Default Turbo Kits - Interest??

Hello all. I'm gauging interest for a possible group buy on a turbo system for the xA/xB. The kit will include a custom 4-1 style SS manifold, front mount intercooler, 14b or T25 turbo, and an upgraded fuel system (and everything needed to install the kit). The 'Stage 1' kit will be net around 200HP. Price will be $2500-$2800.
Please post on this thread (or email me) if you're interested. I'll post more details later if we have interest.
For reference, we just finished up a similar kit for a Toyota Paseo. The car put down 180HP at the wheels. Check out side for pictures:

We're going to offer the same deal for the tC folks too.

Thanks,
Josh Higgins

PS -- I know only paid sponsors are supposed to post 'ads' like this.... If we have interest, we will most definitely sponsor this site. Thanks for the space.

if you can get a reliable kit thats rated at 200whp without internal modification, mad props to you. but as of now, it has not been close to reached. wat other parts will u put on to make that kind of power? how much do you plan on boosting and what kinda fuel management are you gonna use?

wow funny stuff , you may have lots of tuning knowhow but you can't have too much 1nzfe experience. well good luck , if you can do it and have it not blow the motor big ups to you and if you can do it then..... lots and lots of people will go in on this kit.

NICE basic prices or your website man but how much does powdercoating the IC run cuz I get my piping dun for $120 w/o powdercoating.

But damn, nice price on manifold and mandrel exhaust

All I can say is.........at this point........I'm highly skeptical. But if you can do it, I will be very impressed.

I would never powdercoat on IC,, it's just a bad idea, anodized maybe if it was done right. but that's another story..

200HP was more of a 'goal' than a hard number. In reality, we won't know how much power it's going to make until we get some dyno time.
It's possible we might offer a thicker head gasket in an effort to lower the compression a bit. We're expecting the kit to run ~6-9psi. Fuel management is still up in the air, right now we need to get our hands on a car so we can make a demo/prototype kit. That being said: Anyone in the Denver area have a car to donate; that we could use for the initial fabrication and testing?? We'd need the car for at least a week, and the donor will get a significant discount on this kit.
I know a lot of you don't have $2.5-3k to pony up for a turbo kit; so as an alternative, we could offer more of a 'DIY' piece together type kit. This would include an initial run of turbo manifolds, IC pipes, and intercoolers that you could purchase separately. Then you would supply turbo, oil lines, and fuel management yourself. The turbo manifolds would run anywhere from $350-450 depending on the design, and manifold and intercooler kit together would be under $1000. This might be a more economical approach, but it's up to the group.

I have to put my $0.02 in on this issue. I know I don't have much experience with the xA/xB engine. I have had a 2.0 rated at 330hp. A friend had a very modified 2.0 with 540hp. So I don't see why the 1.5 could not generate 200hp with a turbo and engine module change.

With just turbo and no engine management change you will never get much more than 20-30 hp increase. Now the question, has anyone done a upgrade for the management unit?

I'd be interested in the kit but I really doubt that little 1.5 will put down 200hp @ 9psi... anything is possible but my experience with turbos leads me to doubt...

It will be interesting to see how many people will want to turbo charge their xBs...

Oh, BTW, what do the internals of this engine look like? I mean, how beefy are the rods/pistons/sleeves etc... some stock engines handle boost really well without blowing up...

The 1NZ-FE engine is a purpose tuned Toyota engine, changing any internal parts will negate it's original engineered characteristics (low punch torque, fuel economy, response) and produce sloppy results without the right tuning.

That said, FI on our engine will produce minimal to moderate HP results without risking major internal damage. Remember that the NZ-FE is designed for response -> meaning lightweight internals -> meaning more chances of damage under high stress.

The 1.5L Toyota Paseo we did recently put down 180HP at the wheels with a little tiny 14b turbo and running exceptionally rich at 9:1 -- hence why I had quoted 200HP for this kit.
There are a lot of ways to 'screw up' a turbo kit and/or the installation. We get people in our shop all the time that roll in with a turbo kit for their honda they'd bought off ebay and wonder why it doesn't spool up until 5000rpm and why it's dog slow. A quality kit with a properly sized turbo will net good reliable HP; and that's what we're going for.

word of warning to you and your donors, please search for the threads from el prototypes and stanford fabs on this. Something about the rod design leads to early failure, if I remember right.

Thank you super..........this is what I was referring to. I don't doubt that a properly done turbo kit will be able to acheive those numbers...........I think it's highly possible. What I doubt is whether the stock internals will hold up. And if they won't.........we're looking at a whole nother can of worms with internal upgrades............an expensive can of worms.

Hello,

Just jumping in with our .02, Heres the link to our write up. Any manufactures kit will have this effect on the 1nz. These results were based on a years worth of testing.

Hello,

No, we didnt give up. That link to our site was to inform everyone of our findings not a statment of defeat. A lot of claims of turbo kits coming and hp made with out dyno sheets seems to be the way of manufactures on this site. We have provided the dyno sheets, information on our progress and findings, magazine and show coverage, and a working kit.The kit is in production as we write this post. Kit will be available real soon now. Prices will be on our site.

180 whp!?! On stock internals!?! Good luck. The stock rods fail at anything higher than 7 psi. El Prototypes posted this info on their site to confirm what alot of peeps have been saying for a looooooong time.
