View Full Version : if you ONLY had 1000 to spend...

Since usually among the various reasons we got a box is b/c it was very economical, and invariably we negate that by spending $$$ on aftermarket parts for it  , I was wondering:

If you only had $1000 to spend on mods/upgrades/accessories for your Scion xB what would you get? or for those of you big spenders... :tap: if you had a friend who just got a box and only had about $1000 to spend what would you tell him to get?

and I mean a completely stock scion (no dealer options):

I would probably get the following (i've inflated internet prices about 20$ to account for shipping/tax then I rounded to make the price easier to add).

Generic floormats: 25$
Cargo Mat or Cargo Liner: 75$
License plate frame: 20$ (more for a custom ones)
Injen Short Ram Intake: 170$ (b/c its the cheapest intake)
Lowering Springs (Various): 185$
Progress Rear Sway Bar: 170$ (cuz I hear only good things)
DIY ground kit or Groundfusion's kit: $30-65
Interior Light Kit: $120 (used randode's website price + 20$)
Exhaust?: 300$ (yeah... not sure which or what I would get so I just made up a number)

Total: $1095

 just a little over... I guess I could live without a few things maybe scrap the cargo liner and make my own :eyebrow:

OR I could just consider them essentials and therefore not a mod :lalala:

If I didn't get the exhaust, i might be able to dump more electronics into the interior.. maybe some headrest monitors or a flipdown... an upgraded rearview with a compass/thermo (I don't need gps... If I got a compass I'd never get lost...)

In case you haven't figured it out this is based on my wishlist  of mods to do when I have the time/money.. of course... I doubt I'm gonna stop at 1000$ (I'm gonna be soo broke :nope: )...

Good choices!

I could prolly get you an axleback for less than $200 for your xB, w/ a Magnaflow muffler. If you are local. I don't want to hassle w/ shipping at the moment.

Actually you could get back under budget by doing the interior lighting yourself instead of purchasing Randode's. I'm not knocking his kit at all. It's very easy to install and everyone that has one loves it. I'm just saying you can DIY for $20 and keep everything else on your list.

Don't be a bone head and spend $120 dollars on 20 dollars worth of cold cathode lights. The rest looks good though but i'd get the scion floor mats over generic mats.

Oops yeah kept forgetting to add my location to the profile... :loser:

lol thanks squirrel, but I'm definately not local, as you can see now.

Besides that, the exhaust will probably be the last of the upgrades I do... if I do it at all. Cops around here are pretty ticket friendly too...
so a fancy exhaust sometimes = harassment.

and unfortunately, fancy electronics = better target for thieves.. which reminds me...
I should've added
alarm system $100-$300 (it takes 10% off insurance so it pays for itself, even if the alarms don't really do anything but annoy people around here).

Oh I should note... This is what I would do if I had to do it all over again. I got factory mats and the AEM CAI as dealer options before I found this place and how much cheaper parts can be had for online. The rest of the stuff is planned (except the alarm, its already in). The sad thing about the factory mats is that they cost so much... I feel the need to protect them.. :nails:

The thing about the cathode lights is ... I've been checking stores around here, and they cost about 20$ each. so 20x4 = 80$ not that big of a diff

I have an xA, but the same logic would apply for it as well. I had a slightly different approach. Since the xA is not really meant to be a performance car (and I'm not really worried about driving it like one), I decided to save alot of money by skipping the performance parts. From what I've read, most of that stuff on these little 108 HP engines only gives small gains anyhow. I picked stuff that I knew would just make me like the car more:

Wheels and tires - $700 (minus $200 from selling the stock set) = $500

Aftermarket Keyless Entry - $140

All-weather rubber mats from Wal-Mart - $40

Blue LEDs for cupholders and storage bin - $8

SilverStar headlamps - $35

PIAA Extreme White parking lights - $15

Total investment in mods - $738

*edit* oops, I forgot about my Boomerang Armrest for $129

NEW Total = $867

If it was bone stock, I'd do $850 for wheels and $150
for the CF spoiler on EBay.

Then I'd skip on lunch a couple times over the next couple
of weeks and save up the $20 for some Cold Cathodes.

I say floormats, grounding kit, wheels, and springs are mandatory.

If there's $$ left over, get a rear sway bar, or CAI.

