if i clear out my headlight by removing the orange reflector and install the silver coated orange lighting bulbs, will it pass inspection? i live in nj and have heard that there must be an orange reflector in the side markers. my worry is once i break em out they are not going back in. and would i have to worry bout tickets, all though a minor offence id rather not have the hassel... i never really modded any of my cars before so i was just curious... oh yea and i know there are plenty of posts about this but what corner lights are you guys using?

I don't know the laws in NJ, but Cali is really strict and cops have never tripped.
Not even on my old civic with clear coners. If you're worried, just don't use really
"blue" bulbs cuz they draw attention. Use amber or chrome/amber bulbs

Peace

If you clear the corners and have to go to get inspected or whatever just put the original amber bulbs in and they wont ever know.
At least thats what I do.

you will fail. You need the reflector to be DOT legal

they how do they sell cleared out headlights that are DOT approved?

I cleared my headlights on my truck, never gotten pulled over once for it. I use amber bulbs in the turn signals only beacause thats what they are supposed to be. But @ night its hard not to see my truck as I have some hella bright ___ foglights. people get out of my way when I drive behind them.

Couldn't you just slap an orange reflector on the exterior of the car?

yeah i'd stick a strip or amber reflective tape on the outer edge of the light and then peel it off after inspection.

Dang, folks, why grope around with the advice of people who don't really know what they are talking about when just about every state has their motor vehicle code online? Here's the info, right from the state of NJ:

39:3-61. Lamps and reflectors required on particular vehicles
(a) Every motor vehicle other than a motor cycle and other than a motor-drawn vehicle shall be equipped on the front with at least 2 headlamps, an equal number at each side, and with 2 turn signals, one on each side; and on the rear with 2 tail lamps, 2 stop lamps, 2 turn signals and 2 reflectors, one of each at each side; except that a passenger vehicle manufactured before July 2, 1954, and registered in this State may be equipped with one stop lamp, one reflector and one tail lamp and is not required to be equipped with turn signals. In addition, every such vehicle shall be equipped with adequate license plate illumination, and with one or more lamps capable of providing parking light as required in section 39:3-62. Turn signals are not required on the rear of a truck tractor equipped with double-faced turn signals on or near the front and so constructed and located as to be visible to passing drivers.

The FMVSS, which require front-side mounted amber reflectors, take precedence over NJ state law.

Yeah... but I was on my way back to Texas from Canada on a bike trip last year & stopped in a little country gas station in the middle of nowhere... Got off the bike & grabbed the gas nozzle.... Lady came RUNNING out of the station shouting "You can't do that!".....

Just like NJ... can't even pump your own gas there...... :loser: I told her she wasn't going to do it.. so she stood right next to me while I topped it off with every drop... had a long ride ahead & needed max gas....

Anyway... Back on topic, all you need is an amber reflector on the front of your car.
It can be anything from a stick-on reflector, reflector tape, or a built in plastic one. No vehicle anyware states that it must be built into your headlight. And most auto parts stores carry all different types of reflectors, red and amber, that can be legally used in any state. Don't get it twisted, if you need to be inspected, and they're looking for a reflector, as long as you have one (aftermarket or stock) you'll pass.

So before the inspection, just slap a stick on reflector and tell the law: :come:

Peace

couldn't you just change the side marker to an amber lense?

HAHAHA Oregon, when I stopped there late at night they did the same thing. Your not supposed to pump your own gas, then I said well if you guys would get the gas in the tank instead of on my car I would gladly let you do it.

They passed some law to make it mandatory for oregon people to pump the gas because the state wanted to create more jobs. I think it just creates more white people living in a trailerpark with broke down mustangs in the back yard.

as for smog, I lived in NEVADA never had to smog my car.

 look as long as u have an amber bulb in the front its all good even if its cromed.....

Not true. The Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (FMVSS) Title 108 requires an amber reflector mounted on the side of the car as far to the front as practicable.

as this is the law yes but no state law enforcement agencies check fed laws they use state laws and regs.

Again, not true. There are numerous states that have adopted the FMVSS in their own motor vehicle code. I'm not sure if NJ is one of them, but I would want to have a backup plan for inspections just in case.

hmm oh well , i'm just saying most states make their own to change a thing here and a thing there.

I live in NJ and have cleared my headlights 3 days after buying our Xb. I don't have to have an inspecton until 10/08, so there's no concerns about passing inspection now.

Anyway, I always take my truck to a private inspection station because I have tinted windows and did have tail light covers. I'd always pass there and it was worth the $30, plus I could schedule the inspection instead of waiting at the DMV.

doesnt matter if you have clear corners, what they are most likely looking for is the color of your bulbs. If you get pulled over & get a ticket then just put the orange turn signals back in, and thats it

here in miami it's illegal to have cleared or blue bulbs i guess the cops don't have time to write a ticket for bulbs they rather catch the speeders, anyway i had my 2001 honda civic cleared corner with blue bulbs and never got a ticket but got at lease 8 speeding ticket doh...

As for the legality of "cleared lens"
follow the discusion in the (search) thread "green turn signals"
Tomas did a lot of research on the subject

also several threads on "how to clear front signals"<there are several methods>
