Hey guys, I'm looking to get started with a DSLR...
So, Canon EOS XS or Nikon D60?

I've always had a preference for Canon, but I know Nikon is HUGE in the SLR biz... help me out with this.

Yea, I read that... they favored the Nikon, but it seemed pretty close throughout. I'm looking for some real-world experience. I know a lot of you guys have pretty strong opinions either way.

The best way to decide which one suits you more is to try both. I'm not sure if you can still find these two models in commercial stores or not. We have mom & pop stores here that rent out camera gear. You could try looking for one of those in your area.

I am a Nikon man. But I'm not sayin that canon is bad by any means though. I have just always owned and used Nikon. I've heard that the nikon has a easier learing curve than the canon though for new users.

My last SLR was a Canon AE-1 35mm... I really liked it. I'm just not as happy with the p/s quality I'm getting at this point.

Yea im a Nikon fan for sure but in this situation, Canon would be a better choice. Plus even though Nikons having better bodies, Canons have better lens.

I'm also considering the D40... I figure, for my needs it's more than enough camera.

I had a D40 at first. I wish I would have kept it as a second body. Great camera.

Yea, I figure, for $450, it's enough camera for my needs. I currently have a Canon SX100 IS and I'm not nearly as happy as I was with my old S500.

I'm thinking this'll be a nice upgrade.

If you're going with Nikon, ignore the D60 and go straight for the D80. The D40/D60 are basic entry-level SLR's that really don't do anything other than help the user learn about SLRs.

If you do go with the D40, make sure it is the D40X 6.4MP vs. 10.??MP

See, I don't buy into the whole moar megapixel = better. In my experience, that's not the case.

From what I've read, the D40 and D60 have the same size imaging unit, so while the 60 is 10MP, the 6MP 40 is a bit finer in detail.

My 5MP p/s blew away my 8MP p/s...

I myself am a Nikon man but there is nothing wrong with Canon. Both are great. I just prefer Nikon ergonomics and bodies over Canon.

LOL, yea, it's dark out and there's nothing good to shoot in the house. I gotta take it along with me tomorrow.

and you are correct. im glad you got the D40. i was gonna hop in here and say get the D40 over both for your first DSLR (what you get for what you pay D40 wins everytime).

good to see you already figured it out yourself. keep the D40 and inexpensive nikon lenses for a few years practicing and if it is something you want to keep at move up to a D90 or D300/700/3 with some quality glass someday. it is good to start with the D40 though while you are still a "baby".

I realy like my wifes Cannon 5D MK2, so that's where my vote goes. For simple shots, I'm realy liking my Sony HX1.
