Default Official E85 thread

Im planning on setting up my aem box to run both E85 and pump gas on the fly by using the nitrous control feature.

Question is does anyone currently run it?

How do you like it?

What power have you made?

What mpg do you see?

I would run it but worried about what hardware components in the fuel system may fail since alcohol is some bad stuff. Right now, I've got a walbro and return setup with aeromotive FPR. I have no clue if the rest of the system will tolerate e85. Anyone have thoughts on this?

from my understanding modern fuel systems do a much better job holding up to alcohol. I think our only weak points lie in the pump and too small injectors, but once those are replaced you are good to go. That walbro pump will work just fine too. I plan on running it whenever my car decides not to hate me

Yeah what size injectors do you have? You would have to bump up your fuel maps quite a bit. Expect sub 20mpg fuel readings...

Most modern fuel systems are designed with ethanol in mind. However sometimes when they are not designed to run with a high percentage of alcohol you can run into problems of deterioration of rubber components such as the fuel filler neck which can end up in the tank and consequently in the pump screens or worse yet in the injectors pintles.... It's happened before.

However I have never tried it with a Scion but who knows. Might be a good idea, would make good power. Definately need larger injectors, maybe two rails.

So here's the replace list so far:

injectors

fuel rail (preferably return fuel setup)

fuel pump

possible fuel filler neck (anyone make these aftermarket???)
OR Fuel cell in-car and remove the stock tank

anything else to add?

If you really want to be certain, I'd replace all rubber fuel lines with urethane or something else that holds up to alcohol. Shouldn't cost much or take much effort...cheap insurance.

oh yea.....e85 eats up rubber lines.....but chances are it wont eat ours......since they are designed to run some ethanol....but i would do it anyway like nodsetse said

Just as long as you realize you cant just easily switch back and forth. You gas milage will go down between 15-25% depending on tune. On methanol you are suppose to run a good bit more fuel, I don't remember the exact percentage but it all depends on your setup and final tune. I am sure it will require 15-20% more fuel due to the AFR is required when running E85.

Assuming a person has separate fuel maps for pump and E85, why wouldn't they be able to switch back and forth? I'm contemplating running E85 at the track instead of race gas since E85 is almost a dollar cheaper and the power gains seem to be the same or better in some cases.

Also, if you're running 1000cc injectors, when you switch back to pump and are using less fuel, would those larger injectors cost you MPG?

From everything I read you will have to be completely empty of E85 then you can use premium again. I think E85 runs higher injector pressure as well.
