I'm hoping this civic your racing is a DX, or at least a LX. First of all, I own a xB btw, I dont think the scion was made to race. Add that, you have an automatic tranny. Anyway, good luck w/ur tranny, and I guess good advice for those w/auto. :|

The waranty covers manufacturer defects only... racing the car and braking the tranny is NOT a manufacturer's defect... it is user induced damage

A lot of manufacturers void your warranty if you participate in any racing, whether it's drag, autocross, or on the track.

If you are the kind of driver that is gonna push the auto tranny hard, you might consider the auto trans cooler by Blitz. It's around $380.

the point i was getting is at some point in an vehicle life there is a good chance that a driver or owner might push there car to it's limit it don't have to be a drag race,i know that the xb was not built for that but at the same time if i push it to 110 mph and the engine blow up no matter what it's still covered under warranty, i don't think toyota would give a car and say please don't pass 55 mph or else it's you void the warranty.....hmm maybe i should take this supercharger and intake back for credit..

I remeber a thread a few (5-8) months back where people with Man trannies were having concerns. More or less indicated in their opinion, that the xb shouldn't have a man tranny, and that in JPN xb's are generally only auto's. Guess a few of them had tranny failures within a few thousand miles. I haven't heard any negative feedback regarding the auto before...regardless, congrats on getting a new tranny for free.

I'd assume most of the bBs are caught in bumper to bumper traffic anyway, herego the reason for the auto..? :P

Well, unless he was doing neutral drops or towing a big trailer, nothing you do to an automatic transmission can be considered abuse. It's automatic, so it shouldn't be able to overstress itself.

i think some people in here don't understand my point,we all know that the xb is not built for speed but if you do speed and break anything in the process you covered no matter what speeding it's not abuse in any form or matter,i'm not the type of person that drag race and yes i do think drag racing is dumb as hell i seen too many lives lost by teens drag racing,it was just a one time thing on a back road with no traffic just me and my big mouth friend who talks crap about my xb i guess i just had to show him that my car is not that slow as it looks..anyway speding does not void your warranty..

Well, related to multiple posts, I'll reply my 2 cents.
I just bought an manual xB and got it yesterday (hooray!). Ive always driven automatics but I learned how to maneuver a standard transmission recently and now I'm putting my skills to the test. I'm pretty good, almost like a pro after just a day. Anyway I was on a very steep hill practicing starting into 1st with my mom this morning and after about 5 minutes of back and forth and somewhat abusing the engine it started to smell pretty bad of plastic or rubber or soemthing coming from the air vents. I wonder if I was actually messing up the engine? Or is it just because its new (only 200 miles) and i was running it hard?
Also so far I'm very glad I got a manual and I think its so much morefun to drive. But I dont do any extensive commutes or long highway driving, just zipping around the city.

704 - that smell could be the freshness factor, air filter, etc. I still get that from time to time and I've got 5k miles.
Dass - the MT xB is mad fun.. if you're missing manual, it's good.. plus, if you shift well, you'll get pretty good acceleration (even for 108 hp).
Finally, squarepants.. hate to tell ya, but UnFocused before had a point. Did you redline it at first? Smoke the tires? Go past something like 110 MPH? Maybe your tranny's not shot completely, but the mechanics probably would have to replace it down the road now anyway.

704...thats one way to kill a clutch.....
that smell was your clutch buring up and the flywheel glazing over due to too much heat....
you need to break in a clutch easy for the first 500 miles so this won't happen...i predict a new clutch in the future...

never redline my box and never burn tires i like my box will never do such a thing,i guess the only thing i did wrong was to floor it i did get up to about 90 mph think that's kinda weird for a tranny to fail at that speed,i did had enough life left to ride to the dealership....

Hmm well that sucks if you guys are right... I feel pretty bad if I messed up my car the first day I had it, but I live in a really hilly city and I had to learn how to move that thing. Would it be covered under waranty or is it considered "driver inflicted" abuse..? What happens when it fails? thanks...

if you blow it up, deny having abused it...
the dealer might still give you crap about it.
if you feel like you must learn the clutch some more, do one luanch, drive around for two or three mins and try again. this will give the heat some time to cool off.

Remember to keep it like a pendulum.. one foot up while the other down.
If you have burnt the clutch sometimes, just think of this.. you need to find the point where the clutch engages. Push it in and slowly lift til you can hear it ready to stall.
Living in a hilly place can be a pain.. but just try to fully stop and roll back a bit while traffic behind you slows down.
Sometimes they'll not inch up.. but sometimes they'll get on yer bumper.

The parking brake lever is handy to the right hand to hold a vehicle on a grade and relieve the requirement to use the foot brake. That frees both feet to operate the clutch and fuel pedals.

My xB's mannual transmission died after about 15-16k miles on it. The dealer said the bearings went bad, so rather than just replacing those, they replaced the whole thing. It took them like 2 1/2 weeks to do it because they told me the transmission was on back order. I've put about 10K miles on the new one and I haven't had any problems with it.

Driving your car fast does not void a warranty!.....based on that logic if floored his car to merge in traffic it voids his warranty....SLOW DOWN YOU'LL VOID YOUR WARRANTY   :blah: .....that could leed to all kinds of legal issues if it were so....abusive thngs like nuetral drops well that should void it
To insure longer life of a tranny you go with a trans coolere and a true synthetic trans fluid like Amsoil, Redline, Royal Purple, Mobil !

I am glad that I got the MT..... I was cruising along about 80 in fifth when a civic decided to pass me..........as he went by he looked over and smiled.........as soon as he got just past me I dropped into 4th and left him sitting there........I guess my performance goodies helped some, but that was with heavy 18" wheels. Clutch might be abused. Is a clutch covered on warranty ?

Generally, a clutch is seen as a wear item. Unless it is faulty by design or manufacture, they probably won't cover it. That's just part of the cost of owning a manual...
And shouldn't the title of this thread be "MY xB may have a weak tranny" Just because a few out of a few thousand have a problem doesn't exactly raise a big red flag to me. Especially since I drive mine that way every day...

I had an AT XB for a year and 18K miles with no issues. Very smooth.
My mom had an AT drop out of her rental Echo though. I don't know the mileage, age, or how it was driven (rental gives me a clue though), but it did make me raise an eyebrow since the engine tranny was the same as my XB. I was hoping if it did happen, it would happen within the 3 yr warranty.
