one of the few stick Plymouth mini-vans. Never hurt the transmission of any of them.

The Pinto had low clutch life, but there's a rumor that vehible wasn't among the great cars of all time. I believe my Toyota clutch lasted until almost 100,000 miles.

You should be fine. That happened to my friend in his Matrix and the valves started to make some noise. Everything was gone in two week with a couple of hard drives.

the rev limiter will have no effect on a shift like that as its the transmission manually pushing the engine that high, why did you not put the clutch in right away when you realized that you had done it? I doubt you did any permanent damage. I know of quite a few s2000 owners who have bent valves and ruined engines over-revving, rsx's are also know to do this (or their owners i should say), maybe its the shift pattern.

I did put the clutch in right away, I just barely had it all the way out. im sure its fine. I got over it.

ditto.......... the rev limiter controls upshifts so you don't over-rev the engine - on downshifts you are on your own - a bad downshift on an s2000 at around 7krpm's
from 5th to 2nd will rev the engine to over 16k rpm's causing complete distruction
- Broken Valves - Smashed Plugs - Smashed Pistons - damaged tranny in some cases, etc.......... if your car is still runing properly - you might have avoided disaster!
