View Full Version : 6foot tall looking to get a Xb
Brocccoli 02-04-2005, 04:22 AM 6foot tall looking to get an Xb...
Wondering before I go test drive and get dissapointed I figure I'd
check here first...
Okay here's the scoop...
First thing I'd do is open the back door and see if I think I'd hit
my head on it trying to move stuff in and outa the back of it.
I know the height is aprox 5'5'' standard and the door looks like
it opens maybe another 2 inches... perpendicular... (if it opened
at an angle, this would not be as much a concern; bringing up
another question... can the door be modified without too much
trouble to open to a larger angle???)
So question is... for other 6 foot or taller peeps out there... is this
a problem I should consider... and be concerned about? All
experience would be appreciated as for the height reference points.
I'm thinking allready outa the box in perhaps I can get the Xb
raised higher off the ground (longer shock springs??? and shocks??)..
for this reason...(larger tires???)
I see people lowering theirs but, hey what can I say I'm not going
for any particular look(low ridin*)... or driving preference...
*Absolutely nothing against that look and feel...
Just access practicality is all.... yeppp.
Any links to threads that have raising the ride height of the Xb
would also be good, and whether or not its practical... as maybe I'd
be making it more prone to a roll over and what not like suvs and
such.
Thank you in advance for good counsel!
rAndal 02-04-2005, 04:34 AM Huh? I'm 6'5" and I fit fine. I'm not sure if you have a problem with ducking a bit to get in the doors, but lifting the car to a point where you can fit your head in without stooping down is going to 1) look horrid and 2) probably be unsafe. Besides all that, the hatch is more of a concern because of how it sticks out.
What is the big deal anyway?
EVILDAVE 02-04-2005, 04:34 AM Don't worry about it I'm 6'0 tall and I love the thing there's way more head room in this car than anything else your gonna find. We have a member in Nor-Cal that is 6'4" 350lbs and he fits fine (kind strange watching him get out though)
clear_bra_guy 02-04-2005, 04:37 AM im 6'3' and have issues with tight fits in cars. . . im thinking of buying a second xb
MussBus 02-04-2005, 04:39 AM   Wow six feet tall?!?!? Holy sh*t man you must be like a giant in your community!!!! We are still counting by 1/2 inches here to make ourselves feel better about our hieght. LOL sorry you just made it sound like 6 foot was Huge!!!!! Me and 4 of my hockey buddies were in my car for a hour drive to Yakima for some party and no one complained and thats saying somthing since im the shortest and im 6'2 so no worries in that department.

windowtint 02-04-2005, 04:42 AM uhhhhh.... an xB has more vertical headroom than a Chevy Suburban or Ford Excursion ... Unless you're Robert Wadlow, you'll probably do fine.
rollotomassi 02-04-2005, 04:44 AM Hello & welcome!
I'm 6'2" and I haven't had any worthwhile complaints about the open height of the rear deck. I'm usually ducking down to place cargo in, or pull cargo out of the rear.
I'm just cautious when doing so. If you're not a clutz, you'll be fine.
On a side note, I wouldn't walk toward the rear of your xB in pitch dark with the hatch open. Trust me..... it will leave a mark.
As far as raising the suspension of the xB, I know there have been a few threads on the matter. You could try a site search, but they usually aren't very helpful. (Sorry Mods- but it's true.) Perhaps there is an air ride kit that could raise the vehicle higher than factory ride height? I don't think that there is much out there in the form of aftermarket components to RAISE an xB.
I lowered mine, so I'm afraid that I wouldn't be much help in this area.
I love my xB. Tons of room inside for me, w/ head & leg room to spare. I would highly recommend it for people of all heights.
Hope this helps!
SirScion 02-04-2005, 04:50 AM  Oh Man, Broccoli your funny! I'm 6'7", so far the tallest, not bragging, and I have driven a lowered Xb and there is nothing wrong with it at all, it is only a couple more inches, I fit fine, and the seats sit up so high the in and out is not a problem. And who is Robert Wadlow?
Brocccoli 02-04-2005, 05:15 AM  Oh Man, Broccoli your funny! Robert Wadlow's height of 8' 11.1" qualifies him as the
tallest person in history, as recorded in the Guinness Book of World Records... yeppp
Hey thank you everybody.
Yes... most concern was about bapping my noggin on the door while its dark out.
As I don't mind being accident prone... just I don't like having any accidents...
is all.
Just had it in my head eversince I saw the way the back door opened...
