View Full Version : AutoX - Event #2, Yesterday
ack154 06-02-2009, 12:31 AM Yesterday was our second event of the season - I was event chair.
We had some rain in the morning, but it cleared up and the course (thankfully) dried before runs started. We were running at our mall course, which is by far the smallest lot we use. This course was a figure 8 but with the center point pushed to one side. Kind of fun and was different from our usual courses there and we still got 8 runs for the day!
I only got 2nd out of 2 cars in ST. :(
Here's the kicker, I lost to my own car. Only by .15 seconds though. I let one of our "veterans" run in my car for the day b/c he sold his Prelude earlier this year and is currently building a Lotus kit car (super 7) which is far from race ready.
I honestly don't mind that I lost... b/c he's been doing this a little longer than I have and I consider him to be pretty good. So even though he was getting used to my car, I'm happy to be that close. Of course I would have rather beat him... but that's OK. :)
I think I ended up 6th in PAX out of 45 cars. Something like that... so ya, not bad.
VIDEOS!
Only have my best run posted so far:

Hat_Trick_Hokie 06-02-2009, 01:44 PM Nice vid!
Since the event is at the mall, do you get a lot of people watching with dumbfounded looks on their faces? Haha
ack154 06-02-2009, 02:17 PM Ya, we definitely do. Some old lady even pulled on to the course... unknowingly of course.
But it's right on a corner too and people drive around around it and slow down or stop in the middle of a live road. Our course workers try to move them along to keep it safe, but people are dumb.
CarbonXe 06-02-2009, 02:21 PM Awesome, I'm hoping to get out to an event next month. I'm just hoping that it's not going to make me want to upgrade some stuff :(.
ack154 06-02-2009, 02:26 PM I'm just hoping that it's not going to make me want to upgrade some stuff :(.
Let me know how that works out for you. I'm already looking at getting a second set of camber bolts to bump up to -3*. If I can get them cheap anyway.
CarbonXe 06-02-2009, 02:30 PM Yeah I've been wanting to do AutoX for sometime, but just never got around to doing it. They have one event this Saturday but I won't be able to go and the next one isn't until July. I have a feeling I'm going to finish in dead last because of my class (I think I'm going to be put in extreme modified or w/e the highest is) but w/e, I'm doing it for the experience and fun. I've only got TRD springs, Hotchkis rear sway and some Kumho tires to help me out.
KENLUDE97 06-02-2009, 02:45 PM Fun spoiler here ;)

Thanks for the ride Ack! I was suprised to be able to beat you, your allways very fast and smooth.
If anything Ack i would beg borrow steal a pyrometer and find out if any more camber is needed. I KNOW that i see a few members running around with them at the event... And if your outsides are hotter than the inside then you could use more camber.
THANKS!
Ken
ack154 06-02-2009, 02:46 PM I'm pretty sure you'd be in SM (Street Modified). The turbo is one thing, but the rear seat delete would also put you in that class... as would any carbon fiber body parts.
The class is pretty open actually. Could be just about anything in there. I've seem some REALLY well prepped Hondas run in there, as well as a 350Z with some light mods.
CarbonXe 06-02-2009, 02:50 PM Yeah I figured with the turbo, weight reduction, tires, and some suspension mods, I'd have to run with the big boys lol. I'm still not really sure though. If I really like doing AutoX (which I know I will) I might get some light wheels, coilovers and brakes during the off season. I want to get rid of my car, but at the same time...I just want to keep it to use as a race car/weekend driver.
ack154 06-02-2009, 02:53 PM Ya, thanks Ken. Now get back to work! :P
Coilovers and some RPF1s are still tops on my list. Beyond that I'm kind of at the limit of my class for the simple stuff. I think. Some Corbeau A4s would be nice also.
I've at least debated keeping the tC as a "fun" car after it is paid off. But it will really depend on what comes out and if I find something I really like before it's paid off.
CarbonXe 06-02-2009, 02:56 PM Get some CR1's, the A4's aren't supportive enough IMO. I LOVE my CR1's. And from what I've been reading, aside from tires...seats are one of the biggest improvements you can make to the car for AutoX.
CarbonXe 06-02-2009, 02:58 PM Oh, and I know it could depend on the track, but what gear do you stay in, second or third?
ack154 06-02-2009, 03:00 PM Interesting. I'd just always heard the A4s make good "starter" seats. Then again if I'm going to be spending a few hundred $$ for seats and then more for brackets, might as well get something nicer, right. :silly:
KENLUDE97 06-02-2009, 03:03 PM Alan there is a set of A4's sitting in my garage, if you wanna take them for a test ride let me know. I felt secure in your car with the harness, but hey it could be some weight loss too, and might bring the seat lower too.
Personally i would look into a LSD, before more suspension work, exp for a Daily driver. I LOVED mine you can get on the power earlier out of the corners, and we were lighting up the inside at this event...
ack154 06-02-2009, 03:04 PM Oh, and I know it could depend on the track, but what gear do you stay in, second or third?
Rarely ever in third. Almost all courses are just second gear. Occasionally I'll stay in first for a few seconds - like that vid above, I'm in first around the sharp right and then the sharp left right at the start - then it stays in second.

