Question for you guys. I just got rear-ended a few days ago leaving the parking garage at my school. I was sitting waiting to make a left turn and the girl behind me thought I went, so she started to go and ran into my car. She pushed the bottom of the hatch in and busted it up a bit and scuffed up the top of the bumper. I can still open the rear hatch with a lot of effort, but it won't close right. The car thinks the door is still open; the light in the dash stays on. I was just wondering if anyone else has been in a similar accident and what the repair consisted of. I want the hatch to be replaced, the bumper as well preferrably. I have to take the car by the insurance place monday so they can look at it and give me an estimate. Just wondering if I can expect to have the car fixed like I want it to be. Thanks for any info.

Ouch, That sucks, I was rear ended on my driver side. Luckily my hatch was not hit, but my rear quarter panel was crumpled all to hell and mybumper was scratched up. Came out w/ a 1800.00 estimate and now it looks good as new :relief:

I had someone back into me at a parking lot (woman in large truck) The damage was limited to the bumper and quarter panel behind it. Total cost was $1200 but I went to the best place in town since it was her insurance. The paint looks perfect.

welll gaven't been rear ended....yet.... but today i was turning onto a street in the snow (wasnt too bad, could get good traction almost anywhere) and as i come around the corner, the only slick spot in manassas.... so i end up understeering into an imbankment.... CRUNCH!! yeah so it just busted most of the arm supports for the bumper and popped the wheel well liner out, no bigger..... now i think back, i shoulda cranked the wheel hard, and let the Trac Control kick in to pulse the breaks.... might have worked? 20/20 after vision..... BUMMER!!

I got rear ended, and ended up needing only the bumper and 1 of the lower lips. The estimate was for $925.00. I am still fighting her insurance to get the money, but it will be fixed soon!

Thanks for your help, guys. Since it wasn't my fault, I'm not worried about repair cost. I'm hoping to have the whole rear hatch replaced. If there is a local Toyota dealer with a body shop, do you guys recommend I go there? I know a guy at an independent place that does pretty good work, but I figure I should milk the girls insurance for all its worth, especially if I can get the highest-quality repairs. What should I do?

yank the ebrake next time to put yourself in a spin, then slam the gas and counter steer to get yourself going straight again, thats what i always did if i wasnt gonna make the turn, but i just traded my xb for rwd sports car tonight. so now i just gotta slam the gas :)

Seems like most of you guys only had to have work done on your bumper, which is kinda strange since it sits so low compared to other cars.. The girl that hit me was driving a Taurus and my rear bumper didn't take most of the damage, it it scuffed up quite a bit on the very top, but most of the damage is on the bottom part of the hatch below the license plate. Anyone else have to deal with similar damage?

I got an estimate at a Toyota dealer, but I did not go to them because I had heard great things about another shop. The Toyota shops don't rely on quality work and word of mouth to stay alive, they rely on the Toyota badge out front.

Good point, Max. Now I'm not sure where to take my car to get it fixed. The independent shop I took my car to today said it would be about $1000. I guess I'll wait and see what the girls insurance says on Monday.

I got tagged from behind by a 97 Lumina and imprinted his front license plate into my rear bumper, his insurance sent me a $548 check and I'm trying to see if theres a stock Camo rear bumper anywhere local for sale, but nothing so far. Another week & I'll just have a local dealer replace the bumper & paint. Fortunately there was zero damage to the hatch or quarters.. for him! Jackass fell asleep at the wheel... with yo momma!

You guys have me scared ! I'm buying a Hot Lava in Cali that was keyed really bad. Thus the great deal I'm getting on it, plus I want a 5 speed stick. I paint so thats not a problem. But geeze if I get it home and do a nice paint job on it, it better not get nailed ! I've never seen so many wrecked cars as the XB's. My insurance agent said the same thing, they will be a high risk vehicle given all the claims on them.
Anyone done a two tone job on a Lava ? I was thinking of maybe black on the sides, and leaving the front / hood / roof etc Lava.
Thanks !!!

The same thing happened to me. I had 1800 miles on my xB. Insurance will NOT get you a new hatch. I brought it up to the body shop. They said State Farm will not spring for something that is considered minor damage (no problem shutting my hatch). Amazingly, the upper bumper cover and hatch repair was only $680! I was expecting over a thousand.
Good luck.

My body shop guy said it would be at least $1000 to repair to bumper and hatch. He also said there might be hidden damage that he couldn't see without taking the cover and everything off. I do have an issue opening and closing my hatch, as I said earlier. I think the door is all the way closed, but the car thinks the door is still open.