I'd much prefer a door much like that of a truck... swing glass and door that
goes down like eh a tail gate... and whalla tail gate party without my tall
friends telling me I gots to change the way the door opens after they stand
up from sittin and bap their noggins.. Well guess I just install a warning
label in it for said occasions.
Yes I figure I'll be if carrying something in and out stoopin down just a
tad... just the standing upright right after... yep... surely one time hitting
my head will get lodged into memory as to how to avoid that.
Yeah the search engine is only so good with as many posts that are
here. But, I can see why its suggested to look before posting as to
keep the numbers down of same questions as much as possible. eh
livin and learnin.
Yeah perhaps I coulda best described this as door phobia... hahaha
then anyone searching could search for that
Yep, thanks for desensitizin me... you all!
As for raising the Xb... well I think it'd look cool all monster ridin! :P
SirScion 02-04-2005, 05:19 AM Thank you for letting me know who he was, and if he were still alive, he would have an Xb too :)
atomoverride 02-04-2005, 02:26 PM I am 6'5" and I drive it just fine. But the back seat is more roomy.
cartier001 02-04-2005, 03:21 PM I am 6' too. I have no problem getting in at all. If this is bothering you so bad. Try Element, it get better headroom but much poor in MPG and it is more expensive.
TheDanger 02-04-2005, 03:31 PM Im 6' 3" and im good to go...my friend who is 6' 8" was good as well with room to go over his head...
squirrel 02-04-2005, 03:35 PM Yeah, well I'm 5' 7" and I love my xb! HA!
I am also 6'0 and have no problem with gettin in and out of the old box. Shoot my boy drove me home one time and I sat in teh back just because I knew I was more comfortable there. :D
h82blgl 02-04-2005, 04:10 PM then that settles it get the freaking than
squarepants 02-04-2005, 04:21 PM i'm 6'1 i think they should of set up the front seat to move back a bit for more leg room i have my seat all the way to the back and i'm still a lil cramp when driving and the back seat has enought room for a football team........... :tap:
big_guy 02-04-2005, 04:21 PM Just a little interesting side note ... Do you know how Robert Wadlow died?
Because they didn't make shoes big enough for someone his size (size 37 was his shoe size), he had all his shoes custom made. He always had a problems with his feet and his sense of feel was very poor in his feet. He had a pair of shoes that rubbed his ankles pretty bad and he developed a blister that develope into an open sore. Well, it got infected and he died as a result of the infection. He was only 22 when he died and was still growing!!
SuperCrunchyAction 02-04-2005, 04:34 PM This is the funniest bit "I'm thinking allready outa the box in perhaps I can get the Xb
raised higher off the ground (longer shock springs??? and shocks??)..
for this reason...(larger tires???) "
Yah why don't you put on a 6" lift kit, that'd do the trick.
Fujiz_xb 02-04-2005, 04:50 PM ^^^ there was one on ebay... it was raised..
IMO xb's look better dropped.
also
there was an offroad xb..YUCK
superjeer 02-04-2005, 05:19 PM I had an astro with the dutch style doors on the bottom with the raising top part and I've almost racked my head a couple times on the xB because I'm used to the clearence. The hatch does open kinda low for tall folks. But, you could always go for the test drive, open the hatch walk right into it. You'll never do THAT again, and now you're clear to buy one ;-) Golly I'm on today.
SCI_TC_GUY 02-04-2005, 05:31 PM HEY.....there's someone as tall as me......i'm 6'7"......HAHA.....WE RULE THE WORLD!!!!!!! ......no?? ok
Lonely_Raven 02-04-2005, 05:47 PM Yeah, it's been said a dozen times already, it's no problem
for me to haul my friends who are 6'4" and 6' 8" though
they would hit their heads on the rear hatch.
It's a good little truck for haulin' stuff! Go check it out!
BigBaby 02-04-2005, 06:43 PM i'm 6feet and get in and out of mine easy, front and back seats. i even have a tendency to park flush to walls on the driver side and just get out on the passenger side, that's how roomy it is.
join the family, you'll luv it, trust me.
George 02-04-2005, 07:09 PM 6'2" and no problem. I duck a bit under the rear hatch, but don't really notice it. The only car I have where I don't duck under the rear hatch is a VW bus!
Im 6' tall and I only have one problem. No leg room. I feel that the driver seat should slide back another 1.5" to 2" further. I do have a long inseam and a short torso for being 6' tho.
SirScion 02-04-2005, 07:44 PM I have plenty of room when driving and like I said I am 6'7", what are you used to driving? A semi?
CBSIMONSEZ 02-05-2005, 02:25 PM I have plenty of room when driving and like I said I am 6'7", what are you used to driving? A semi?