Ya, I figured those were what you had from those pics before. The LSD just seems to complicate things for me though. It's $1000 for the tC + install, and even then I end up in STX.
CarbonXe 06-02-2009, 03:09 PM Oh, and I know it could depend on the track, but what gear do you stay in, second or third?

Figured that...my second gear is damn near useless . Once boost hits at about 3500RPM, bye bye traction.
And trust me on the seats. The A4s are great, but the CR1s are much more aggresive. I got mine for a steal. If I didn't find this set for $300, I would have went with the A4s.
Then again, I don't actually have CR1's...mine are the Carrera's, which are the last-gen seats. They're made for up to 32-34" waist, where the new CR1s are 34-36".
KENLUDE97 06-02-2009, 03:10 PM Well let me know if ya wanna sit in them. They are "narrow"
Yes a LSD is not cheap and not easy, but SOOOO worth it, and hey there is usually good competation in STX.... But hey do what makes ya happy :)
I'll butt out now.
Hat_Trick_Hokie 06-02-2009, 03:11 PM What harness are you running ack?
I just do the "lock trick" with the stock seat belts and it does just fine for me :D
ack154 06-02-2009, 03:16 PM Well let me know if ya wanna sit in them. They are "narrow"

Ya, I actually beat John this last event. So that was kind of nice. But there isn't much other STX competition. I'd probably do OK in STX with the LSD and then maybe go to a wider wheel/tire. I think that just ends up coming down to the $.
I have the Scrothe Rallye 3. It was attached to the upper rear seatbelt mount. But just last night I changed it to the child seat mounting bolt in the rear. It is up higher than the actual rear seat mounting points (which are the common spots) so the angle is much better than it would be otherwise. I know anything less than 90* is baaaad. This looks much better than that.
CarbonXe 06-02-2009, 03:20 PM That's the harness I was looking at getting. Either that or the Willans Supersport.
ack154 06-02-2009, 03:23 PM Ya, I have tried to "lock trick" and that worked OK. Like the harness though. Another good investment if you don't have it is the knee rest from Zeta Products. Otherwise you'll have bruised knee after every event.

CarbonXe 06-02-2009, 04:05 PM Can you take some pics of your harness? I want to get some ideas for how to mount it and still be able to use my trunk.
ack154 06-02-2009, 04:10 PM Can get some pics later... but it does have a disconnect. So part of the rear section can just sit by itself in the trunk and the rest can sit on the floor behind the driver's seat. Right now I have it connected behind the driver's seat but can show a couple shots later when I get out.
CarbonXe 06-02-2009, 04:16 PM Thanks.

CarbonXe 06-02-2009, 06:00 PM Good shots! Loving the tripod action.
Ack, you should come down to the Time Attack event in August. I think it's either in Wall, NJ or Englishtown, NJ.
ack154 06-02-2009, 06:24 PM F-ing work and blocking photobucket!!!!
Hat_Trick_Hokie 06-02-2009, 08:12 PM F-ing work and blocking photobucket!!!!
Don't worry about it, they're lame anyways :P