Actually if you do a search on Google you'll find many sites that sell them for $12.99 or less a pair. I bought mine at SVC.com. I have a 12" pair ($12.99) under the dash, one on each side with the converter behind the center console. I have a 6" pair ($6.99) under the front seats stuck to the seat rail so they don't move with the seat with the converter under the center console. That's brings the total to $19.98 plus a few bucks for shipping. I just checked SVC.com and they have superbright 12" blue CCFLs on sale for $5.99 a PAIR. That's less than $15 with shipping and handling if you get a set for the dash and under the front seats. Everything comes with the set except wire taps. You do have to install the switch in the cover plates under the dash if that's where you want it. Randode has found a switch that fits those holes perfectly.

Edit: just noticed that this is if I only had $1k.

Here goes:

Clear Corners: Free
Chromed turn signal bulbs: $6
Partially paint headlight/tail light housings black: $5
Self-applied pinstripes: $6
Interior and exterior lighting (hit the profile link): ~$120
Rubber Floor Mats: $25
Paint Interior parts white: $15
Alpine CDA-9831 with Ipod adapter and installation parts: $400
Black front grill: $50

I'd get a grill or some trim rings with the left over cash.

Bad advice.... The alarm should be your first mod... Then fix it up with the money left over.

My friend bought his rims first, then started asking about what kind of wheel locks and alarm he should buy... Long story short, he no longer has rims. :nope:

First things first, get an alarm with a pager and and a Club/Autolock! Then sart modding.

-THE DONAnother thought, and then I'll leave this alone...with my suggestion, which is only that, the two items I suggested, the CAI and exhaust, are hard to steal, most of the time. I mean, anything can be stolen, but I think those two items are not as high on the theft list as maybe rims, or high end audio...

So, an alarm does not have to be the first thing to get....It can be, if one so wishes.

With a grand to spend, I think I would divvy it up like this-

$625 ebay rims (either nicer ones @ stock size or 16-17" with tires) OR add a sub/amp instead of rims
$150 injen short ram intake
$30 broadway 270mm convex mirror, blue tinted
$20 spray paint for candy-ing taillights, and then smoking them
$20-40 floor mats
$150 ebay muffler, shipping, install (guess)

that comes out right around a grand.... any suggestions?

Rion
02-17-2005, 12:09 AM
I would get some nice, resonably priced 16" alloys. They will weigh less, handle and ride better than gangsta riceboy giant chrome wheels. Then use the money you saved for a thicker rear antisway bar and some performance tires from tire rack.

The car comes WITH an alarm that disables the ignition. You don't need an aftermarket alarm unless or until you plan on putting $2000 worth of stereo system in the car.

Chimmy3
02-17-2005, 02:46 AM
it does? we have starter kill alarms on our cars? or do you mean the scion security?

failed_ethics
02-17-2005, 04:48 PM
Don't trust the stock alarm. Think about it, when you hear an alarm going off do you think it's someone stealing stuff? No, you think, "Dammit, someone needs to turn that thing off."

It doesn't scare thieves as much as you think. Alarm should come first regardless of what you have, it makes you feel so much better.

tires & rims (17")

exhaust
overhead DVD system

other mods that i'll get as i can, out of pocket:
floormats
bB badges (front & back)
blue leds (internal)

mods already completed:

boomerang armrest

I would skip the short ram, unless you want to suck up hotter air than the stock intake pulls in from behind the bumper and have less horsepower for some reason. The whole point of a CAI is to reduce restriction and intake cooler air.

Short rams suck boiling hot air from right above the engine. They are worthless. Try a real Injen CAI or AEM.

Personally I would try and do a drop, tint and some decent maybe used 17's first and just do the small stuff as time goes on.

Usually when I get a new car I am in the same boat as you have pick either rims or a system first, Usually I go with rims and something else like a drop or tint and save another 1k for a system AND AND ALARM, I would suggest getting an alarm before you get a system. I know its $200-300 but its well worth protecting your investment.

I'd put as much of it as I needed down towards a killer stereo (I'm not talking competition, since I want to rock, not roll my car over when subs kick)....

then put the rest on whatever suspension thing will best make my car handle michigan roads.

It's not a scion thing. sure it rides kind of jumpy, but it's a small car with stiff junk. My previa rode bad, my dad's sienna doesn't take it that well... our roads suck. might as well put some money on making them better.