Funny someone should mention this. I drive a rig 5 days a week. A 2003 KW Day Cab. I can say that my box has more room in it then my rig. There is about the same amount of head room with the air ride seat in my rig ( now that would be nice in a box ) almost all the way down. If the seat is raised all the way up, then i have less head room. And leg room, forget it. I have arthritis in my left knee. If i drive my rig for more then a couple of hours, it starts to bother me. i dont have this problem in my box. I can drive for days an no stiffness. Go figure.
As far as the rear hatch. Leave it open once and hit your head on the corner once, and thats all it will take. I have lowering springs which softened the ride, but also dropped it about an inch and a half. I was in the rear with the hatch open more then ten times a day. Hit my head once, and never did it again.
<=== 6'2" BTW.
Tucker2930 02-05-2005, 03:54 PM 6' 6" at 240 lbs. no problem
rollotomassi 02-05-2005, 08:05 PM Just a little interesting side note ... Do you know how Robert Wadlow died?

Interesting. What era did he live in? Late 1800s, early 1900s right?
Notacop 02-06-2005, 01:17 AM I am 6'3 320 lbs. I have only a 32" inseam so torso length is an issue. Most cars do not have enough headroom for me. Any car with a sunroof is pretty much instantly off my list. I was amazed with the headroom in the xB and it is the main selling point for me. Knee space is a little tight, but managable. If I have a drink in the cupholder or the little door for the cargo thing open my knee gets tired because I can't angle my knee off to the side enough but other than that it is no problem.
As far as hitting your head on the hatch door, I think it is actually low enough that you will notice it and not hit your head on it. Some cars that are close (ie most minivans) you don't notice it until you hit your head on it. The xB hatch is at about eye level so you will see it before you bust your head on it.
SirScion 03-18-2005, 08:45 AM So, what happened did you get one?
Nozerider 03-18-2005, 01:50 PM This question seems to be asked alot.
Big_Boy_Phil 03-18-2005, 06:42 PM 6'4" here.
I have plenty of head room, but i wish the leg room was a bit more. I have been trying to see about getting the seat mounted a few inches back to give just a bit more leg room. Also, maybe angle the the seat back a bit too so my legs can have some support.
I asked a few dealers about it, and they said that they cannot do it, but they have had customers come back to the dealer to show them that the stock seats can be repositioned. I guess it just takes finding the right shop to do it. I don't know what kind of shop i should be looking for, autobody? Custom shop? interior shop? I was thinking of going to West Coast Customs and having them pimp my seats, but they are pricey (from what I have heard anyway)
kacosta 03-18-2005, 07:33 PM 6'1 230 lbs have to duck under the hatch no big love this car i used to get wicked leg cramps on long trips with my 02 camry then i got the box. on long trips no crampy leg.. yea!!
HammerHead 03-18-2005, 07:34 PM Some cars that are close (ie most minivans) you don't notice it until you hit your head on it.
Yea, I noticed mine up close and have the knot to prove it.
scottwood2 03-18-2005, 07:37 PM Im 6' 1". I just went on a trip and rented a full size Chevy Impala. Could not wait to get back in the xB. It was good once you got inside but geting in and out was a real pain. The windshield is real close to you head. The xB felt HUGE when I ciimbed back in.
Back seat is great as well. Maybe even more room than the front.
rallyxb 03-21-2005, 02:46 AM 6'2" and no problem. I duck a bit under the rear hatch, but don't really notice it. The only car I have where I don't duck under the rear hatch is a VW bus!
Agreed.
I'm 6'3" and have to duck a little for the hatch but it's not a big deal. I even had to duck for the hard-top hatch on my old CJ-7 Jeep that had really big tires and a 2" lift kit kit!
The Box is surely not lacking for driver and passenger comfort.
kaos672 03-21-2005, 05:02 PM I'm six feet tall and 295lbs. I have an xB and I fitl in it fine. You will have no problems. This past weekend my bother and I went to the GM test drive that was held at Turner Field in Atlanta. I noticed that the xB blows alot of the GM vehicals away as far as leg and head room. Oh.. and also the price. I was shocked that suv's such as the tahoe and the escalade lacked the head room and leg room that I have in my xB. I was totally shocked by the Hummer truck. No room at all!! I was smiling and and laughing all day long. Oh.. I will say this. The GTO is not to be messed with. Man that thing is a beast. I mean a real beast so was the Vette. 2nd gear and pushing 60-70mph with no problem or red lining. WHEW!!! I was impressed by those 2 vehicals.
GOD Bless
:)
