make sure your ride is clean throughout. Try to have a slight convo with the judge and wow them with what you have on your ride. Would be good to have some rare crap on your car too. Oh yeah make sure the ride is clean.

Probably depends on the show. A couple I've been to have had scoring sheets that you could see (or leave with your car for them to pickup) to know exactly what they're looking at and scoring.

I think detailing to the n-billionth degree would be a good start. Then detail some more.

Clean, VERY clean. I mean everywhere, don't just stand back a look at it. Run your hand in the wheel wells, is it clean? Under the lip, clean? Your pedals, CLEAN? Oh yeah and be nice to the judge, it's probably hot out and they are tired and cranky. Good idea not to give them crap. (unless it's kirby)

Try and clean up any wiring from your ICE install(s) sloppy exposed wiring looks like hell. Oh yeah and be nice to the judge, it's probably hot out and they are tired and cranky. Yo my advice is to get the outside done first then hit the inside. Get the attraction on the ouside since that's the first thing that people see. Not like, oh wow did you see his JDM column shifter on the xB. No they would rather be like wow, that fool got the Rocket Bunny Kit.

Hahaha come check us out at SI majority of us will be there reppin with Big J and the PHX Chapter. On a serious note don't be so worried about the award. Recognition will take its place in due time. First focus on the build of your ride the way you want it. Don't let anyone discourage you not even a judge of an event.