Keep in mind, I just did this yesterday. Before I had it in the upper seatbelt mount, like I mentioned. Right now I've just had it setup as Option 1. But Option 2 will let you keep your trunk without much problem.
CarbonXe 06-02-2009, 10:08 PM Thanks. I guess I'll have to get the detachable mid section like that. Then if I want to open my trunk, I can just disconnect the harness in the middle.
ack154 06-02-2009, 10:36 PM The Rallye 3 and 4 both have the disconnect (others probably do too) right behind the headrest.
CarbonXe 06-02-2009, 10:49 PM The Willans harness' have a bunch of options.
http://willansmotorsport.com/index.php/Road-legal/View-all-products.html
ack154 06-02-2009, 10:54 PM Looks like there is only one there with the detachable tail. And it would be the equivalent of the Rallye 4 from Schroth... so you'd need two rear mounting points.
CarbonXe 06-02-2009, 10:57 PM :ponder:
ack154 06-02-2009, 11:03 PM Well there are three of the child seat mounts... so you could use that one and use the driver's side mount and the middle one.
sancho 06-04-2009, 11:31 PM looks like you even had some oversteer there at the end...fun stuff
ack154 06-04-2009, 11:34 PM Ya, I get some oversteer on throttle lift... fun to control!
CarbonXe 06-14-2009, 10:32 PM http://www.priracing.com/product.php/1180/0/sabelt-harness-clubman-3-point---2inch-shoulder-and-lap-straps
:ponder:
ack154 06-14-2009, 10:48 PM Looks like a good deal and I think those are decent harnesses too. Only thing is make sure how you're mounting the two lower ones. That particular version is a snap in which connects to the eyebolts they provide. Would also make it a cinch to take in and out though.
CarbonXe 06-14-2009, 11:30 PM They offer a bolt-in also. I didn't get them though. With VAT and shipping (not sold in the US, atleast not the Clubman 3), they were too much...which sucks because I really wanted those ones. Sabelt is rarely seen/heard of in the states, and they're one of the top Euro companies. I ended up getting the Rallye 3 in black. Simply because it was the right price and has the quick detach for the trunk.
Now I need to make sure I can actually fit in my car with my helmet on
ack154 06-14-2009, 11:32 PM Ha... it'll be close. I'm 6'3" and about 190-200 lbs and I'm REALLY close. If I'm sitting idle with my helmet on it pokes a tiny bit into the sunroof cutout of the headliner (not actually OUT of the car - but enough into that area to tilt my head a tiny bit). I never notice when I'm running, but it's kind of annoying when I'm not.
CarbonXe 06-14-2009, 11:36 PM Well I'm 6'4 and 185, so I'm right up there with ya. With the stock seats and my seating position, my hair would go into the sunroof opening, so I had maybe 1" of spare room. With the Corbeaus, I have some more room. If it wasn't for the sunroof opening, I don't think I would have even fit in the car lol.
CarbonXe 06-14-2009, 11:59 PM I fit! I had to move my seat one click up and recline it one more click back, but I still fit fine lol.
ack154 06-15-2009, 12:12 AM Ha... nice. I still haven't heard anything about my potential Corbeaus. I'm wondering if I should give them a call tomorrow or something (since it's been an even week since they've received it).
CarbonXe 06-15-2009, 12:18 AM Dunno, don't make it seem like you're desperate though.
ack154 06-15-2009, 12:21 AM Ya, that's why I figured a week or more would be OK... instead of calling like 2 or 3 days afterwards...
Kind of like trying to woo a lady friend... don't want to scare her away right away. :silly:
CarbonXe 06-15-2009, 12:22 AM Haha yeah.
rhythmnsmoke 06-18-2009, 05:58 PM I'm pretty sure you'd be in SM (Street Modified). The turbo is one thing, but the rear seat delete would also put you in that class... as would any carbon fiber body parts.

That would be me. SM. The last event we had, I didn't know what class I was in, so I entered in FSP. Yeah found out real soon...."Wrong"...lol. But they let me run in it anyway since it was Novice.
CarbonXe 06-18-2009, 06:01 PM I'm still not sure what class I'd be in. From what I'm gathering, it'll be SM or SSM (for some reason I remember seeing a Super Street Modified class), if SSM even exists.
I think I just want to be considered super modified
ack154 06-18-2009, 07:20 PM Ha... the SSM are for two seaters (well, what were originally two seaters... :P ). It was previously called SM2.
CarbonXe 06-18-2009, 07:23 PM I have a two-seater :lalala:
rhythmnsmoke 06-18-2009, 07:24 PM I'm still not sure what class I'd be in. From what I'm gathering, it'll be SM or SSM (for some reason I remember seeing a Super Street Modified class), if SSM even exists.

Brian I believe runs in the SM class. He's built motor and boosted. If you have the upgraded tires, then that will put you in Tire class for SM. It gets confusing, I'm still learning myself...lol.
CarbonXe 06-18-2009, 07:28 PM My wheels are sort of OEM equipped though. If it bumps me up, I won't complain. I'm in it to have fun, not to compete. I know I won't keep up with the things in my class and I don't expect to. I have a feeling I'm going to be running with a certain blue C5 Z06 vette though...and he's putting down...oh roughly 550WHP. :(.
ack154 06-18-2009, 07:33 PM The Z06 would be SSM... b/c he's a real 2 seater. :silly:
Class SM
Eligible Vehicles:
All sedans/coupes (models which were originally equipped with a minimum of four seats and four factory seat belts).
CarbonXe 06-18-2009, 07:38 PM Well, that's assuming they put me in that class.
This is so confusing lol. I'm just going to register and let them figure out where to put me in last place

550whp don't mean nothing in AutoX. Maybe Time Attack, but for the most part AutoX courses are usually tight and technical.
I would venture to say tires were more important than HP when it comes to AutoX.
ack154 06-18-2009, 08:54 PM 2nd'd. I know a guy that has a Z06 and doesn't autox it b/c it's just too much for most of our courses. He instead runs a new Impreza.

I guess I should have also said that he has the supporting mods to go along with it...like 345's in the rear.
