View Full Version : Question about Spray painting my rims ?
Simez2003 02-04-2005, 02:36 PM I like the stock style of the rims, but i wanted to make them black. I know I should powder coat them, but I'm kinda cheap since im putting all my $ in a turbo. Would black heat resistant barbeque paint work ? Would this give me pretty decent durability ?
iridium_red 02-04-2005, 02:52 PM Yea some help on this please. I want to do the same thing and was wondering how to do it. Thanks. :)
Monarch 02-04-2005, 02:59 PM I would get them powder coated. Spraypaint doesnt last and will make you and your car look ridiculus

oni424 02-04-2005, 03:25 PM spray painting your rims is ricey.
IndigoDreams 02-04-2005, 03:32 PM if you want to spray them go to walmart or any place that sells spraypaint. Look for the 3M purple SKUFF pads and buy a packo or two. Clean everything off the rims then scuff them up until the rims are nolonger shinny at all. I mean like completely DULL. once uve done that wash them off agian let dry completely then hit them up with primer. any primer will do. after a few coats of primer then hit them up with the dupla-color Gunmetal Rim paint or Black whatever you perfer. If you want them shinny then get the RIM Clear and hit them up with that. My friend and I did his wheels and used a can of paint on each wheel and a can of clear on each as well to make it REALLY thick and shinny. I was told to prep the wheels this way by a body shop. I had them Professionaly spray my old integra wheels but they had me prep them first. This method works best and holds up great. My integra wheels still looks super shinny and its been 3 yeas and my friends wheels which were done with the rattle cans are still as red as the day we painted them. You will encounter some chipping and such wehre the lug nuts go from u taking the wheels on and off but that is common with ANY wheel if youd ont take ur time. Hope that helps you out.
sa_gi_scion 02-04-2005, 03:37 PM just get them powder coated, its only like 50-150 per wheel, its not going to put a huge hole in turbo savings.

Glad to see you're rolling in it...$200-$600 is a big "hole" for many folks on this forum.
maximus96 02-04-2005, 07:11 PM get some 'aircraft stripper' from kragen or autozone, it'll take the shiny coating off the rims. then proceed to spray paint with wheel paint.
PandaIst 02-04-2005, 07:31 PM ehhh better to powdercoat than spray paint it yourself. But if funds are that low, duplicolor makes wheel paint..comes in 4 colors to choose from. There are DIY steps on their website how to apply it properly.

well think about it this way spent 50 bucks and spray paint them and they look like crap and you have to deal with chipping, over spraying, and dripping. not to mention if that happens you have to keep painting them. or for 500 get them powder coated and never worry about them again. to me the 500 seems worth it!
HawkINX4 02-04-2005, 09:20 PM forget the duplicolor spray paint!!!!
go to autozone and get Engine ENamel.. they have 2 blacks.. low gloss black and high gloss black.. its heat resistent and stays on, spray painting isnt ricey.. its just how some people do it for less money..

JUMBO 02-04-2005, 09:36 PM I've got a guy here who powdercoats for $25 a rim. And he has about 120 colors to choose from. Plus, the last time I used him, he turned them around in a day for me. It was great. Did it for a customer.

Souljah347 02-04-2005, 09:55 PM spray painting is so ghetto, get them powder coated, it's not really that expensive, and it looks 100 times better.
friends don't let friends rice up their car

I hate to break it to you, but doing things to your car the cheap way is bascially the DEFINITION of ricey. Save up, do it right. Anything worth doing is worth doing well. The younger members of this board need to stop looking for instant gratification. You should save up and do it right. If it puts a hole in your turbo savings, consider your priorities and decide which to save up for first.
franktherank 02-05-2005, 09:35 PM just save up and buy aftermarket rims, thats what im savin up for
dgHotLava 02-05-2005, 09:40 PM this is more suited in tread and butter....

Learn to like your wheels how they are. Then when you can afford to do it right, buy new ones or go powdycoating. Do not spray paint, you will hate yourself later, and hate leads to smoking. All those products that claim to be special wheel paints are just marketing ploys, they may be tougher than regular paint, but not by much.
Jammet 02-05-2005, 11:54 PM I would get them powder coated. Spraypaint doesnt last and will make you and your car look ridiculus
might as well cut your springs to lower your car.
squarepants 02-06-2005, 12:42 AM painting your rims is not a bad idea, but you got a choice do it the right way it's going to cost you or do it the easy way and look silly as the paint start flaking off, just bite the bullet and wait till you have the money and get some nice wheels of your choice..

we are all considered rice bro.. who cares.. we drive a four cylinder car with front wheel drive... everyone does something ricey.. and if you paint your rims right, its not. you cant even tell my rims were painted.. i have fooled sooo many people with my rims, i will take a picture of my rims up close and see if you can spot the bad in them, oh and if you know what you are doing.. they wont flake.
